Spotify Premium Family is one plan for up to 6 people who live together, the plan manager included, and only the manager pays. Every member keeps their own account and login, joins by invite, and has to enter the same home address as the manager.
The catch is the address check. As of October 2026, if Spotify can't confirm a member's address and they don't fix it within 7 days, they drop to the free plan and can't join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months from that date. They can rejoin the same plan, and that's all. Members who still had paid Premium time when they joined lose it, too. I'm working from Spotify's US help pages, so other countries may see slightly different options.
Who can join a Spotify Family plan
Spotify lists the rules for members plainly. To join, you need to:
- be logged into your own Spotify account, never the manager's;
- have an invite from the plan manager;
- live with the manager and enter the same home address when you join;
- not have switched plans in the last 12 months, because members can only switch once every 12 months;
- not manage a Duo or Family plan of your own.
The manager is the only person who signs up and pays. Spotify charges the manager the full amount whether or not anyone joins, and it never charges members. The manager adds and removes people and can't join anyone else's plan. If you want the numbers for your country, here's what Spotify Premium costs.
How to set it up and send invites
- Manager: on your account page choose Change plan (or Join Premium if you're on free), pick Premium Family, then enter your address and payment method.
- Manager: open Manage members, create an invite or copy the link, and send it.
- Member: log into your own account, open the link and tap Accept invite.
- Member: confirm it's the right account, enter the plan address and tap Confirm.
Payment has its own rules. You can't pay for Premium Family by mobile or through another company. If you pay that way today, cancel it and wait for it to end before you switch. If you already pay for Premium directly, billing moves over automatically, and your new payment date is likely to be a few days earlier to cover the difference in price.
When an invite link won't work
Most invite problems come down to the wrong account opening the link. If the manager and the member share a phone or laptop, the manager has to log out before the member opens the invite, or it lands on the manager's account. If you've lost track of which devices are signed in where, here's how to sign out of Spotify everywhere.
- Expired link: try opening it in a private browser window. If that fails, ask the manager for a fresh invite.
- Shared link: an invite expires once another member uses it, so each person needs their own.
- You run a plan already: you can't join while you manage a Duo or Family plan yourself.
How Spotify checks your address
Spotify asks members to verify the address when they join, when the manager changes address, or when it can't confirm the details. It says it doesn't track your location and only checks the address you give it.
A few rules trip people up. You can only pick an address in the country where your payment method was issued. If the address won't autocomplete, type the full address and select Find. If it's still missing, use your building, your street name or a close public building, and never someone else's address.
If the address can't be confirmed, the member gets an email and has 7 days to re-enter the full address. Miss that window or fail again and the 12-month lockout starts.
The QR code check, and why a screenshot fails
Some Family members are asked to verify by QR code instead of an address. This one has to happen in person:
- The manager opens the code: profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage.
- The member scans it with the Spotify mobile app, standing with the manager.
- It has to be done within 7 days.
The code changes every few seconds, so a screenshot sent over a messaging app won't work. Plan a moment when you're both in the same room.
What happens when the plan changes
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Address check fails or 7 days pass | Member drops to free; can rejoin the same plan only; locked out of other Family or Duo plans for 12 months |
| Manager removes a member they kept (moving to a smaller plan) | Slot opens; the new invitee gets Premium straight away and moves with the new plan |
| Manager removes a member they didn't keep | Member goes to free at once; no replacement invite |
| Manager cancels Family | Managed accounts for young listeners move to free with ads |
| Member joins with paid Premium time left | Their remaining Premium time is forfeited |
Removing someone or moving to a smaller plan
To remove a member and free the slot, the manager opens Manage members, selects the account under Plan members, then chooses Invite (to free up a slot) and Remove & invite. Removing members doesn't downgrade the plan, so the manager still pays for Family.

Moving to a smaller plan works differently. The manager picks which members to keep, and everyone else moves to Spotify free on the next billing date. Remove one of those non-selected members early and they go to free immediately, with no replacement invite in their place. If the manager cancels Family altogether, any managed accounts for young listeners move to the free, ad-supported plan.
Audiobook hours are the manager's
Family includes monthly audiobook listening time, but only the plan manager gets it. Members don't share it. The manager can buy listening hours for members separately if someone in the house is a big listener.
My verdict
Family is great value for a real household, and it's strict for anyone who isn't one. Before anyone joins, check you're all using the same address exactly as Spotify finds it, and do any QR check face to face. If you're a member with paid Premium time left, let it run out before you accept the invite. And if your address check email arrives, deal with it that day: a missed 7 days costs you 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
How many people can be on a Spotify Family plan?
Up to 6 family members who live together, including the plan manager.
Does Spotify check that Family members live together?
Yes. Spotify asks members to verify the address when they join, when the manager changes address or when it can't confirm the details. It says it doesn't track location and only checks the address.
What happens if I fail the Spotify Family address check?
You drop to free. You can rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, but you can't join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months from the failure date.
Can I screenshot the Spotify Family QR code?
No. The code changes every few seconds, so the member has to scan it in person with the mobile app within 7 days.
Does removing a member make my Family plan cheaper?
No. Removing members doesn't downgrade the plan. To pay less, the manager has to move to a smaller plan.
