Recurring Affiliate Programs: How Creators Build Monthly Commission Income

Recurring Affiliate Programs: How Creators Build Monthly Commission Income

Recurring affiliate programs can turn one useful recommendation into commission across several customer payments. That is more attractive than earning once, but it is not automatic passive income. The customer must keep paying, the referral must remain eligible and the program terms must still support the commission.

In this guide, I explain how recurring commission works, how to compare programs and what a good affiliate portal should show before you put your reputation behind a product. I also compare current primary-source examples from HubSpot, Kit, Webflow and Semrush.

If you are building the program from the brand side, start with my guide to creating an affiliate program that pays for itself. My comparisons of SaaS affiliate platforms and Shopify affiliate apps then show how the tracking, payout and portal experience changes across different business models.

If you are new to affiliate marketing, start with my affiliate marketing for beginners guide. It separates recurring commission from the get-rich-quick nonsense that gives the model a bad name.

What are recurring affiliate programs?

A recurring affiliate program pays commission more than once when a referred customer continues paying for a subscription. A program might pay for twelve months, for the life of the customer or only while the affiliate maintains a performance tier. Read the duration as carefully as the percentage.

Suppose a creator refers ten customers to a $100 monthly product at 20% recurring commission. The first month could produce $200. If all ten customers stay, the second month adds another $200 without another first purchase. If three cancel, the next payment falls to $140. Recurring commission compounds only while eligible customers remain active.

This is the same compounding effect I describe in my honest guide to earning passive income: the work is front-loaded, but the income only continues while the product keeps delivering value.

Recurring commission does not always mean lifetime commission

Current official program pages show how different the same headline can be:

HubSpot advertises 30% monthly recurring commission for up to one year, with a 180-day cookie window.

Kit advertises 50% of referred customer payments for the first twelve months. Longer 10% to 20% commission depends on maintaining a qualifying affiliate status.

Webflow pays 50% revenue share on a qualified new user’s first subscription, covering up to twelve months of an active monthly plan or one annual plan purchase.

Semrush currently uses flat rewards of $100 to $300 per sale and $10 per free trial rather than recurring commission.

How to vet the best recurring affiliate programs

1. Start with product and audience fit

A high commission cannot rescue a recommendation your audience does not need. Choose products you can test, explain and place inside content you would still publish without an affiliate link. The best recurring affiliate programs are attached to products customers keep because the product keeps solving a problem.

2. Check the exact commission basis

Ask whether the percentage applies before or after discounts, credits, refunds and taxes. Check which products and plans qualify, whether annual purchases are treated differently and whether upgrades or renewals remain attached to the referral.

Use my affiliate commission structure cheat sheet to compare flat, recurring, tiered and hybrid offers. Rekomi’s commission-rate guide explains the operator’s margin and retention logic behind the headline percentage.

3. Read the duration

Write the end condition in plain English. Twelve months, customer lifetime and status-dependent continuation are different offers. If the rules can change, check whether existing referrals are protected or moved to the new terms.

4. Test attribution

Check the cookie window, first-click or last-click rule, coupon attribution and treatment of trials. A long cookie window is useful, but a personal coupon can protect attribution when somebody hears a code on a podcast or changes device before buying.

Rekomi’s affiliate tracking overview shows how links, coupon attribution and first-party tracking can protect credit when the buying journey is not a single clean click.

5. Understand reversals

Refunds, cancellations, chargebacks and fraud can reverse commission. The portal should show the original sale and the adjustment. A lower headline rate with a clear audit trail can be more valuable than a higher rate with unexplained deductions.

6. Check payout timing, minimums and fees

Find the locking period, payment cadence, minimum payout and available bank or PayPal routes. Note any withdrawal fee. A $100 minimum can leave a small balance trapped for months, while monthly fees reduce low-volume earnings more than they reduce a large payout.

The Rekomi payout workflow is a useful example of the details to check: payment route, schedule, threshold, currency handling and the record of what moved from pending to paid.

7. Read the promotion rules

Check paid search, trademarks, coupon sites, email, self-referrals and disclosure requirements. Do not assume a tactic is allowed because another program permits it. The creator is responsible for honest claims and clear disclosure.

