To mute someone on Discord, join the voice channel, open their options and choose Mute. That only changes what you hear. Moderators with the Mute Members permission can use Server Mute to silence a person for everyone, and it lasts until someone unmutes them.
Somebody's mic is picking up their dishwasher, or a loud voice keeps drowning out the rest of the call. You don't want a fuss, you just want quiet. Discord has a few kinds of mute, and the trouble is that they do very different things, so the one you reach for might not be the one you need.
Here's a plain breakdown: muting someone just for yourself, muting people for the whole server if you're a moderator, muting a noisy channel, and muting your own mic. I've stuck to what Discord's own pages say, and I'll flag where menus vary.
Which kind of Discord mute do you need?
| What you want | Type of mute |
|---|---|
| Stop hearing one person, without telling them | Mute them on your own device |
| Stop everyone in the server hearing a person | Server Mute, a moderator action |
| Stop alerts from a busy channel or server | Mute the channel or server |
| Stop your own mic being heard | Mute yourself |
Muting one person on Discord just for yourself
This is what most people mean. A personal mute changes only what you hear. In Discord's developer documentation, a local mute is described as one-directional: it stops only the muting person from hearing the other participant. In plain terms, they carry on talking and everyone else still hears them, but you don't.
To do it in a call, open the person's options from the voice channel list or from their profile in the call and look for the Mute option. On desktop that's usually a right-click on their name, and on mobile it's a tap on their profile while you're in the call. Menus vary by app version, so if you can't see Mute, look for it beside the volume control for that person.
Two things worth knowing. Because it's one-directional, the person you muted can still hear you, so don't say anything you'd rather they didn't hear. And it only affects voice, not their text messages. For text you'll want a different tool, such as blocking someone on Discord.
Using Server Mute on Discord as a moderator
If you run the server, you can silence a person for everybody. Discord's permissions guide says Server Mute requires the Mute Members permission, and that it prevents anyone in the server from being able to hear this user speak. The mute lasts until a member with the server mute permission removes it.
That wording matters. Server Mute isn't a timer and it isn't a warning, it's a switch that stays on. If you hand out the Mute Members permission, think carefully about who gets it. I'd keep it to a small group of moderators you trust, and set it up through roles on your Discord server so it's deliberate rather than accidental.
Muting a Discord channel or server so alerts go quiet
Sometimes the noise isn't a person, it's the pings. Discord's help says muting a channel or a server prevents unread indicators and notifications from appearing, unless someone mentions you. That's a personal choice that only affects your own account, not anyone else's.
This is a good fit for busy community servers where you only need to dip in now and then. If you've outgrown a community entirely, leaving a Discord server is the cleaner option.
Muting yourself on Discord
Your own mute is the simplest of the lot. Discord's blog on keyboard shortcuts says Ctrl or Cmd with Shift and M toggles your mute, and Ctrl or Cmd with Shift and D toggles deafen. Those shortcuts control your own microphone and audio, nothing else. If you present on calls or run live sessions for clients, set a push-to-mute key so background noise doesn't ruin the take.
Mute, deafen, block and report on Discord compared
These four get mixed up constantly:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Mute: quiets sound. A personal mute only affects what you hear.
- Deafen: stops you hearing the channel at all, and is a self-setting.
- Block: a stronger step for someone who keeps contacting you, covered in my guide to blocking people.
- Report: for harassment or breaking Discord's rules. My guide to reporting someone on Discord shows the route.
If anyone is threatening you or you feel unsafe, report it to Discord and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
Running a calm Discord voice chat as a community owner
If you host events or calls for a business, a few habits stop you reaching for the mute switch so often:
- Write short voice rules in your welcome channel, such as using push-to-talk if you're in a noisy room.
- Keep a small, trusted group of moderators with the Mute Members permission.
- Use quieter, separate channels for different kinds of chat, so a lively game doesn't drown out a support call.
- Say clearly when a Server Mute is only temporary housekeeping, so people don't feel punished.
If you can't mute someone on Discord
When a mute doesn't seem to work, check this list:
- You're trying a Server Mute without the Mute Members permission.
- You muted a channel, which stops alerts but doesn't silence someone's voice.
- You muted them for yourself, so everyone else can still hear them.
- You're not in the voice channel at the time, so the option isn't showing.
If a person's behaviour is the real problem, a mute is only a stopgap. Talk to the server's moderators, or report them through Discord.
