The Medium Partner Program pays writers a share of paying members' subscription money, based on how long members read your paywalled stories and how they engage. You need an active Medium membership, at least 1 published story, a complete profile, a bank in a supported country and to be 18 or over. Payouts go through Stripe once you pass 10 US dollars.
Writers ask me about Medium because it's one of the few places where you can earn from words alone, with no audience of your own to start with. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Medium doesn't pay per view or per clap, and it doesn't publish a typical rate, so I'll walk you through what its own help pages say and how to read your numbers.
How the Medium Partner Program pays writers
The money comes from Medium's paying members. When a member reads, listens to or engages with a story you've put behind the paywall, you get a share of their membership dues. Non-members can still read your work, but Medium is clear that their reads don't count towards your earnings, even if they arrive through a Friend Link. A member who opens that same Friend Link does count.
That single fact explains most of the confusion. A story with thousands of views can earn very little if most readers aren't members, while a quieter piece read closely by members can do better than you'd expect.
What decides how much Medium pays you
Medium's earnings article lists the parts of the calculation. None of them comes with a fixed rate, but together they tell you exactly what to work on.
- Member reading time. Reading and listening are combined. A member read only counts once a paying member has spent 30 seconds or more with your story, and idle time isn't counted.
- Engagement points. Built from that reading time plus the claps, highlights and replies members leave.
- Boost bonus. Stories Medium chooses to Boost earn engagement points at a higher rate.
- External traffic bonus. Member reads from outside Medium get a 5% bonus. Readers who find you through a search engine attract an extra slice of the budget, and reads that come from your email notifications also earn at a higher rate than reads from the feed.
- New member conversions. If a non-member hits your paywall and joins to keep reading, the story earns a one-time amount. This replaced the old referral scheme that ran from 2021 to 2025.
- Read ratio adjustment. Medium compares members who read for 30 seconds or more against all members who opened the story. Clickbait that people abandon is adjusted down; stories that deliver are adjusted up.
For audio, Medium counts a maximum of two full listens per member. Earnings update daily and can take up to 48 hours to settle, so don't panic if yesterday's numbers look low this morning.
Medium Partner Program requirements
There's no application to wait on. According to Medium, you're enrolled the moment you meet every requirement, and it'll show you which one is missing if you're not there yet. Here's the list:
- An active Medium membership subscription.
- At least 1 published story.
- A complete profile.
- A bank located in a country that's eligible for payouts, with your tax residence there too.
- Being 18 years of age or older.
- Agreeing to the Partner Program Terms and the policy on content eligible for the paywall.
The supported country list is long. It includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines and South Africa, among many others. Medium notes that outlying territories of supported countries aren't eligible, so check the full list on its help page if you live somewhere like that.
How Medium pays out and when the money arrives
Medium uses Stripe for payouts and Tipalti to collect your tax details. Stripe needs your legal name even if you write under a pen name. Payouts only go once your total reaches 10 US dollars; anything below that rolls over and waits for a later payout, and in some countries Stripe sets its own higher minimum.
Medium says payouts are typically started by the 10th of each month for the previous month's earnings, then take another 5 to 7 business days to reach your bank. Your dashboard shows a rollover balance whenever you've got unpaid earnings sitting there.
| What | How it works | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays | A share of paying members' dues | Medium enrolment help page |
| What counts | Member reads of 30 seconds or more, plus engagement | Medium earnings calculation page |
| Payout minimum | 10 US dollars, rolls over if not reached | Medium payouts page |
| Payout timing | Started by the 10th, then 5 to 7 business days | Medium payouts page |
| Payout route | Stripe, with tax details through Tipalti | Medium enrolment help page |
Medium Partner Program pitfalls to watch for
The one that catches people out is setup. You can paywall stories before you've finished your payout details, but if your balance reaches 10 US dollars and your Stripe or tax information stays incomplete for 30 consecutive days, Medium makes your enrolment inactive and takes your stories off the paywall. Finish the payout checklist on day one.
Policy matters too. If a story becomes ineligible because it breaks a rule, Medium says it can withhold payment for it. Stories also only earn while they're public and set to earn, so unlisting something stops it earning from that point.
Then there's tax. Medium says plainly that it can't give tax advice. What you earn is income, so talk to an accountant or your national tax authority about how it applies to you.

How to earn more from the Medium Partner Program
Because the formula rewards members who stay, the best lever is writing that holds attention past the first screen. A clear, honest headline helps the read ratio. A strong opening paragraph helps the 30-second test. And sharing your stories outside Medium, on LinkedIn, in your newsletter or through search, picks up the external traffic bonus.
Medium's own wording points to SEO settings, so fill in your story's search title and description. If writing is the skill you're building, my take on whether learning copywriting is worth your time covers how the same craft pays off well beyond Medium.
I'd also treat Medium as one stream rather than the whole plan. Plenty of writers use it to test ideas, then turn the stories that land into guides, templates or courses. My guide to making passive income with digital products shows how that next step works.
Is the Medium Partner Program worth joining?
If you already write regularly, the honest answer is that it costs you a membership and some setup time, and it can pay you for work you'd publish anyway. It won't replace a salary for most writers, and Medium doesn't promise any amount. Judge it on your own dashboard after a few months of steady publishing, not on screenshots from other people.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Medium pay per read?
Medium doesn't publish a per-read rate. Writers earn a share of member subscription money based on member reading time, engagement, bonuses and a read ratio adjustment, so two stories with the same views can earn very different amounts.
Do I need followers to join the Medium Partner Program?
No. Medium's requirements are an active membership, at least 1 published story, a complete profile, a bank in a supported country and being 18 or over. There's no follower threshold and no application review.
Do non-member reads earn money on Medium?
No. Only paying members' reading and engagement count. Non-members can read through a Friend Link, but those reads don't add to your earnings.
When does Medium pay writers?
Medium typically starts payouts by the 10th of each month for the previous month, once your balance reaches 10 US dollars. The money then takes another 5 to 7 business days to reach your bank through Stripe.
Can I use a pen name on Medium and still get paid?
Yes, you can write under a pen name, but Stripe needs your legal name for payouts and Medium collects your tax details separately.
