The short version: most Marketplace listings sit in Pending because Facebook's automated review system has not finished checking the listing, which usually takes anywhere from a few minutes up to 24 hours. If it is still pending after a full day, the most likely cause is a photo, title, or description that tripped an automated filter, often around brand names, health claims, or a restricted category, and it needs a manual edit rather than just waiting longer.
Why is my Facebook Marketplace listing pending?
Every Marketplace listing passes through an automated review before it goes live to buyers. This system checks photos, the title, the description, the price, and the category against Facebook's Commerce Policies before anything is shown publicly. Most listings clear this in minutes because the system is designed for speed on ordinary items like furniture, clothing, and electronics. A listing stays in Pending for longer when something in it needs a closer look, whether that is an image quality issue, wording that resembles a restricted claim, or a category that carries extra restrictions, such as anything health related, animals, or items that look like weapons even when they are not.
It helps to remember that this review process runs the same way for a first time seller and for someone who has sold hundreds of items on Marketplace before, since the check is applied to the listing content itself each time rather than building up trust that skips the review later. A long selling history can make repeated flags less likely over time, but it does not exempt any single listing from going through the same automated check on its own merits.
How to check the actual status of your listing
- Open the Facebook app, tap Marketplace, then tap your profile icon and select Your Listings, and Selling. Find the listing and check the label under it, which will say Pending, Under Review, Rejected, or Live.
- If it says Rejected rather than Pending, Facebook has already made a decision and it will not clear on its own. Tap the listing for a reason, if one is given, and edit accordingly before resubmitting.
- Check your notifications from Facebook and Marketplace specifically, since a rejection or request for more information is sometimes sent there rather than shown clearly on the listing itself.
- If the listing still shows Pending after 24 hours with no further message, treat that as a signal something in the listing needs changing rather than continuing to wait.
The most common reasons a listing gets stuck
- Photos that include a watermark, a phone number, a website address, or text overlay of any kind are frequently held for review, since Facebook restricts contact details and outside links inside listing images.
- Titles or descriptions that mention a health benefit, a cure, or a medical claim, even for something ordinary like a supplement or fitness item, are treated cautiously by the automated system.
- Brand names used incorrectly, particularly on anything that could be mistaken for a counterfeit, such as designer clothing or electronics using a brand name in the title without being the actual manufacturer, are commonly flagged.
- Categories that carry extra scrutiny by default include anything alcohol related, animals and pets, weapons or anything shaped like one, and supplements, since these sit under Facebook's regulated goods policies.
- A price that looks unrealistic for the item, either very low or very high compared to similar listings, can also trigger a manual check for a legitimate second look.
- Posting several listings in a short space of time from a newer account can trigger a wider review across all of them at once.
Fix it on iPhone
- Open the listing under Your Listings and tap Edit rather than deleting and reposting, since editing an existing pending listing is more likely to clear review than starting fresh.
- Remove any text, watermark, or logo overlay from photos and replace them with plain photos of the item taken directly in the app's camera.
- Reword the title and description to describe the item plainly, taking out any health claim, brand comparison, or superlative language such as "best" or "guaranteed," and resave.
- Check the category selected matches the item exactly, since an item placed in the wrong category, particularly a restricted one by mistake, is a common and avoidable cause.
- Confirm your Facebook account has a confirmed profile photo and some activity history, since brand new accounts with no history posting straight to Marketplace face more scrutiny.
Fix it on Android
- The Marketplace interface and steps are the same as iPhone, but Android users should also check Settings, Apps, Facebook, Permissions, and confirm Photos and Storage access is fully allowed, since a blocked permission can affect how images upload and get processed by the review system.
- If you used a third party app to edit or crop your photos before uploading, try uploading a photo taken and used directly from the phone's own camera roll without extra editing, since some heavily edited or unusually compressed images take longer to clear automated review.
- Restart the app after making edits rather than relying on the listing refreshing on its own, since Android sometimes caches the older pending status briefly.
Fix it on desktop
Facebook Marketplace works through a web browser at facebook.com as well as the app, and the review process is identical either way. If you listed through desktop, go to Marketplace, click Your Account in the left menu, then Your Listings, and click into the pending item. Desktop gives a slightly clearer view of any policy reason shown next to a Rejected status, so if you are struggling to see why a listing was refused on mobile, checking the same listing on desktop is worth doing before editing.
What does not fix it
A few habits get suggested in seller forums that do not reliably move a listing out of Pending, and some make the situation worse rather than better.
- Repeatedly deleting and reposting the same listing does not speed up review and can make an account look like it is trying to bypass a rejection, which risks a longer restriction.
- Messaging Facebook's general support inbox with no reference to the specific listing rarely gets a useful reply, since general inboxes are not set up to review individual pending items quickly.
- Changing your profile photo or bio has no effect on how quickly an individual listing clears review.
- Lowering the price does not clear a review that is being held for a content or category reason rather than a pricing one.
- Logging out and back in does not refresh or speed up the backend review process.
When to contact support
Contact Facebook's Help Centre, reachable through the app under Menu, Help and Support, Help Centre, then searching Marketplace, if a listing has stayed in Pending for more than 48 hours with no Rejected status and no message explaining why. If a listing is marked Rejected and you believe the reason given does not apply, most rejection notices include an option to request a review directly from that screen, and that is the fastest route rather than a general enquiry. Facebook does not offer phone support for individual Marketplace listings, so the in-app Help Centre and the review request option on a rejected listing are the two real channels.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a normal listing take to go from Pending to Live?
Most straightforward listings, such as furniture, clothing, or household items with plain photos and a clear description, clear review within minutes to a few hours. Anywhere beyond 24 hours without movement usually means something specific in the listing needs changing rather than more time passing.
Does editing a pending listing restart the review from the beginning?
Yes, in most cases an edit sends the listing back through the same automated check, so if the previous version had already been sitting for a while, expect a short new review window after saving changes rather than an instant fix.
Can a Marketplace listing be pending because of my account rather than the item?
Yes. Newer accounts, accounts with limited activity history, or accounts that have had a previous listing rejected can see longer or more frequent Pending statuses across the board, separate from what the individual item is.
Is there a way to see the exact policy that flagged my listing?
Sometimes. A Rejected listing often includes a stated reason and a link to the specific Commerce Policy it matched, viewable by tapping into the listing. A listing still marked Pending, rather than Rejected, usually does not show a reason yet because a final decision has not been made.
Should I contact the buyer who messaged me while my listing is still pending?
You can reply to messages while a listing is pending, since messaging is not blocked, but be clear with the buyer that the listing is still under review and may not be publicly visible to other shoppers yet, so they understand why they might not see it if they search for it themselves.
