The best cron job schedulers run your tasks on a timetable, such as calling a URL every five minutes or sending a report every Monday, without you keeping a server running for it. Some are simple online cron services, while others monitor the jobs you already have or run scheduled functions with retries built in. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Cron is one of the oldest tools in computing, and it still runs a huge share of background work. The trouble starts when a server's moved, a job fails silently, or nobody remembers which machine was running the nightly import.
The eleven cron job schedulers below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the provider's own website or documentation, read this week. If you're scheduling business tasks rather than code, my guide to AI workflow automation for small businesses may suit you better.
Cron job schedulers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free allowance or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.
| Tool | Type | Good for | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| cron-job.org | Free online cron service | Free scheduled URL calls | Yes |
| Cronhooks | Webhook scheduling service | One-time and recurring webhooks | Not stated |
| Cronitor | Cron job and website monitoring | Alerts when a scheduled job fails | Not stated |
| Crontap | Online cron jobs for any URL | Cron jobs plus uptime checks | Yes |
| EasyCron | Online cron service | Replacing server crontab with a web panel | Not stated |
| FastCron | Cron job service | Reliable jobs with failure alerts | Trial only |
| Google Cloud Scheduler | Managed cron job scheduler | Jobs that trigger Google Cloud services | Not stated |
| Healthchecks.io | Cron job monitoring | Free monitoring of existing jobs | Yes |
| Inngest | Durable execution for workflows | Scheduled functions with retries built in | Yes |
| Trigger.dev | Open source platform for background jobs and agents | Scheduled tasks in TypeScript apps | Yes |
| Vercel Cron Jobs | Scheduled functions for hosted projects | Apps already hosted on Vercel | Not stated |
Eleven cron services and job platforms
cron-job.org
Best for: Site owners who want free cron jobs that call a URL on a schedule, from every minute to once a year.
Cronhooks
Best for: Developers who want to schedule webhooks to fire once or on a recurring timetable, without running their own scheduler.
Cronitor
Best for: Teams who already have cron jobs and want monitoring and alerts on them, alongside website and application monitoring.
Crontap
Best for: Small teams who want online cron jobs for any URL with uptime and heartbeat checks, starting on a free tier.
EasyCron
Best for: Site owners who want an online cron service with standard cron expressions instead of editing crontab on a server.
FastCron
Best for: Teams who want a reliable cron job service that logs runs and notifies them of failures, with a 14-day free trial.
Google Cloud Scheduler
Best for: Google Cloud users who want a managed scheduler to trigger their services and functions on a cron timetable.
Healthchecks.io
Best for: Developers who want existing cron jobs watched, with alerts when a ping does not arrive and 20 jobs monitored free.
Inngest
Best for: Product engineers who want scheduled functions and workflows with retries and durable steps, from an open source project.
Trigger.dev
Best for: TypeScript developers who want scheduled tasks and long-running jobs on an open source platform they can also self-host.
Vercel Cron Jobs
Best for: Apps already hosted on Vercel that want scheduled calls to their own functions configured in the project itself.
Jobs that go beyond a timer, like routing leads or drafting replies, are where business automation consultants can help.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Which cron scheduler to start with
- Free scheduled URL calls: cron-job.org or Crontap.
- A web panel instead of crontab: EasyCron or FastCron.
- Scheduling webhooks: Cronhooks.
- Watching jobs you already run: Cronitor or Healthchecks.io.
- Scheduled functions with retries: Inngest or Trigger.dev.
- Apps on a cloud platform: Vercel Cron Jobs or Google Cloud Scheduler.
Check which timezone your jobs run in
Vercel's cron jobs documentation states plainly that the timezone is always UTC. Render's cron documentation says the same for its schedules.
So a job set for 9am runs at 9am UTC, which isn't 9am in London for half the year, or in New York or Sydney at all. Write the timezone next to every schedule, and test the first run before you trust it.
Running jobs versus monitoring jobs
A cron service runs the job for you. It calls your URL or function on schedule, which is ideal when you don't want a server sitting there just to keep time.
A cron monitor watches jobs you already run. Each job pings the monitor when it finishes, and you get an alert when a ping doesn't arrive, which catches the silent failures plain cron never reports.
Questions to ask a cron service
- Which timezone do schedules use?
- What happens if my endpoint is down when a job fires?
- Are retries and timeouts configurable?
- Will I be alerted when a job fails or runs late?
- Can I see a history of every run?
- What's the shortest interval it supports?
Signs your scheduled jobs need attention
- A job failed and nobody noticed. Add monitoring.
- Jobs run on one old server. Move them somewhere visible.
- Times drift with the clocks changing. Check the timezone.
- Nobody knows what runs overnight. List every schedule.
Do you make a cron or job scheduling tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing a cron job scheduler
Monitor before you migrate. Add a simple check-in to the jobs you already have, and you'll quickly learn which ones fail, run late or don't run at all. That list tells you what's worth moving first.
Keep schedules in code or config where you can see them, not buried in a server nobody logs into. And if you're automating more of the business, my automation tips for small businesses are a quick place to start.
Frequently asked questions
What is a cron job scheduler?
A cron job scheduler runs tasks automatically on a timetable, using cron expressions such as every five minutes or every Monday at 9am.
Is there a free online cron service?
Yes. Some services in this list offer free cron jobs or a free tier, as of Oct 2026.
What timezone do cron jobs use?
It depends on the service. Vercel's documentation says its cron jobs always use UTC.
How do I know if a cron job failed?
Use a cron monitor: each job pings it when it finishes, and you're alerted if a ping doesn't arrive.
Do I need a server to run cron jobs?
No. Online cron services and cloud schedulers run jobs for you without a server of your own.
What's the difference between cron and a job queue?
Cron starts tasks at set times, while a job queue processes tasks as they're added, often with retries.
