How to Delete a Spotify Account (and Undo It Within 7 Days)

To delete a Spotify account, log in on the web, open Spotify's help page on closing your account and use the link to close it and delete your data. The detail people miss: Spotify emails a link to reactivate within 7 days, then the account can't be restored.

Maybe you've moved to another music app, maybe you've inherited a messy account full of old playlists, or maybe you just want fewer apps holding your data. Whatever the reason, closing a Spotify account is a bigger step than signing out, and Spotify gives you a short window to change your mind. I've read through Spotify's help pages so you know what happens before you click anything.

A quick heads-up before we start. Deleting and cancelling Premium are two different jobs, and mixing them up is the most common mistake I see. I'll cover both so you pick the right one.

Closing a Spotify account: the route Spotify gives

Spotify's help page for closing an account points you to a dedicated link, labelled Close your account and delete your data, which lives on the account section of Spotify's website. That page is where the closure happens, so it's best to do it in a browser while logged in to the account you want to remove.

  1. Log in to your Spotify account in a web browser.
  2. Open Spotify's help page on closing your account.
  3. Select the link to close your account and delete your data.
  4. Follow the confirmation steps Spotify shows you.
  5. Check your email for the message Spotify sends afterwards.

Spotify's help doesn't list every screen of the confirmation, and menu wording can change, so go with what the page in front of you says. If you're on a younger person's managed account, the help describes a route through Settings and privacy inside the app instead, so read that article if it applies to you.

What you lose when you delete a Spotify account

Spotify says closing the account deletes your data permanently from all Spotify apps and services. That includes playlists, saved music and your listening history, since they all belong to the account. Spotify's help page specifically warns that you'll lose access to any purchased audiobooks and to live tickets for future events.

So before you close it, do a quick tidy. Write down playlists you'd miss and check whether you've bought tickets through the account. Spotify's page doesn't offer a way to export your playlists, so take screenshots of the ones that matter if you want to rebuild them elsewhere.

The Spotify account reactivation window

This is the safety net. After you close the account, Spotify emails you a link that lets you reactivate it within 7 days. After those 7 days, Spotify says the account can't be reactivated and the process to delete your data starts.

Timing after closingWhat Spotify's help page says
Within 7 daysUse the emailed link to reactivate
After 7 daysCan't be reactivated; data deletion begins
After 14 daysYou can reuse the same email address for a new account

If you're deleting because you want a fresh start under the same email, that 14 day wait is worth planning around.

Cancelling Spotify Premium instead of deleting the account

Plenty of people only want to stop their plan, not erase everything. Spotify's cancel page says you can cancel Premium any time on your account page. Your Premium benefits stay until your next billing date, then the account switches to the free service. Your playlists and saved music remain in your library, and you can still log in and listen with ads.

If you signed up through a phone or internet provider, Spotify says to contact that company for help cancelling. And if you cancel close to your usual billing date, the next charge may already have gone through, so don't wait until the last minute.

Before you delete your Spotify account if you run a show or brand

Small-business owners and creators sometimes use one account for everything: personal listening, a brand playlist and podcast admin. Before you close an account like that, check what's tied to it. Spotify's pages treat podcast and creator accounts separately, so don't assume deleting a listener account removes a show, and don't assume it keeps one alive either.

If you publish a podcast, make sure your episodes are safe with your hosting service first. I like Spreaker as a way to publish and distribute podcasts for that, because your show lives on the host rather than in a listener login. And if Spotify is part of your brand's wider plan, my guide to how Spotify built its own brand is a useful read before you step away.

If you can't find the Spotify delete account option

People often get stuck because they look in the wrong place. Try these in order:

  • Use a web browser rather than the app, since the closure link sits on Spotify's website.
  • Make sure you're logged in to the account you want to close and not a second one.
  • Open Spotify's help page on closing your account and use the link from there.
  • If you can't log in at all, use Spotify's contact options on its support site.

Take a breath before you confirm. Closing an account is permanent once the 7 days pass.
