Best Qualitative Data Analysis Software: 10 Options

The best qualitative data analysis software depends on your research: a free open source tool suits students and small projects, an academic suite suits large interview and mixed methods studies, and a research repository suits product and UX teams. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Thirty interview transcripts on a desk is a special kind of overwhelm. Qualitative data analysis software lets you code passages, group themes and find the quote you half remember, without a wall of sticky notes.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from free open source coders to AI-assisted suites used by universities. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If you're still writing your questions, my customer interview prompt pack can help.

Qualitative data analysis software at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version, a free app or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.

Ten qualitative analysis tools to consider

Condens

Best for: Product and UX teams that want a research repository where raw data turns into insights the whole team can find later.

Dedoose

Best for: Social science researchers who want to analyse interviews, focus groups, photos, video and survey data together, online.

Marvin

Best for: Product and research teams that want to collect feedback, centralise customer knowledge and analyse it with AI.

MAXQDA

Best for: Academic and market researchers who want automatic transcription, analysis tools and AI help in one program for Windows and Mac.

NVivo

Best for: Universities and research teams that want AI to surface cross-case patterns and themes across a whole corpus, with the evidence shown.

QualCoder

Best for: Students and researchers who want an open source app for coding text, images, audio and video files on their own computer.

Quirkos

Best for: Students and first-time qualitative researchers who want simple software that helps them see patterns in text data quickly.

Taguette

Best for: Researchers who want a free, open source tool to import materials, highlight and tag quotes, then export the results.

Transana

Best for: Teams who want qualitative analysis with optional Claude AI exploration of collections, which the vendor suggests for non-confidential data only.

webQDA

Best for: Research groups that want web-based, collaborative analysis of text, images, video, audio, tables, PDF files and YouTube videos.

Academic QDA suite or research repository?

Academic QDA software focuses on rigorous coding, memos, queries and mixed methods, which suits theses, evaluations and published studies. Research repositories focus on storing and sharing customer research across a product team, so insights don't get lost after the project ends.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Both code transcripts, but they don't serve the same readers. A thesis examiner and a product manager want different things from your analysis.

Anonymise before you upload

The UK Data Service says many data contain information that could directly or indirectly identify individuals, households or small groups, and effective anonymisation enables responsible data sharing.

That matters more now that many tools run in the cloud and offer AI features. Before you upload transcripts, strip or replace names, places and job titles that could identify someone, and check what your ethics approval allows.

Questions to ask before you start a project

  1. Which data types can it handle: text, audio, video, images or survey data?
  2. Can several researchers code the same project at once?
  3. Does it run on our computers, in the cloud or both?
  4. How do AI features handle confidential data?
  5. Can we export codes and quotes for a report or thesis?
  6. What happens to the data when a subscription ends?

Features that make coding faster

  • Quick coding. Highlight, tag and move on.
  • Search and queries. Find every passage on a theme in seconds.
  • Team projects. Coders work together without merging files by hand.
  • Clean exports. Quotes and codes go straight into the write-up.

When highlighters and spreadsheets stop working

More than a dozen transcripts, several coders or a deadline that needs a clear audit of how themes were found are the usual triggers. At that point, a QDA tool saves days and makes your method easier to defend.

Do you make QDA software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing QDA software

Students should check what their university already licenses, then try a free tool if they want something lighter. A tool you understand fully will serve you better than a big suite you open twice.

Research teams should run a pilot with a handful of real transcripts and two coders. If coding feels slow or exports are messy, it'll only get worse at scale. For collecting the data in the first place, my survey question swipe file is a handy starting point.

Frequently asked questions

What is qualitative data analysis software?

It's software for organising and coding non-numerical data, such as interviews, focus groups, open survey answers, images and video, so you can find themes and evidence.

Is there free qualitative data analysis software?

Yes. Taguette and QualCoder are free and open source. Check the table for each tool's free plan status.

Is NVivo better than MAXQDA?

Neither's better for everyone. They're both established suites, so try each with your own data and see which way of working suits you.

Can AI code qualitative data for me?

Several tools now offer AI features that suggest themes or summaries, but you're still responsible for checking the coding and the evidence behind it.

Do I need to anonymise interview data?

Often, yes. The UK Data Service says many data could directly or indirectly identify people, and anonymisation supports responsible sharing.

Can I analyse video and audio?

Several tools here can handle audio and video as well as text, including Dedoose, according to its own site.
