An AI consultant in the UK should do three things: find the repeatable work that eats your team's week, build the AI workflows that do it inside the tools you already use, and leave your team owning them. I'm Lilach Bullock, a UK AI implementation consultant with 21 years in marketing. I work with owner-led businesses across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, remotely and on UK hours, and I build what I recommend rather than handing you a deck.
TL;DR
Most UK AI consultancies sell strategy, platforms or a transformation programme. Small and mid-sized UK businesses need something narrower: two weeks of measurement, two or three automations that pay back inside a quarter, and a team trained to run them. That's the whole service. It works the same in London, Manchester, Glasgow or a market town, because none of it depends on where you are.
What a UK AI consultant should actually deliver
A measured map of where the hours go. Enquiries, follow-up, quoting, onboarding, reporting, content. Each one with a number of hours per week attached, so the priorities are obvious and nobody builds the wrong thing first.
Automations inside your existing tools. Your inbox, your CRM, your accounting package, your booking system. No new platform to buy, no vendor I'm paid to recommend.
Guardrails that fit UK rules. What data goes where under UK GDPR, what a person must review before it reaches a customer, and what we won't automate at all.
Handover. Documented workflows, staff trained on the prompts, and a monthly check so the automations keep working after I step back. You own everything.
How the 90 days run
Weeks 1 to 2: measure. Interviews with the people who do the work, a count of the repeatable hours, and a shortlist ranked by payback.
Weeks 3 to 8: build. Two or three workflows, tested on live enquiries and real documents, with a person reviewing outputs until you trust them.
Weeks 9 to 12: hand over. Training, documentation and a monthly review. Most clients keep me on for the next two or three workflows once the first ones are paying.
Who this suits in the UK
Owner-led businesses and teams of roughly five to fifty people: professional services and accountancy practices, agencies, trades and construction firms, e-commerce brands, recruiters, coaches and consultants, and SaaS companies without an internal data team. The common thread is repeatable process that a person is still doing by hand. If you're a large enterprise with a data science function, you need a different kind of help.
UK AI consultant or UK AI consultancy?
A consultancy sells you a team and a retainer. A consultant works alongside you on the handful of automations that matter, builds them with you and leaves. For a business under a few million in turnover, the consultant model is nearly always the better buy, because you pay for outcomes rather than headcount and you keep the workflows when the engagement ends.
Where I work in the UK
Everywhere, remotely, on UK hours. I've written a guide for each of these cities covering the local sectors where AI pays back fastest: London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield. If your town isn't listed, the process is identical. If you're a smaller business, start with AI consultants for UK small business, which is the honest hiring guide, or what an AI consultant for small business does.

Frequently asked questions
What does an AI consultant in the UK do?
A UK AI consultant finds the repeatable work in your business, such as enquiries, follow-up, admin, reporting and content, builds AI workflows that do it inside the tools you already use, and hands them to your team with documentation and training.
How do I choose an AI consultancy in the UK?
Ask for one live example of a workflow they built and run themselves, ask who owns the workflows when they leave, ask what they would refuse to automate, and ask how your data is handled under UK GDPR. A consultancy that answers all four clearly is worth a call.
Do I need a London-based AI consultant?
No. Almost all AI implementation happens inside cloud tools and on video calls, so a consultant anywhere in the UK, or working on UK hours remotely, can serve a business in Manchester, Glasgow or Cardiff on the same terms as one in London.
How long does a first AI project take for a UK small business?
Usually 6 to 12 weeks: two weeks to measure where the hours go, four to six to build and test two or three automations, and two to hand over and train the team.
Is AI consulting only for large UK companies?
No. Owner-led businesses and small teams get the fastest payback, because the founder is usually still doing the admin the automations remove.
How is UK data protection handled?
Every workflow is designed around UK GDPR: we agree what data may go into which tool, keep customer data out of anything that trains on it, and a person reviews anything customer-facing until you trust it.
