Best API Management Platforms: 11 Gateways Compared

The best API management platforms put a gateway in front of your APIs to handle authentication, traffic limits and monitoring, and add tools to publish and govern them: teams on one cloud often start with that provider's own service, while others prefer an independent or open source gateway. Eleven platforms follow in no particular order.

The moment you share data with a partner, connect a mobile app or let an AI agent call your systems, you're running APIs. One or two can be looked after by hand. Ten or twenty, used by people you've never met, need a front door with rules.

That front door is what API management does. The eleven platforms below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from free open source gateways to the big cloud services, and every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If the bigger headache is joining systems together, my piece on data integration challenges is worth a look first.

API management platforms side by side

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free edition or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it or book a demo.

Eleven API management platforms to consider

Amazon API Gateway

Best for: Teams already building on Amazon Web Services that want to create, publish and secure APIs without running their own gateway.

Apache APISIX

Best for: Engineering teams that want a free, open source API gateway from the Apache Software Foundation that they run themselves.

Apigee

Best for: Large organisations with big API programmes that want design, security and analytics tools on Google Cloud, with a sandbox to explore first.

Azure API Management

Best for: Organisations built on Microsoft Azure that want to publish, secure and monitor their APIs from the cloud they already use.

Gravitee

Best for: Platform teams that want one place to secure and control APIs, event streams and AI agents.

Kong Gateway

Best for: Platform engineering teams that want a widely used API gateway that also handles connectivity for AI traffic.

KrakenD

Best for: Developers who want a high-performance, open source API gateway with a free Community Edition they configure and run themselves.

MuleSoft Anypoint API Manager

Best for: Enterprises already integrating many systems with MuleSoft that want every API and microservice managed from one place.

Tyk

Best for: Teams that want API management as a fully managed cloud service or as a hybrid set-up with local gateways across regions.

WSO2 API Platform

Best for: Organisations that want APIs, LLMs and AI agents managed as SaaS, self-hosted or hybrid while keeping control of where their data lives.

Zuplo

Best for: Developer-led teams that want one programmable gateway for their APIs, LLM calls and MCP servers that goes live in minutes.

What an API gateway does for you

A gateway sits between the people or programs calling your API and the services behind it. It checks who's calling, enforces limits so one client can't swamp you, routes requests to the right place and records what happened. The management layer around it adds a developer portal, documentation, versioning and analytics.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Newer platforms also handle calls to and from AI models and MCP servers, because those look a lot like API traffic and need the same controls.

The security checklist the NCSC uses

The NCSC's guidance on securing HTTP-based APIs is organised into seven areas: secure development practices, authentication and authorisation, data in transit protection, input validation, DoS attack mitigation, logging and monitoring, and limiting exposure.

That list doubles as a buying checklist. A good gateway helps with authentication, rate limiting against floods of requests, logging and keeping internal endpoints hidden. Input validation and secure development still sit with your developers, so don't assume a gateway covers everything.

Gateways are often tied to your cloud, so read how AWS compares with Azure.

Questions to ask before you choose

  1. Can we run it in our own cloud, on our own servers, or only as a hosted service?
  2. Which authentication methods do you support out of the box?
  3. How do rate limits and quotas work for different customers?
  4. Is there a developer portal where partners can sign up and read the docs?
  5. Can it manage AI model calls and MCP traffic as well as ordinary APIs?
  6. What happens to our configuration if we ever move to another gateway?

If your APIs send email, my SendGrid and Mailgun comparison helps you choose a sender.

Signs your APIs need a front door

  • Keys live in spreadsheets. Nobody knows which are still in use.
  • One client can slow everyone down. There are no limits.
  • Partners keep asking for docs. Each answer is a one-off email.
  • You can't see who called what. Logs are scattered or missing.

Do you make API management or API gateway software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing an API management platform

If you live on one cloud and only have internal APIs, the cloud's own gateway is usually the path of least resistance. Once partners, customers or several clouds are involved, an independent platform gives you more freedom to move later.

Run a small pilot with one real API before you sign anything long, and get your developers to judge how pleasant it'll be to configure. Their goodwill decides whether the gateway gets used well. For ideas on keeping that team productive, see my roundup of developer productivity tools that work.

Frequently asked questions

What is an API management platform?

It's software that sits in front of your APIs to control access, apply limits, route traffic, publish documentation and report on how the APIs are used.

What's the difference between an API gateway and API management?

The gateway handles live traffic. API management is the wider set of tools around it, such as portals, analytics, versioning and governance.

Is there a free API gateway?

Yes. Several gateways are open source and free to run yourself, though you'll need the skills to host and update them.

Do small businesses need API management?

Only once APIs are shared outside the team or start to multiply. Before that, a cloud provider's basic gateway is often enough.

Can API gateways manage AI traffic?

Many now can. Some treat calls to AI models and MCP servers as another kind of API traffic, with the same limits and logs.

How do API gateways protect against attacks?

They check who's calling, enforce rate limits, block malformed requests and record activity, which helps you spot and stop abuse.
