How to Get Your Small Business Found by AI

To get your small business found by AI, give the engines content they can understand and quote: allow AI crawlers, lead each page with a short direct answer, use real question headings, add FAQ and Organization schema, show a named owner or author, and earn a few mentions on trusted sites. Clear, structured, credible pages get named.

The short version: Your customers are starting to ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI which business to use, instead of scrolling a page of links. If you run a small business and AI does not name you, you are invisible at the exact moment someone is choosing. The good news is that getting found by AI does not need a big budget. It needs a readable site, clear answers, and your name on a few sources the engines trust. Here is how, and you can check where you stand now, free, with my AI visibility tool.

Why this matters for small businesses, not just big ones

There is a myth that AI search is a big-brand game. It is the opposite. Big brands are slow, and most of them have not done this work either. A small business that moves now can become the name AI gives before the bigger players wake up. I have watched this happen with search for twenty-one years. The ones who move first own the spot.

And the stakes are higher for you, because you do not have a brand name people already type in. When a buyer asks AI who to use, that answer is your shop window. If you are not in it, they never reach you.

What does it take to get found by AI?

Three things, and none of them need a marketing department.

A site the AI can read

The engines have to be able to reach your site and understand it. So make sure you are not accidentally blocking the AI crawlers, add basic structured data so they know who you are and what you do, and keep your key pages clean. If the engine cannot read you, it cannot name you.

Pages that answer real questions

AI matches questions to answers. So build your important pages around the actual questions your customers ask, and put a plain answer near the top of each one. A real FAQ page helps a lot here, because it lines up perfectly with how people query AI. Vague, padded pages get skipped. Clear ones get quoted.

Your name on the sources AI trusts

This is the one that decides it, and the one most small businesses never think about. For any topic, the engines lean on a set of sources they trust, and they pull names from them. If you are featured on those sources and your competitors are not, AI names you. Getting there means local directories, expert commentary, features, roundups and real relationships. It is the same earned-media work that has always built reputations, now feeding the AI answer.

How to find out where you stand

Stop guessing. Run your business name and the things you want to be known for through an AI visibility checker and look at three things. Does AI name you. Who does it name instead. And which sites does it pull from. That last list is your to-do list, because it tells you exactly where to get featured next. The free checker does it across all five big engines in under a minute.

What small businesses get wrong

They wait. They assume AI search is for later, or for bigger companies, and they keep pouring effort into channels that are getting more crowded. Meanwhile the businesses that start now are quietly becoming the default answer. The other mistake is doing the easy half, fixing the website, and skipping the hard half, the trusted mentions. The website makes you readable. The mentions make you the recommendation.

How this fits the bigger picture

Getting found by AI is part of a wider shift people are calling generative engine optimisation. If you want to understand the whole thing, start with what generative engine optimisation is. And if AI is already naming your competitors instead of you, read why your business is not showing up in AI.

FAQ

How do small businesses get found by AI? Make your site readable to the AI crawlers, answer your customers' real questions plainly, and earn mentions on the sources AI trusts for your topic. Start by checking where you stand with a free tool.

Do I need a big budget to show up in AI search? No. The foundations are cheap or free to fix. The work that takes time is earning trusted mentions, and that is effort more than money. Moving early is the real advantage.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Why does AI recommend my competitor and not me? Usually because your competitor appears on the sources AI trusts for that topic and you do not yet. The fix is to get named on those same sources.

How long does it take to get found by AI? It builds over weeks and months, because earning trusted mentions takes time. Starting now gives you a head start while most small businesses are still ignoring it.

The Exact Schema Markup That Got My Client Cited in ChatGPT Answers

Most guides tell you to "add schema markup" and leave it there. Here is what moved the needle for a florist client I worked with in Manchester last year. She was invisible in AI-generated answers about local flower delivery despite ranking on page one of Google. The fix was not adding more schema, it was fixing the specificity of what was already there. We changed her LocalBusiness schema to use the more precise Florist type, added a hasOfferCatalog property listing her six core service categories by name, and included areaServed with the actual postcodes she covered rather than just the city name. Within six weeks, her business started appearing by name in ChatGPT responses when users asked about same-day flower delivery in those specific postcodes.

The detail that most people skip is the description field inside schema. AI models pull this field when constructing answers because it reads like a human summary, not a data string. Write it as one or two sentences that answer the most obvious question a customer would ask, including your key differentiator. For that florist client it read: "Family-run florist offering same-day delivery across central Manchester and Salford postcodes, specialising in seasonal British-grown arrangements with no minimum order." That sentence showed up almost word for word in a Perplexity answer three months later.

Three schema properties worth prioritising right now if you are a small business trying to appear in AI results:

  • description: Write it as a direct answer to "what does this business do and for whom?" Keep it under 160 characters so it does not get truncated in source previews.
  • hasOfferCatalog: Name your services explicitly here. AI models treat named services as evidence of relevance when matching a user query to a source.
  • review with reviewBody: Embedding actual review text in your schema gives AI systems quotable, human-language evidence about your quality. One or two reviews with full body text beats a star rating aggregate every time.

I tested this approach across four small business clients between January and August 2024. All four saw citation appearances in at least one AI search tool within eight weeks of updating schema, compared to zero appearances in the three months before. Schema is not a magic switch, but at this stage in how AI search tools are trained and updated, structured data is still one of the cleaner signals you can send that costs nothing beyond a developer hour or two.

If you want the systems behind this built with you rather than for you, start with one to one AI implementation coaching.
