How to Make a Slideshow in Canva (With Music and Transitions)

To make a slideshow in Canva, search for Slideshows, pick a template, then drag in your photos and videos and add music from the Audio library. Add transitions between pages and set how long each slide shows. Download it as an MP4 video, or use Present with Autoplay to play it on screen.

A photo slideshow is one of the easiest pieces of content to make and one of the most useful. Think event highlights, a product range, client results, a team welcome video or a birthday montage for a colleague. Canva turns a folder of photos into a polished, music-backed slideshow in about ten minutes.

How to make a slideshow in Canva, step by step

  1. Log in and search for Slideshows, or start a Video or Presentation design.
  2. Pick a template, or start blank at the size you need.
  3. Upload your photos and videos and drag one onto each page.
  4. Add a short text caption where it helps the story.
  5. Open the audio library and drag in a soundtrack.
  6. Add transitions between pages and set how long each page shows.
  7. Preview it, then select Share, Download and MP4 Video.

How to add transitions between slides

  1. Select Pages at the bottom of the editor to show thumbnails.
  2. Hover between two page thumbnails and select Add transition.
  3. Hover over a transition to preview it and click to apply.
  4. Use the Duration slider. Canva allows 0.1 to 2.5 seconds.
  5. Choose a direction, if the transition has one.

Pick one transition style and use it throughout. A different effect between every slide feels like a dated wedding video.

How long should each slide show?

Set the timing so people can take each photo in without getting bored. For a social montage, two to three seconds per photo usually feels right. For an event screen people glance at in passing, go longer. If your slide has text, give viewers enough time to read it twice.

Add music the right way

Canva's slideshow page highlights its music library, with plenty of free tracks and premium ones on Canva Pro. Drag the track onto your design, trim it to fit and fade it out at the end. If you're posting on social media, stick to tracks you're licensed to use, because platforms can mute or flag videos with music you don't have the rights to.

The catch: free means free, until you use premium content

Canva says creating a slideshow is free, with no limit on how many you make or download and no watermarks added. That holds true as long as you stick to free photos, videos and music. The moment you drag in premium stock footage or a premium track, you're into Canva Pro territory. If a watermark appears, check for premium elements and swap them for free ones or your own uploads.

The other free-plan quirk: when downloading MP4, keep the quality at the default 1080p. Changing it, even to a lower setting, brings up an upgrade prompt.

Playing your slideshow on a screen

For a loop at an event, reception desk or trade show stand, open your Presentation design, select Present and choose Autoplay. Canva plays the slides automatically without you clicking. For anything that has to run reliably all day, download it as an MP4 and play it from a laptop or TV instead, so a wobbly internet connection can't stop it.

What you can upload

Canva accepts video in MOV, GIF, MP4, MPEG, MKV and WEBM formats, up to 1GB each, so most phone and camera footage will upload without converting. For photos, upload the highest quality versions you have. Blurry photos look even blurrier when they fill a whole screen.

Slideshow ideas for small businesses

  • Event highlights posted the day after.
  • Before and after results for a service business.
  • A product range with one product per slide and a call to action at the end.
  • Client testimonials as quote slides between photos.
  • A behind-the-scenes week in your business. My post on brand content for social media has more ideas.

Common slideshow mistakes

  • Too many photos. Twenty great photos beat sixty average ones. Be ruthless and cut the near-duplicates.
  • Mixed orientations. Vertical and horizontal photos side by side look messy. Crop them to match the design's shape.
  • Music that drowns the story. If there's a voiceover, turn the music right down underneath it.
  • No ending. Finish on a slide that tells people what to do next, whether that's visiting your website or booking a call.
  • Forgetting captions. If there's speech, add captions. Lots of people watch with the sound off.

Don't worry about making it perfect. A simple slideshow that goes out this week does more for your business than a flawless one that's still sitting in your drafts weeks later.

Quick checklist before you download

  • Right size for the platform you're posting on.
  • One transition style, used consistently.
  • Music trimmed and faded out at the end.
  • Text readable on a phone screen.
  • No premium elements, unless you're on Pro.

My verdict

Canva is the quickest way to turn photos into a slideshow that looks professional. Use a template, keep transitions simple, add licensed music and download as MP4 at 1080p. For an on-screen loop, use Autoplay or play the MP4 from a device. If you want to pair it with a recorded voiceover or demo, my picks for screen recording software are a good next step.
