The short version: if Marketplace won't load, won't let you list an item, or has vanished from your menu, the most likely cause is that your account is new or has been restricted, your region doesn't fully support Marketplace, or the app has a stuck cache. Clearing the app cache and checking your account status fixes most cases within a few minutes.
What's really happening
Marketplace is treated by Facebook as a separate, more tightly controlled feature than the rest of the app, because it involves buying, selling and meeting strangers. That means it has its own eligibility rules on top of your normal Facebook account rules, covering your age, your account age, your location, and your recent activity. When Marketplace stops working, it's almost never a random glitch. It's usually one of those eligibility checks quietly failing in the background, or a local fault with the app itself.
It helps to separate the two categories early, because the fix is completely different depending on which one you're dealing with. Account and region issues need to be resolved through your Facebook settings or by waiting them out. App faults are fixed on your phone in a couple of minutes.
The four most common causes
1. Your account is new or has limited trust
Facebook restricts Marketplace access for accounts that are brand new, or that haven't built up much activity yet. This is deliberate, and it's there to cut down on scam listings. If you've just created your account, or you rarely post or interact with anything, Marketplace may be locked or heavily limited until your account looks more established.
2. Your account has been restricted
If you've had a listing removed before, been reported by a buyer or seller, or breached Marketplace's commerce policies, even unknowingly, Facebook may apply a temporary or standing restriction. This can range from being unable to create new listings to not being able to see Marketplace at all.
3. Marketplace isn't fully available in your region
Marketplace has been rolled out unevenly across the world, and some countries only have partial access, for example being able to browse but not sell, or not having it at all. If you've recently travelled, or you're using a VPN, Facebook may be reading your location as one where Marketplace access is limited.
4. You're under 18
Marketplace requires you to be 18 or over. If your account's date of birth is set to under 18, or Facebook's age verification systems have flagged your account as possibly underage, Marketplace access will be blocked regardless of your actual age, until that's resolved.
5. The app itself has a cache or update problem
Separate from anything account related, the Facebook app can simply get stuck. A corrupted cache, a pending update, or a patchy connection can make Marketplace fail to load, show a blank screen, or spin endlessly, even though your account is completely fine.
Fixes to try, in order
- Check your app is up to date. On iPhone: open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and update Facebook if there's a pending update. On Android: open the Play Store, search Facebook, and update if needed. An outdated app is one of the most common causes of Marketplace simply failing to load, and it's the fastest thing to rule out. If Marketplace still won't load after updating, move to clearing the cache.
- Clear the app's cache. On Android: go to Settings, then Apps, then Facebook, then Storage, then tap Clear Cache, and reopen the app. On iPhone there's no separate cache clear option, so instead offload the app: go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, find Facebook, and tap Offload App, then reinstall it from the App Store, which keeps your account but clears the stored data. If Marketplace loads normally after this, the problem was local to the app. If it still fails, the issue is more likely with your account or region.
- Check your account's date of birth and standing. Go to your Facebook profile, tap Settings, then Personal Information, and check your date of birth is correct and shows you as 18 or over. While you're there, check for any notices under Settings, then Account Status, or Support Inbox, which is where Facebook posts restriction notices. If there's a restriction listed, follow the appeal link Facebook provides rather than trying to work around it.
- Check whether Marketplace is available where you are. If you're travelling or using a VPN, turn the VPN off and confirm your phone's location services are showing your real location, since Facebook uses this to decide what to show you. On both iPhone and Android this is under Settings, then Privacy, then Location Services, or Settings, then Location, and Facebook should be set to Allow. If Marketplace still doesn't appear once location is corrected, it's likely a genuine regional limitation rather than a settings issue, in which case there's no fix on your end beyond waiting for the rollout.
- Build up some ordinary account activity. If your account is new, spend a few days using Facebook normally, posting, commenting, and adding a profile photo, before trying Marketplace again. Accounts that look established are far more likely to be granted Marketplace access than ones that were created purely to sell something. If Marketplace still isn't available after a week of normal activity, check the Account Status page again for a specific restriction notice.
- Log out and back in on both the app and browser. Log out of Facebook completely, restart your phone, then log back in and try Marketplace again from both the app and a web browser at facebook.com. Testing on the browser as well as the app helps you work out whether the fault is with the app specifically or with your account across the board.
If you can browse but can't sell
A common variation is being able to see Marketplace listings but not being able to create your own. This is nearly always an account trust issue rather than a technical fault, since browsing has a much lower bar than selling. Build up ordinary activity on your account, make sure your profile photo and some basic information are filled in, and avoid creating multiple listings in a short space of time once you are able to sell, since doing that too fast is what triggers a fresh restriction.
If listings disappear after you post them
If your listing goes live and then vanishes within minutes or hours, that's a moderation removal rather than a loading fault. Facebook's automated systems scan new listings for banned categories, prohibited items, and suspicious pricing patterns, and pull anything that trips those filters, sometimes wrongly. Check your Support Inbox for the specific reason, and if you believe it was removed in error, use the appeal option there rather than reposting the same listing immediately, which can make the restriction worse.
iPhone and Android at a glance
| Step | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Update the app | App Store, profile icon | Play Store, search Facebook |
| Clear stored data | Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Offload App | Settings, Apps, Facebook, Storage, Clear Cache |
| Check location settings | Settings, Privacy, Location Services | Settings, Location |
How Marketplace access tends to build back up over time
If you've worked through the checks above and Marketplace is still limited rather than fully blocked, it helps to know roughly how Facebook tends to loosen these restrictions. It's rarely an instant switch from no access to full access. More often, browsing comes back first, then the ability to message a seller, then finally the ability to list an item yourself. Each stage tends to need a bit more account activity and a bit more time behind it before the next one opens up. Trying to force your way to full selling access straight away, by repeatedly logging out and back in or creating several listings in quick succession the moment you get partial access, tends to slow this down rather than speed it up, since it can look like exactly the kind of behaviour Facebook's automated checks are designed to catch.
A steadier approach works better in practice. Use your account normally for a week or two, keep your profile filled in with a real photo and some basic information, and avoid anything that looks like a burst of unusual activity. Most people find Marketplace opens up fully within that window without needing to do anything more dramatic than simply being a normal, active user of the rest of Facebook in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Marketplace restriction usually last?
It varies. Minor first-time issues can clear in a day or two, but repeated policy breaches can lead to a longer or standing restriction. Check your Account Status page for the specific timeframe Facebook has given you.
Can I use Marketplace through a browser if the app isn't working?
Yes, and it's worth trying, because it tells you whether the fault sits with the app or with your account. Go to facebook.com on a browser and look for Marketplace in the menu.
Will creating a second account fix it faster?
No, and it can make things worse. Facebook treats a second account created to get around a restriction as a policy breach in its own right, which can affect both accounts.
Why does Marketplace work for my friend in the same city but not me?
Access is tied to your individual account's trust level and history, not just your location, so two people in the same place can have truly different access.
Is there a way to speak to a real person about a Marketplace restriction?
Facebook's support is largely automated, but the Support Inbox on your Account Status page is the correct place to submit an appeal, and it does get reviewed rather than ignored.