The FTC says affiliate relationships must be disclosed clearly and close to the recommendation or link. A plain statement such as I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. is clearer than the words affiliate link on their own.

If most promotion happens on social media, my social media marketing engine guide explains why trust and commercial intent matter more than follower count.

What a good affiliate portal gives you

What a creator keeps with Rekomi: 100% of commission, 25% recurring for life, a 60-day cookie, and only the payment processor’s cost at payout.

A useful affiliate portal is not a decorative dashboard. It is the shared financial record between creator and brand. Before promoting, check that it gives you:

Rekomi’s creator platform is built around that shared record, with campaign discovery, links, coupon attribution, live performance data and payout visibility in one account.

How Rekomi works from the creator side

Rekomi gives creators one profile and dashboard across participating campaigns. Creators can use tracking links and personal coupon codes, create product or page links and see clicks, sales, pending commission, paid commission and refund adjustments.

Tracking. Rekomi combines first-party cookies with signed server-to-server and coupon-code attribution options. Campaigns can use first-click or last-click attribution, while multi-touch attribution and sub-ID tracking are not currently shipped.

Payouts. Rekomi says brands can use weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedules, with Stripe Express direct deposit and PayPal fallback. Brands can set minimums, and balances below the threshold roll forward. The creator page states that the only deduction is the payment processor’s own cost: on the Stripe rail $2.25 at most once per calendar month plus 0.25%, and on the PayPal rail 2% of the amount sent, capped at $20.

Tax records. Rekomi is the payer of record for US creators, so the year-end 1099-NEC is handled through Stripe Express. Non-US creators use the dashboard earnings history for local reporting. Tax rules depend on year and jurisdiction. For payments made in 2026, current IRS guidance lists a $2,000 federal Form 1099-NEC reporting threshold. A reporting threshold does not decide whether income is taxable, so use current official guidance or professional advice.

Brand deals. Rekomi’s homepage advertises escrow-protected brand deals and says money sits in escrow until the work is delivered. The public fee sheet states that the creator pays nothing and the brand pays 3% of the deal (2.5% on Enterprise) with a $5 minimum and a $150 cap. Check the live deal terms before accepting a flat-fee collaboration.

Cost. Rekomi is free for creators to join and use for applications. It does not charge a membership fee, but the stated payout processing deduction still applies when funds are withdrawn.

A simple scoring system for recurring commission affiliate programs

Score each program from one to five across five areas: audience fit, product retention, commission clarity, attribution quality and payout reliability. Multiply audience fit and product retention by two. A program with a smaller commission but a product people keep can beat a generous offer attached to fast churn.

HubSpot30% monthlyBusiness and marketing audiencesPaid for up to one year

Webflow50% revenue shareDesign and developmentNew users and time cap
Semrush$100 to $300 per saleSEO and marketingFlat, not recurring

Content that earns recurring commission without losing trust

The strongest affiliate content helps somebody decide. Publish a tutorial, comparison, implementation diary or use-case page that shows where the product works and where it does not. Include original screenshots and explain the setup friction as well as the result.

Update the content when pricing, eligibility or the product changes. Recurring commission depends on customers continuing to see value. A recommendation that attracts the wrong buyer may create the first sale, then lose the renewal and the reader’s trust.

My guide to making passive income honestly makes the same point: expertise-led content survives because it helps the reader first, while thin affiliate content eventually loses both trust and traffic.

Conclusion

Recurring affiliate programs can compound, but the commission rate is only the headline. Duration, eligible plans, attribution, refunds, payment timing, fees and product retention decide what the offer is really worth.

Rekomi gives creators links, coupon attribution, live reporting and payout workflows in one account, with free membership and disclosed payout processing costs. Its network is still early, so review each campaign’s live terms before publishing.

Creators can review Rekomi’s current creator experience before applying to campaigns or building content around an offer.

Not necessarily. Current programs use twelve-month limits, one annual payment, customer-lifetime terms or status-dependent extensions. Check the stated end condition.

What should an affiliate portal show?

At minimum: links, attribution rules, eligible plans, clicks, sales, refunds, pending and paid commission, payout timing, minimums, fees and program rules.

Do creators pay to join Rekomi?

Rekomi says creator membership and applications are free. Its creator page separately discloses a payout processing deduction when funds are withdrawn.
