The best data lineage tools map where your data comes from, how it changes along the way and which reports, dashboards or models depend on it. That lets you fix bad numbers at the source and see what will break before you change a table. Options range from free open source projects to enterprise platforms built for regulated firms. Eleven follow in no particular order.
Someone always asks where a number in a dashboard came from. Without lineage, the honest answer is a long afternoon of digging through SQL and pipelines until you find the join that went wrong.
The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. My piece on common data integration challenges explains why lineage gets messy so quickly.
Data lineage tools compared
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free edition or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Eleven data lineage tools worth a look
Cloudera Data Lineage
Best for: Organisations already on Cloudera's data platform who want lineage inside their unified data fabric.
Dataedo
Best for: Teams who want to visualise and document data from source to destination alongside a catalog, with a 14-day trial.
Datafold
Best for: Engineers planning migrations who want lineage, business logic and usage in one knowledge graph to support the work.
DataHub
Best for: Data teams who want discovery, governance, observability and lineage on a platform with a large open source community.
Euno
Best for: Analytics teams on dbt and Looker who want a live graph that rebuilds lineage, meaning and ownership automatically.
Gudu SQLFlow
Best for: Engineers who want lineage drawn straight from SQL queries and stored procedures across dozens of databases, with a free tier.
IBM Manta
Best for: Large enterprises who want automated lineage across systems from source to consumption, as part of IBM's data intelligence tools.
Marquez
Best for: Platform teams who want an open source service that consumes, stores and visualises OpenLineage metadata across the organisation.
Select Star
Best for: Governance-minded teams who want a platform with catalog, lineage and entity-relationship diagrams, now part of Snowflake.
Solidatus
Best for: Regulated enterprises who need AI-powered lineage that supports regulatory compliance, change management and data governance.
Spline
Best for: Teams running Apache Spark who want free, open source tracking of data lineage and pipeline structure.
Where to start
- Free and open source: Marquez, Spline or DataHub.
- Lineage straight from SQL code: Gudu SQLFlow.
- Catalog and lineage together: Dataedo or Select Star.
- dbt and Looker estates: Euno.
- Migrations and engineering work: Datafold.
- Banks and regulated firms: Solidatus.
- Large enterprise platforms: IBM Manta or Cloudera Data Lineage.
Why banks cared about lineage first
The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision published its principles for effective risk data aggregation and risk reporting, often called BCBS 239, in 2013. It says the financial crisis that began in 2007 revealed that many banks, including global systemically important banks, were unable to aggregate risk exposures and identify concentrations fully.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So lineage became a regulatory expectation in banking long before it was a buzzword. Even if you're not a bank, the lesson holds: if you can't trace a number, you can't fully trust it.
Table-level or column-level lineage?
Table-level lineage shows which tables feed which. It's quicker to set up and fine for spotting broad dependencies before a migration.
Column-level lineage tracks individual fields through every transformation. It's what you need to debug a wrong number or prove where personal data flows, but it takes more parsing of SQL and pipeline code.
For day-to-day work inside the databases themselves, our list of database management tools covers the main clients.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Which tools in our stack does it read lineage from?
- Do we need table-level or column-level lineage?
- Can it parse our SQL dialects and stored procedures?
- Does it show impact before we change a table?
- Can business users understand the diagrams?
- Do we need open source or a supported platform?
Once you can see where sensitive fields travel, this guide to data masking tools compares tools that hide them in test data.
Signs you need data lineage
- Dashboards disagree. Trace both numbers back.
- Changes break reports. Check impact first.
- Audits take weeks. Show data flows on demand.
- Nobody owns key tables. Map owners with lineage.
Do you make data lineage, catalog or governance tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on data lineage tools
Start with the reports people argue about. Map the lineage behind your three most important dashboards first, because that's where trust is lost and where the time saved shows up fastest.
Pick a tool that reads your stack automatically, since hand-drawn lineage goes stale within weeks. If you report in Power BI, my guide to Power BI data governance covers the reporting end of the chain.
Frequently asked questions
What is data lineage?
It's a map of where data comes from, how it's transformed and where it ends up, from source systems to reports and models.
Why does data lineage matter?
It helps you trace wrong numbers to their source, see what breaks before a change and show regulators how data flows.
Are there free data lineage tools?
Yes. Several open source projects track lineage, and some commercial tools offer free tiers.
What is OpenLineage?
It's an open framework for collecting lineage metadata consistently across tools, which open source services can store and visualise.
What is BCBS 239?
It's the Basel Committee's set of principles for risk data aggregation and reporting at banks, published in 2013.
Is lineage the same as a data catalog?
No. A catalog helps people find and understand data. Lineage shows how data moves and changes, though many tools offer both.
