To leave a Discord server, click or tap the server name at the top of its channel list, choose Leave Server and confirm. On a computer you can also right-click the server icon. If you own the server, transfer ownership to another member first, because Discord's Support team can only reassign abandoned servers in limited cases.
Server lists fill up fast. A launch group you joined for one webinar, a giveaway server, a course community that wrapped up ages ago: they all sit in the left-hand column, pinging away. Leaving the ones you no longer use is one of the easiest ways I know to make Discord calmer, and it takes seconds.
Here's how to leave from a computer and from the phone app, what changes once you've gone, the special case for server owners, and the gentler options if you're not quite ready to walk out.
Leave a Discord server on desktop
Discord's help describes the server dropdown menu, which you open by pressing the server name in the upper-left corner or by right-clicking it. That's where the leave option lives.
- Open Discord on your computer and select the server you want to leave.
- Click the server name at the top left, or right-click the server's icon in your server list.
- Choose Leave Server from the menu. It's usually near the bottom and shown in red.
- Confirm in the pop-up that appears.
Leaving more than one server at a time isn't an option, so if you're clearing several, repeat these steps for each icon.
Leave a Discord server on the mobile app
- Open the Discord app and tap the server's icon in the left-hand list.
- Tap the server's name at the top to open its options.
- Scroll down and tap Leave Server.
- Confirm when Discord asks.
Menus vary by app version and between iPhone and Android, but the server name is always the way into the server's own options on mobile, according to Discord's notifications help.
What changes after you leave a Discord server
Once you've left, the server vanishes from your list and you stop seeing its channels and notifications. Your roles in that server go with it, so if you come back later you'll usually start fresh, without the moderator or member roles you had before.
- To rejoin, you'll need a fresh invite link, unless the server is public and listed somewhere you can find it.
- Your old messages don't disappear from the channels. Leaving isn't the same as deleting what you posted.
- If you were in a voice channel there, you'll be disconnected.
Discord's help articles don't describe sending members an alert when you leave. Some servers run bots that post when people come and go, though, so don't assume it's completely invisible.
Leaving a Discord server you own
Owners are a special case. If you created the server, walking away without a plan can leave it stranded. Discord's Support team only steps in to transfer ownership from an inactive owner when strict criteria are met, such as the server having at least 100 active members and the person asking being an admin or moderator. Most small servers won't qualify.
So if you own the server and want to leave while the community carries on, transfer ownership first. Discord's help says to open the Members list, right-click or tap the member, choose Transfer Ownership and confirm, entering a code if you use MFA. Discord says you'll still be a member afterwards, with access set by your new role, and then you can leave like anyone else. Choose carefully: once it's transferred, Support can't transfer it back.
If you'd rather close it altogether, only the Server Owner can delete a server, and that's permanent.
Quieter options than leaving a Discord server
Sometimes it's the noise you want gone, not the community. These options keep your seat:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| What bothers you | What to try instead of leaving |
|---|---|
| Too many pings | Change the server's notification settings or mute it |
| One noisy channel | Mute just that channel |
| One person | Ignore or block them |
| Clutter in your list | Group servers into a folder |
To change notifications, Discord's help says to open the server dropdown on desktop, or on mobile tap the server name, then the Notifications icon and Server Notification Settings. The conversation carries on, you just stop being nagged by it.
One more distinction people mix up: leaving a server isn't the same as logging out. If you share a family computer and want your whole account off it, sign out of Discord itself, the same way you'd follow my steps for signing out of YouTube on a shared device. And if you've noticed a contact vanish from a group on another app and wonder whether they left or blocked you, my guide on telling if someone blocked you on Messenger explains the signs there.
Leaving Discord servers as a creator or business owner
If you use Discord for work, I'd do a quick audit every few months. Keep the servers where your customers, collaborators or peers really talk, and leave the ones you joined for a single event. It makes the servers that matter easier to find, and it means notifications you see are ones you'll act on.
If you run your own server, it's also a nudge to make leaving easy for others. A clear rules channel and sensible default notifications keep people around far longer than a server that pings everyone for every message.
If you can't leave a Discord server
- You're the owner. Transfer ownership first, or delete the server if you're closing it.
- The pop-up closes but nothing happens. Update or restart the app, try the browser version, and check discordstatus.com for problems on Discord's side.
- The server keeps coming back. A linked account or app that adds you automatically may be the cause, so check your connected apps and contact Discord through its help centre if it continues.
Frequently asked questions
How do I leave a Discord server?
Click or tap the server name to open its menu, choose Leave Server and confirm. On a computer you can also right-click the server icon in your server list.
Does Discord tell people when I leave a server?
Discord's help doesn't describe a leave alert, but some servers use bots that post when members leave, so it may be noticed.
Can I leave a Discord server I own?
Transfer ownership to another member first, then leave. Discord says you stay a member after a transfer, and Support can't transfer it back.
Can I leave several Discord servers at once?
No. You'll need to leave each server one at a time from its own menu.
How do I rejoin a server I left?
You'll usually need a new invite link from someone in that server, and your old roles won't come back automatically.
