This page links all 246 of my lists of developer, data and IT tools, from code editors, APIs and hosting to BI tools, password managers and security software. Pick the job and open that one list.

How I build these lists

Every list I've built since mid-October 2026 follows the same method. I read each tool on its own website, note whether that site names a free plan, a trial only or neither, and put the tools in no particular order with no winner. The tools are named, never linked.

Across the 1,925 different tools I read for the 235 lists on this page where I recorded each tool's free plan, 895 name a free plan or a free version on their own site, 330 offer a trial only, and 700 say neither on the pages I read. That's fewer than half with a free plan, so the column is worth a look before you shortlist anything.

My advice: open the list closest to the job you need done, shortlist three tools whose site names a free plan or trial, and try each one on a single real task before you pay for anything.

Security, passwords, VPNs and compliance (46 lists)

Data, BI and analytics tools (22 lists)

Coding, testing, APIs and hosting (78 lists)

Mac, Windows, Android and browser utilities (23 lists)

Alternatives to popular developer, data and IT tools (77 lists)

Do you make one of the developer, data and IT tools on these lists, or one that belongs on them? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place.

Frequently asked questions

Are these lists for developers or for small business owners?

Both. The coding and API lists are written for developers; the security, password and backup lists are written so a small business owner can follow them.

Which list covers no-code app builders?

The coding, testing, APIs and hosting group includes the no-code and AI app builder lists.

How is the free plan column filled in?

From each tool's own website. Open source tools count as Yes when the project says it's free to use.

Is there a top pick on each list?

No. Lists built since mid-October 2026 are in no particular order with no winner named.

Can a developer tool be considered for a list?

Yes, through the feature your tool page linked here.
