To block someone on Discord, open their profile from a server's Members list, your Friends List or a DM, select the three-dot menu and choose Block. On a computer you can also right-click their name. The catch: in servers you share, Discord says a blocked person can still message, tag and interact with you there.
Blocking on Discord works differently from blocking on most social apps, and that surprises people. It cuts off direct messages and friend requests, but if you and the other person share a server, they don't vanish from it. Knowing that up front helps you pick the right tool, whether it's a pushy stranger in your DMs or someone causing trouble in a community you run.
Here are the desktop and mobile steps from Discord's Blocking and Privacy Settings article, what blocking does and doesn't change, and when Discord's newer Ignore option is the better fit.
Block someone on Discord from a computer
Discord's help gives two routes on desktop and in the browser:
- From a server: open the Members list, click the person's name to open their profile, select the ellipsis menu (the three dots) and choose Block.
- From your Friends List or a DM: right-click the person's name and select Block.
- Confirm when Discord asks you to.
Block someone on the Discord mobile app
- In a server, open the Members list and tap the person's name.
- On their profile, tap the ellipsis (three dots).
- Tap Block, then confirm.
You can also start from your Friends List or a DM: open their profile there, tap the ellipsis and choose Block. Menus move around a little between app versions, but the ellipsis on the profile is the place to look.
What blocking someone on Discord changes
According to Discord's help centre, once you block someone:
- You can't send them messages.
- If you were friends, the friendship is removed.
- They can't send you new friend requests.
- Their profile details are hidden from you by default, though you can still open their profile with View Profile.
And here's the part that catches people out. In servers you both belong to, Discord says a blocked person can still message, tag and interact with you there. You simply stop getting notifications for their messages. So blocking quiets someone, but it doesn't remove them from shared spaces.
Blocking vs ignoring someone on Discord
For situations where blocking feels too heavy, there's now an Ignore option. Its help article says ignoring hides new messages, DM and server message notifications, profiles and activities from that person, and the ignored user isn't told. Unlike blocking, it doesn't remove them as a friend, and you can still send them DMs if you choose.
| What you need | Better choice on Discord |
|---|---|
| Stop someone messaging or friending you | Block |
| Take a break from someone without a fuss | Ignore |
| Remove someone from a server you moderate | Kick or ban them, if you have permission |
| Someone breaking Discord's rules | Report them, then block or ignore |
On mobile, Discord's ignore help says you'll find the list of accounts you've blocked and ignored under Settings, then Content and Social. That's the place to review or undo either one.
Unblocking someone on Discord
If you change your mind, go back to the person's profile, tap or click the ellipsis and choose Unblock. On a phone you can also open Settings, then Content and Social, and work from the list of blocked accounts. Unblocking doesn't restore the friendship automatically: you'd need to send a new friend request.
Blocking on Discord if you run a server
If you're a server owner or moderator, remember that blocking is a personal setting. It protects you, not your members. If someone is causing problems for others, use the moderation tools your role allows, such as timing them out, kicking or banning them, and keep a note of what happened.
- Set clear rules in a pinned channel, so actions you take are easy to explain.
- Give trusted moderators the permissions they need, so you're not the only one dealing with problems.
- Encourage members to block or ignore people themselves and to report rule-breaking to Discord.
If your group also chats on other apps, the steps there are different. My guides on blocking someone on WhatsApp and blocking someone on Facebook walk through each one.

Before you block someone on Discord, save what you need
If the messages are nasty enough that you might report them later, deal with that first. Once you've blocked someone, their messages get harder to find, and a report works best when it points at the exact message. Here's the order I'd follow:
- Take screenshots of the messages, with the username visible.
- Report the message or profile through Discord's own report option while it's in front of you.
- Then block or ignore the person.
- Tell a moderator if it happened in a server, so they can act on their side too.
It only takes a minute, and it means you're not scrolling back through a painful conversation later. Keep the screenshots somewhere private, too.
When blocking someone on Discord isn't enough
Blocking stops contact, but it doesn't tell Discord anything. If someone is harassing you, threatening you, sharing harmful content or pretending to be someone else, report them through Discord's own reporting tools as well, so its safety team can review it. If you're in danger, contact the police.
If they keep finding new ways to reach you, review your privacy settings so only friends can message you, and tell the moderators of any server you share with them.
