The best SOX compliance software helps finance, internal audit and IT teams document internal controls over financial reporting, test them, collect evidence and show the results to auditors. Some tools are broad GRC platforms, others focus on ERP access and controls monitoring, and a few tie SOX work to financial reporting itself. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Sarbanes-Oxley work has a reputation, and it isn't a good one. It's spreadsheets: a controls matrix with hundreds of rows, evidence scattered across shared drives and a frantic month before the auditors arrive.
SOX compliance software is built to calm that down. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If your finance team works with outside help, my guide to choosing an outsourced accounting firm covers that side.
SOX compliance tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Which tool fits which SOX programme
- SOX tied to financial reporting and filings: Workiva.
- Broad GRC with internal audit: Optro, Diligent or Onspring.

What the PCAOB says about smaller companies
The PCAOB's auditing standard AS 2201 covers the audit of internal control over financial reporting. It says the size and complexity of a company, its business processes and business units may affect the risks of misstatement and the controls needed to address them, and that scaling is most effective as a natural extension of the risk-based approach.
In plain terms, a smaller company doesn't need a giant controls library copied from a much bigger one. It needs the right controls for its own risks, documented and tested well. Software should make that easier, not add rows for the sake of it.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Controls, evidence, access
Most SOX tools cover three jobs, and they're worth separating. First, the controls library: what each control is, who owns it and how often it runs.
Second, testing and evidence: requests to control owners, uploads, reviewer sign-off and a trail the auditor can follow.
Third, access. Many SOX findings come from who can do what inside the finance system, and that's often where you'll find the surprises, so tools that review ERP access and spot conflicting permissions save a lot of manual work. Work out which of the three hurts most before you shortlist.
Finance teams are increasingly asked for sustainability data too, and this guide to ESG reporting software compares tools that collect it.
Questions to ask a SOX software vendor
- Can control owners upload evidence without training?
- Will your external auditor be able to review inside the tool?
- Does it connect to your ERP for access reviews?
- Can one test cover several frameworks?
- How are deficiencies tracked to closure?
- What does a first-year rollout look like?
Controls need written policies behind them, and our round-up of policy management tools compares tools that keep them current.
Signs your SOX programme needs a tool
- Evidence lives in email. Centralise requests and uploads.
- Controls keep multiplying. Rationalise before you test.
- Access reviews are manual. Connect to the ERP.
- Auditors ask the same questions twice. Give them a portal.

My plain advice on SOX compliance software
Clean up the controls before you buy anything. You'll thank yourself later. Moving a bloated spreadsheet into new software just gives you a bloated database. Cut duplicate and low-value controls first, then pick the tool that makes the remaining ones easy to test.
If your company's in a regulated sector such as banking, check how the tool handles your other obligations too, because you won't want two separate systems. My piece on regulatory compliance in banking gives a sense of how those overlap.
Frequently asked questions
What is SOX compliance software?
It's software that helps companies document, test and evidence their internal controls over financial reporting under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and share the results with auditors.
Who needs SOX compliance software?
US public companies, companies preparing for an IPO, and subsidiaries of listed groups usually need SOX controls, and software makes them far easier to manage.
Can small companies scale down SOX work?
The PCAOB's AS 2201 says scaling is most effective as a natural extension of the risk-based approach, so smaller companies should match controls to their own risks.
Is SOX software the same as GRC software?
Many GRC platforms include SOX features. Dedicated SOX tools focus on financial controls, while GRC tools also cover risk, policy and other frameworks.
Why do access reviews matter for SOX?
Many control issues come from who can create, approve or change entries in the finance system, so regular access reviews are a common SOX control.
How long does a SOX software rollout take?
It depends on your control count and systems. Starting with a cleaned-up controls library makes any rollout faster.
