Free Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator (2026 Benchmarks)

Your Instagram engagement rate is your average likes plus comments per post, divided by your follower count, multiplied by 100. Type your numbers into the calculator below and you get the percentage straight away, plus a verdict on where it sits against 2026 benchmarks. Nothing is uploaded and there is no login. It is simple maths, done in your browser.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter your follower count from your profile.
  2. Enter your average likes and average comments per post. If you only know totals across a few posts, enter the totals and set the number of posts and the calculator averages them for you.
  3. Optionally add average saves and shares if you have Insights. They give you a second, fuller rate.
  4. Optionally add average reach per post to see your rate by reach, which is what many brands now ask for.
  5. Press the button. Copy the result if you need to paste it into a media kit or a message.

What counts as a good engagement rate in 2026

The honest answer is that it depends on your size. Small accounts get a bigger share of their followers seeing and reacting to each post, so an account with 3,000 followers at 5% is normal, while a brand with 500,000 followers at 1.5% is doing well. As a rough guide, under 1% is low, 1% to 3% is average, 3% to 6% is good and anything above 6% is excellent. Reels and carousels tend to pull higher rates than single images because they earn more saves and shares, and Instagram shows them to more people who do not follow you.

If you are trying to lift the number rather than just measure it, the format you post in matters more than most people think. Reels are still the fastest route to reach and reactions, and there is a full breakdown of what moves the needle in how to get more views on Instagram Reels. Posting cadence matters too, and if you are wondering whether more Stories help or hurt, read how many Instagram Stories you should post a day.

Why the rate can look worse than your content deserves

A low engagement rate is often a follower problem, not a content problem. Inactive accounts, bought followers from years ago and people who followed you for a giveaway all sit in your denominator and never react. Before you rewrite your content plan, check who is following you. You can see who does not follow you back with the free Instagram unfollowers checker, which reads your official export in your browser without a login, and if you want the manual method there is a walkthrough on how to compare your Instagram followers and following.

The other trap is averaging the wrong posts. Take your last 10 to 12 feed posts, not your best three, and skip anything you boosted with ads. Brands that check your numbers will look at recent, unpaid posts, so that is the figure worth knowing.

Frequently asked questions

How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?

Add your average likes and comments per post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. Some brands also add saves and shares, and some divide by reach instead of followers. This calculator gives you all three so you can quote whichever one is asked for.

Should I use followers or reach as the denominator?

Followers is the traditional measure and the one most benchmark lists use. Reach is fairer for accounts with a lot of inactive followers and is what many brand deals now request. Report both when you can and say which is which.

Does the calculator connect to my Instagram account?

No. You type the numbers in yourself and the calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere and no login is needed.

Why is my engagement rate lower than my friend’s smaller account?

Smaller accounts almost always show a higher percentage because a bigger share of their followers see each post. Compare yourself with accounts of a similar size in the same niche, not with the raw percentage of a much smaller one.

How many posts should I average?

Ten to twelve recent feed posts is enough to smooth out one viral or one flat post. Leave out anything you paid to promote.
