Why Is the WhatsApp Blue Tick Not Showing?

The short version: the blue tick not showing almost always means either the other person has read receipts switched off, your message hasn't fully delivered yet, or you're mixing up blue ticks with the separate blue "read by" status in groups and WhatsApp Business. Nine times out of ten it's not a bug, it's a setting, and I'll walk you through which one.

What the blue tick means (and what people assume it means)

Two grey ticks mean delivered. Two blue ticks mean read. One grey tick means sent but not yet delivered. That's it, that's the whole system. But people read a lot into those ticks that isn't there, and that's where half the confusion starts.

Here's the bit most explanations skip: read receipts are a mutual setting, not a one-way camera. If you've switched off "Read receipts" in your own WhatsApp settings, you won't see blue ticks on messages you send to anyone, full stop, because WhatsApp disables the feature both ways. You can't spy on someone else's reading habits while hiding your own. That's by design, and it trips up more people than any actual glitch does.

The most common reason: they've turned off read receipts

If a contact has switched off read receipts in their own privacy settings, you will only ever see two grey ticks on messages to them, even once they've opened and read every single one. There is no way around this from your side. No setting on your phone fixes it, because the decision sits entirely with them.

Say you run a small events business and you've messaged a supplier three times about a delivery slot. Two grey ticks, no blue, for two days. You assume they're ignoring you. In reality they switched off read receipts eighteen months ago because a previous partner used to message them at 11pm and get annoyed if the tick went blue without a reply within the hour. Nothing to do with you, nothing to do with your message, just a setting they set once and forgot about.

Step-by-step: rule out your own settings first

  • Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Privacy
  • Check "Read receipts" is switched on
  • If it's off, turn it on, then wait for your next sent message to confirm ticks are showing again
  • Remember this setting is global, you can't enable it for one contact and disable it for another
  • Check you're not in a muted or archived chat where you might be glancing past the ticks without realising

That takes about 30 seconds and rules out the single biggest cause before you waste time troubleshooting your connection or reinstalling the app.

Connection and delivery issues

If you're only seeing one grey tick, the message hasn't even reached WhatsApp's servers yet, let alone the other person's phone. That's a connection problem, either yours or theirs, and it's a separate issue from read receipts entirely. I've written a full breakdown of what each tick stage means and the fixes for each one in this piece on undelivered WhatsApp messages, worth reading if you're stuck on one tick rather than two.

If you're stuck on two grey ticks and it's been more than a few hours, the message has delivered but hasn't been opened. That's normal. People don't open every chat the second it arrives, and assuming otherwise is how arguments start over nothing.

Group chats work differently

In a group, the blue tick only appears once every single member has read the message. If you're in a group of 12 and nine people have read it, you'll still see grey ticks, because WhatsApp waits for all 12. Tap and hold the message, then select "Info" to see exactly who's read it and who hasn't, rather than guessing from the tick colour alone.

This catches people out constantly in work groups. Someone assumes nobody's seen the announcement because the tick's still grey, when 11 out of 12 people have read it and one person just hasn't opened the app since yesterday.

WhatsApp Business accounts add another layer

If you're messaging a business account, read receipts can behave slightly differently depending on how the business has their chat tools set up, particularly if they're using automated replies or a shared inbox across a team. A message can show as delivered and read on the business's system before an actual human has seen it, because an automation opened the chat. If you're running or considering a WhatsApp Business account yourself, it's worth knowing this before you promise customers you'll reply the moment the tick goes blue, because that tick doesn't always mean a person looked at it.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you're setting one up from scratch, the real walkthrough for WhatsApp Business setup covers the settings that affect this, including auto-replies and labels.

Other things that quietly cause this

  • Airplane mode or Do Not Disturb on the recipient's phone can delay the read status by hours, even after they've technically opened the chat
  • If you've been blocked, you'll see one grey tick forever on every message, never two, which is different from the blue tick issue but gets mixed up with it constantly; if you suspect this, check the signs of being blocked versus unavailable rather than guessing
  • An outdated app version occasionally mishandles the tick display, particularly after a WhatsApp server update rolls out gradually across regions
  • Low storage on either phone can delay WhatsApp's background processes, including tick updates, by minutes to hours

The uncomfortable bit nobody likes admitting

A lot of "why isn't the blue tick showing" searches aren't really about the tick. They're about wanting proof someone read your message so you have grounds to feel annoyed, ghosted, or ignored. The tick system was built to tell you about message delivery, not to manage your expectations about how quickly someone should reply. Even with a blue tick showing, someone can read a message and forget to answer, get pulled into something else, or decide to reply later. The tick tells you nothing about intent, only about whether the message was opened. Chasing certainty from a feature that was never designed to give you emotional reassurance is where most of the frustration comes from, not from WhatsApp itself.

If you're relying on read receipts to manage client or team communication, that's a process problem, not a WhatsApp problem, and it's worth fixing the process instead of troubleshooting the app.

If you're still stuck

Try sending a fresh test message to a different contact who you know has read receipts on. If blue ticks show up fine there, the issue is specific to that one contact's settings, not your phone. If blue ticks don't show anywhere at all, go back to your own Privacy settings and double check "Read receipts" is on, because this is the single most overlooked fix and I'd put money on it being the cause more often than any server issue. If messages aren't sending at all rather than just missing ticks, that's a different and more common problem covered in this guide to WhatsApp not sending messages. And if you're only ever seeing a single tick rather than two, start with the one-tick specific fixes here instead, because the cause is usually different from a missing blue tick.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I only see grey ticks even though I know they've read my message?

They've switched off read receipts in their own privacy settings, which means you'll never see blue ticks on your messages to them regardless of whether they've read it, and there's no setting on your end that changes this.

Can I turn on blue ticks for just one contact?

No. The read receipts setting is global in standard WhatsApp, it applies to every chat at once, you can't enable it for one person and disable it for another.

Does the blue tick mean they've definitely seen the content of my message?

It means the chat containing your message was opened on their device, not that they necessarily read or absorbed every word, so don't treat it as proof of full attention.

Why do group chat ticks stay grey for so long?

Group blue ticks only appear once every single member of the group has read the message, so even one person not opening the chat keeps the tick grey for everyone.
