Spotify Premium Price in NZ: Individual, Duo, Family and Student

As of October 2026, Spotify Premium in New Zealand costs NZ$20.99 a month for Individual, NZ$28.99 for Duo, NZ$33.99 for Family (up to 6 accounts) and NZ$10.49 for Student. Individual, Duo and Family include 15 hours of audiobook listening a month, but on Duo and Family only the plan manager gets those hours.

New Zealand's Premium plans come with lossless audio and an audiobook allowance, which makes the price comparison less obvious than it looks. Below is every plan from Spotify's own NZ page, plus the audiobook and Family rules from Spotify's NZ support pages that change which plan is the better buy.

FamilyNZ$33.99Up to 6 Premium accounts15 hours, plan manager only

Every plan can be cancelled at any time. Duo is for couples at the same address; Family is for up to 6 family members at the same address, with parental controls over all plan members, and plan members under 13 get Premium benefits.

The intro offers New Zealand showed in October 2026

When I read the NZ page in October 2026, new Premium users could get Individual or Student for 1 month at NZ$0, and Family for 2 months at NZ$0, then the normal monthly price. Duo showed no intro price. The longer free period on Family is unusual, so it's worth checking whether it's still running when you sign up, but don't rely on it being there.

What the 15 audiobook hours really give you

Spotify's NZ support page on audiobooks explains how the allowance works, and three rules surprise people:

  1. Time is counted at normal speed. Spotify's own example: listen to a 5-hour audiobook at 2x speed and you still use 5 hours, even though you finish in 2.5.
  2. Unused hours expire every month. They don't roll over to the next billing period.
  3. Student doesn't include audiobook listening time at all, and on Duo and Family the hours belong to the plan manager. Members can't share them, though the plan manager can buy extra hours for members.

If you run out, Spotify offers Audiobooks+, a recurring add-on that adds hours each month, and one-time top-ups. Spotify says top-ups are valid for 12 months from purchase, but you lose access to them if you cancel your subscription unless you resubscribe. The catalogue itself is over 700,000 titles, according to the NZ Premium page.

Duo vs Family vs Individual in New Zealand

  • Two Individual plans would cost NZ$20.99 each. Duo gives two separate Premium accounts for NZ$28.99, so a couple at one address is better off on Duo.
  • Family is NZ$33.99 for up to 6 accounts. With three or more people at home, it's the obvious choice.
  • Only one person on Duo or Family gets the 15 audiobook hours. If two of you both get through audiobooks every month, factor that in.

How Spotify Family works in New Zealand

From Spotify's NZ Family support page: the plan manager is the only person who signs up and pays, can add or remove members and can't join other plans. Every member has a separate account and logs in with their own details. Members need to live with the plan manager and enter the same home address when they join, and they can only switch plans once every 12 months. Plan managers can also create managed accounts for young listeners.

Spotify Premium Student in New Zealand

At NZ$10.49, Student is half the Individual price in all but cents. It's for students enrolled in an eligible accredited institution of higher education, and not for anyone who has already tried Premium. Remember it has no audiobook hours. My guide to Spotify Premium Student covers verification.

What Premium includes in New Zealand

  • Ad-free music and lossless sound up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.
  • Offline listening, or Offline Backup to download automatically.
  • Full control: repeat, play albums in any order and skip as often as you want.
  • Your own AI DJ, daylist, Jam with friends in real time, Blend, and watching where you listen with one tap.
  • Fitness: 1.4k additional classes, powered by Peloton, plus millions of podcasts.

Cancelling Premium in New Zealand

Cancel any time from Manage your plan. Premium stays until your next billing date, then the account goes free and keeps your playlists and saved music. Cancel during a zero-priced free trial and you go free straight away, and that free trial can't be reactivated. If you cancel a Family plan, any managed accounts move to the free, ad-supported plan.

Got Premium through your phone or internet provider?

Spotify's NZ support pages flag two things for anyone billed through a partner company, such as a mobile or internet provider. If you can't see an option to change plan, your plan is tied to that partner, and you cancel through their contact link on your account page under Payment. And if you want to move to Family, you first need to cancel with the partner and wait for that Premium to end before setting up the new plan. Check which applies to you on your account page before you change anything.

My verdict

In New Zealand, Individual at NZ$20.99 is fair value once you count lossless sound and the 15 audiobook hours. Couples should take Duo, three or more people at home should take Family, and students should take Student, as long as they don't need audiobooks.
