As of October 2026, Spotify Premium costs $12.99 a month for Individual, $18.99 for Duo, $21.99 for Family and $6.99 for Student in the US. In the UK, Individual is £12.99 a month and Family is £21.99.
Spotify sells the same four Premium plans in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, but each country page sets its own price. I've taken every figure below from Spotify's own Premium pages for the US, UK, Australia and Canada, so you can see what you'd pay where you live.

Duo is for two people under one roof, and Family is for up to six family members at the same address. Each person gets their own Premium account rather than sharing one login.
What Premium gives you over the free plan
Spotify's free tier plays music with ads and limits how you control your listening. Its Premium page lists what changes when you pay:
- Ad free music listening.
- Offline listening, so you can download songs or let Offline Backup do it automatically.
- Play songs in any order, repeat them and skip as many times as you like.
- Lossless music with sound quality up to 24 bit and 44.1 kHz.
- On Family, parental controls over all plan members, and members under 13 get Premium benefits.
If you mostly listen on a phone during a commute, offline downloads and unlimited skips are usually the features that make people upgrade. If you listen at home on good speakers or headphones, lossless audio is the bigger change, and Spotify lists it among the Premium benefits on its page, so check your app's audio quality setting after you upgrade.
The free months and who gets them
Spotify usually lets new Premium users start at $0. The current offers on its country pages differ:
- US: Individual is free for 2 months, then $12.99 a month. Spotify says the offer ends November 1, 2026.
- UK: Individual is £0 for 2 months, then £12.99 a month.
- Australia: the 2 month offer is on Family, then A$27.99 a month. Individual is free for 1 month, then A$15.99.
- Canada: Individual is free for 2 months, then CA$13.99 a month. Spotify says the offer ends November 1, 2026.
- Student: 1 month free in every country above.
All of these offers are only for people who haven't tried Premium before. If you've had a trial on the account in the past, you'll pay the full price from day one. My guide to the ways to get Spotify Premium for free covers the legitimate routes.
Audiobooks are part of the price now
Here's the detail many people miss when they compare Spotify with other music apps. Premium Individual includes 15 hours a month of listening from Spotify's audiobook subscriber catalogue, which Spotify says holds over 700,000 titles. On Duo and Family, those 15 hours belong to the plan manager only, not every member.
Spotify also sells a separate Audiobooks Access plan with the same 15 hours a month. Music on that plan stays on Spotify's free, ad supported service, so it suits people who mainly want audiobooks.
Spotify Student: what you need to know
The Student plan is the cheapest way into Premium, and in the US Spotify says it currently includes access to a Hulu plan, subject to eligibility. You need to be at an eligible accredited higher education institution. In Canada, Spotify notes the student offer isn't available to users in Quebec.
The same address rule on Duo and Family
Duo and Family are cheaper per person because they're meant for one household. Spotify's US page says Duo is for couples who reside at the same address, and Family is for up to 6 family members residing at the same address. If you're thinking of splitting a Family plan with friends who live elsewhere, that breaks Spotify's terms, so budget for separate Individual plans instead.

Audiobooks are a separate subscription, covered in Audible's plans.
How to choose the right plan
- If you live alone, pick Individual. It's the only plan with the full 15 audiobook hours just for you.
- If two adults share a home, compare Duo with two Individual plans. Duo is cheaper in every country listed.
- For three or more people at one address, Family is the best value, with up to six accounts.
- If you're a student, check your eligibility first, as Student is about half the Individual price.
- Use the free months only if you haven't had Premium before, and set a reminder before the first charge.
If you're moving from another service, here's how playlists move between Spotify and Apple Music, which works in reverse too.
My verdict
For a single listener, Premium Individual at $12.99 or £12.99 is fair value, especially now it includes audiobook hours. Couples should go straight to Duo, and any household with three or more listeners should be on Family rather than paying for separate accounts. Students should never pay the full price: the Student plan gives the same Premium features for far less.
