WhatsApp images not loading is most often a weak connection, so restart your phone, update WhatsApp and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Then check photo permissions: Photos and videos on Android, Full Access on iPhone.
Photos that sit as grey boxes, blurry squares or a spinning circle are one of the most irritating WhatsApp problems, particularly when a customer has sent a screenshot of an order or a supplier has sent a product shot you need right now. The text arrives fine, but the picture won't.
WhatsApp's help centre has a specific article for when you can't download, open or send media, and a second one on blurry photos. I've pulled the two together below, in the order WhatsApp gives its fixes, with separate steps for Android and iPhone because the permissions differ.
Why WhatsApp images won't load: the most common cause
WhatsApp is blunt about this one. Its help article says the most common reason you can't download, open or send media is a weak internet connection. Media, in WhatsApp's definition, covers photos, videos, audio, video messages, voice messages, documents, stickers and GIFs, so the same fixes help with all of them.
That's why the first steps are quick and take a minute or two. Start there before you change any settings.
First fixes when WhatsApp images aren't loading
On both Android and iPhone, WhatsApp recommends:
- Restart your phone, or turn it off and on.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version from your app store.
- Switch connections. If you're on Wi-Fi, try mobile data, and if you're on mobile data, try Wi-Fi.
- Contact your mobile provider if the connection itself seems to be the problem.
On Android, WhatsApp also suggests updating your phone to the latest version. And if you see the message 'This file format is not supported', WhatsApp says to check you're using the most up-to-date version of the app.
Checking WhatsApp photo permissions on Android
Without permission to reach your phone's storage and media, WhatsApp can't download, save or send photos. According to WhatsApp, the steps are:
- Open your phone's Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Photos and videos, then select Allow.
- If you also send audio files or documents, allow Music and audio and Files too.
The permission names depend on your Android version and phone brand. You might see Files and media, Storage, or separate options for photos and videos, music and audio, and files. WhatsApp says to make sure all the relevant ones are set to Allow or Allow all the time.
If permissions are already on and photos still won't load, WhatsApp suggests turning the permission off and back on, restarting the phone, and then clearing the WhatsApp cache through Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, Clear cache.
Checking WhatsApp photo access on an iPhone
On an iPhone, WhatsApp points to your photo library permissions. If you can only see some of your photos in WhatsApp, or none, try this:
- Open your iPhone's Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp.
- Tap Photos.
- Select Full Access.
WhatsApp explains the difference. With Limited Access, WhatsApp can only see the specific photos you've chosen, though you can tap Edit Selected Photos to add more. If you previously chose Don't Allow, change it to Full Access. If there's no Photos option under WhatsApp at all, it usually means WhatsApp hasn't asked for access yet, so open WhatsApp and try sending a photo and your phone will prompt you.
If photos still won't send after you've granted Full Access, WhatsApp suggests restarting your phone, force quitting WhatsApp and opening it again, and updating to the latest version.
Question marks or blank boxes instead of WhatsApp photos on iPhone
This one is worth reading carefully. WhatsApp says that if you see question marks instead of pictures in Media, Links, and Docs, or blank boxes instead of media in your chats, it might mean the media wasn't backed up to iCloud. WhatsApp's help article is upfront that, unfortunately, this means the media can't be recovered through that backup.
It's a good nudge to look after your backups. If yours is misbehaving, my guide to what to do when a WhatsApp backup is stuck is a sensible place to start.

Blurry WhatsApp photos versus photos that won't load
A blurry photo is a slightly different problem, and WhatsApp's separate help page gives two causes:
- WhatsApp can no longer find the photo on your device or SD card. This usually happens if the photo was deleted. WhatsApp's fix on Android is to open Settings, then Chats, and toggle on Media visibility, so photos are saved to your device.
- A weak connection when the photo was uploaded. WhatsApp's advice is the same as above: restart, update, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
WhatsApp also notes that HD media isn't currently available for statuses or profile pictures, so those may look softer than photos in a chat. If you'd like to control what lands in your gallery, my notes on stopping WhatsApp saving photos explain the saving side of the same setting.
WhatsApp images not loading on an Android SD card
If your phone uses an SD card, WhatsApp says problems opening or downloading media could be related to it. Check two things:
- The card has enough storage space. You might need to delete WhatsApp data from it to make room.
- Read-only mode is turned off.
If you're still stuck, WhatsApp says the SD card might be corrupted and need to be reformatted or replaced. That's a bigger step, so be sure your photos are saved elsewhere first.
WhatsApp images not loading on WhatsApp Web
On a computer, WhatsApp's advice is to restart the computer, make sure you're using the latest version of WhatsApp Web, and check your internet connection is stable. If you see a message saying the computer isn't connected, a steady connection is the first thing to check.
WhatsApp images not loading when you run a small business
If you take orders or enquiries over WhatsApp, a missing image can mean a lost sale. A couple of habits help:
- Ask the customer to resend the image on Wi-Fi if their upload looks slow.
- Keep your phone storage and WhatsApp updated, because storage problems and old versions both cause trouble.
- If you rely on images for orders, ask for the key details in text too, such as sizes or order numbers.

If WhatsApp images still won't load after these fixes
WhatsApp's article doesn't list further steps beyond the ones above, and I won't invent any. At that point, contact WhatsApp through its help centre or the support option inside the app, and tell it which phone you're on, which version of WhatsApp you have and exactly what you see: a grey box, a spinner, a question mark or a blur.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my WhatsApp images not loading?
WhatsApp's help centre says the most common reason is a weak internet connection. Restart your phone, update WhatsApp, and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to test.
How do I fix WhatsApp photos not downloading on Android?
Check Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions and allow Photos and videos. If it's already on, turn it off and back on, restart the phone, then clear the WhatsApp cache.
Why do WhatsApp photos show question marks on iPhone?
WhatsApp says question marks or blank boxes can mean the media wasn't backed up to iCloud, and that media can't be recovered through that backup.
Why are my WhatsApp photos blurry?
WhatsApp says a photo can look blurry if it can no longer be found on your device, often because it was deleted, or if the connection was weak when it was uploaded.
Does clearing the WhatsApp cache delete my photos?
WhatsApp's crash article says clearing the cache on Android won't delete your messages or chats. Check the steps on your phone before clearing anything else.
