The short version: WhatsApp doesn't run its own clock, it pulls the time from your phone's operating system, so when message timestamps look wrong the fault is almost always your device's date, time, or time zone settings rather than the app itself. Fix the phone and the app sorts itself out within seconds, no reinstall needed.
WhatsApp doesn't have its own clock
This is the bit people miss. WhatsApp has no internal clock of its own. It reads whatever time your phone tells it, stamps the message with that, and sends it. If your phone's clock is wrong, every timestamp in every chat will be wrong too, and no amount of updating or reinstalling the app will change that.
So when someone messages you at what feels like 3pm but WhatsApp says 1pm, the first place to look isn't WhatsApp's settings menu at all. It's your phone's own date and time settings, buried under General or System on most devices.
The five actual causes, in order of likelihood
Before you blame the app, run through these. I'd put money on it being one of the first three.
- Automatic time zone is switched off. Your phone is stuck on a time zone from a previous location, trip, or SIM swap.
- You travelled and the phone hasn't caught up. Flight mode, a weak signal on landing, or a VPN set to another country can all delay the automatic update.
- Manual date and time was turned on by accident. Someone (often you, months ago, trying to fix something else) switched off "set automatically."
- The sender's phone, not yours, is wrong. If one specific contact's messages always look off but everyone else's look fine, their clock is the problem, not yours.
- A genuine app glitch. Rare, but it happens after a buggy WhatsApp update, usually fixed by the next patch within days.
A worked example
Say you run a small online shop and you're messaging a supplier in another country through WhatsApp Business. You send an order confirmation at what your phone says is 10:00am. The supplier replies within minutes, but their reply shows as sent at 2:00am your time. You assume they're working through the night, or that WhatsApp has glitched.
In reality, nine times out of ten, this is simply the time zone difference being displayed correctly. WhatsApp always shows the time in the recipient's own zone, not the sender's. If you want to check whether it's a genuine fault rather than a time zone gap, compare the timestamp against your phone's lock screen clock. If they match, WhatsApp is doing its job and the "wrong" time is just somebody else's correct local time.
How to fix it, step by step
On an iPhone: go to Settings, then General, then Date and Time, and make sure "Set Automatically" is switched on. If it's already on and the time is still wrong, toggle it off and back on, which forces the phone to re-sync with the network.
On Android: go to Settings, then System, then Date and time, and check that "Use network-provided time" and "Use network-provided time zone" are both enabled. Samsung and Pixel phones hide this in slightly different menus, but the wording is nearly identical.
Once that's done, force-close WhatsApp completely (don't just switch away from it, close it from your recent apps) and reopen it. The timestamps should correct themselves immediately because the app re-reads the system clock every time it loads.
If that still doesn't work, restart the phone. A full restart forces every background process, including the clock sync, to refresh from scratch. This solves it in the vast majority of cases that survive the first two steps.
The uncomfortable bit nobody mentions
Most guides on this topic stop at "turn on automatic time" and leave it there. What they don't tell you is that WhatsApp's displayed time can be technically correct and still mislead you, because it shows the time a message was delivered to the server, not necessarily when it was typed. On a bad connection, there can be a lag of several minutes between someone pressing send and the message leaving their phone. So two messages can look out of order, or a reply can appear to have been sent before the message it's answering, purely because of network delay rather than any clock fault at all. If your business depends on precise message timing for compliance or record-keeping, don't rely on WhatsApp timestamps as a source of truth. Use them as a rough guide only.
This matters more than people admit if you're running a business on WhatsApp. If you've ever needed to prove exactly when a customer was told something, or when an order was confirmed, the timestamp alone isn't bulletproof evidence. It's a convenience feature, not a legal record.

What this means if you use WhatsApp for business
If you're managing client conversations on WhatsApp across different countries, time confusion isn't just annoying, it affects your response times and how professional you look. A client in Sydney messaging a supplier in Manchester needs to understand that "9am" in the chat means 9am for them, not for you. Some businesses switch their display to 12-hour format to make this clearer at a glance; if that's you, our guide on how to change WhatsApp time to 12 hour format walks through it on any phone.
It's also worth knowing what WhatsApp does and doesn't reveal about you more broadly if you're using it for client work. We've covered whether WhatsApp shows your location and whether WhatsApp can be traced, both worth a read if timestamps have got you thinking about what else the app quietly logs.
If you're building out real client workflows and your team is drowning in WhatsApp chats across time zones, that's usually a sign you need a wider look at how you're using automation and messaging tools in the business, which is exactly the kind of gap an AI consultant for small business gets brought in to sort out.
Quick checklist before you panic
- Check your phone's lock screen clock against WhatsApp's timestamp. If they match, there's no bug.
- Confirm automatic time zone is switched on in your phone settings, not just automatic time.
- Force-close and reopen WhatsApp after changing any clock setting.
- Restart the phone if the problem persists after the above.
- Check whether the contact in question is simply in a different time zone.
Tidying up your phone's housekeeping is also a decent moment to sort other WhatsApp clutter while you're in there, like old contacts or statuses you forgot to remove. Our pieces on how to delete contacts in WhatsApp and how to delete a WhatsApp status cover both in a couple of minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does WhatsApp show a different time than my phone?
This usually means your phone's automatic time zone setting is switched off, so WhatsApp is reading an outdated or incorrect zone from your device rather than any fault in the app itself.
Does WhatsApp show the sender's time or my time?
WhatsApp always displays timestamps in the time zone of the person viewing the message, not the sender's, which is why international chats often look confusing at first glance.
Can a WhatsApp update cause wrong timestamps?
Occasionally, yes, a buggy app update can briefly cause display glitches, but this is rare and usually resolved within days by the next official patch rather than anything you need to fix yourself.
Why does one contact's messages always show the wrong time?
If it's only ever that one person, the fault sits on their phone's clock or time zone settings, not yours, since WhatsApp timestamps each message using the sender's own device time before converting it for display.
