Semrush Alternatives for Small Businesses: Paid and Free Options

Several SEO tools cover what most small businesses use Semrush for. Ahrefs is known for backlink data, Mangools and SE Ranking suit smaller budgets and beginners, and Moz Pro suits people who like clear explanations. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and show how your own site performs in search.

That's the quick view. Free options change often, so check each tool's current plans page before you decide. Now let's look at each one in a little more detail.

What each Semrush alternative is known for

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is the name most people mention alongside Semrush. It's best known for its backlink index and a keyword tool that's easy to read. Its free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives you site audits and backlink data for sites you can verify. The limit is that the paid plans are built for people doing SEO seriously, so a casual user may not need them.

Moz Pro

Moz is one of the longest-running SEO companies, and it's known for Domain Authority, a score many people use to compare websites. Moz Pro covers keyword research, rank tracking, site crawls and links. Its strength is clear explanations, which suits beginners. Some users find its data less deep than the biggest suites.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking is popular with small businesses and freelancers. Rank tracking and site audits are its strong points, and the interface is friendly. The limit is that there's no free plan, just a trial, so test it with your own site before you commit.

Mangools

Mangools is a small bundle of tools, with KWFinder for keywords as its best-known part. It's simple, tidy and easy to learn. The limit is that it's lighter than the big suites, so it won't replace everything Semrush does.

Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest, from Neil Patel, gives quick keyword ideas, content ideas and a basic site audit. It's handy for business owners who want answers without a learning curve. Its data is less detailed than the bigger tools.

Serpstat

Serpstat packs keyword research, rank tracking, audits and backlink tools into one place. It suits small teams who want a lot of features in one login. The interface can feel busy at first, and plans change, so check what's included.

Similarweb

Similarweb isn't a classic SEO tool. It estimates how much traffic other websites get and where it comes from. That's useful for sizing up competitors. Treat the numbers as estimates, not facts. I've rounded up more free tools to check a competitor's website traffic if that's your main need.

What a small business needs from an SEO tool

Before you pay for anything, think about which of these four jobs you'll do every month. Most small businesses don't need all of them.

  • Keyword ideas. Finding the words your customers type into Google. Different tools give different numbers, so I've compared which keyword research tools are most accurate.
  • Rank tracking. Watching where your pages sit for the searches that matter to you. Useful once you've got content worth tracking.
  • Site audit. Spotting broken links, slow pages, missing titles and other technical problems. A quarterly check is plenty for many small sites.
  • Backlinks. Seeing which sites link to you and to your competitors. You can start with my guide on how to check your website's backlinks for free.

If you only need one or two of these, a lighter tool like Mangools or SE Ranking, or a mix of free tools, may be all you need. If you need all four plus competitor research, a bigger suite such as Ahrefs or Moz Pro makes more sense.

A simple way to decide: pick the two jobs that matter most to you, then run a free trial or free lookups on two tools side by side for the same handful of keywords and your own website. Look at which one you understand without a tutorial, and which one gives you a clear next step. The tool you'll open every week beats the one with the longest feature list.

The free-tools route

If you're just starting, I'd begin here. These tools come straight from the search engines, so the data is about your own site, not an estimate.

Google Search Console

Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site, how often your pages appear, which pages are indexed, and any problems Google has found. It's free, and every website owner should have it set up. It doesn't show competitor data.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools gives you similar data for Bing, plus its own site scan and keyword research. It's free too, and you can import your sites from Google Search Console to save time. Bing's results also feed other services, so it's worth a few minutes of your time.

Put those two together with a free keyword tool and you've got a solid base before you pay for any software. When you start wanting competitor insight or regular tracking, that's the time to try a paid tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to Semrush?

Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and show how your own site performs in search. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you own, and Ubersuggest and Mangools give a small number of free lookups. None replace a full paid suite, but together they cover a lot.

Which Semrush alternative is easiest for beginners?

Mangools, Ubersuggest and Moz Pro are known for clean layouts and plain explanations. SE Ranking is also popular with people new to SEO. Try a free trial or free lookups before you pay for anything.

Do I need a paid SEO tool for a small business website?

Not always. Many small businesses get a long way with Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a free keyword tool. A paid tool earns its place when you want competitor data, regular site audits or rank tracking across many keywords.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

They suit different people. Ahrefs is best known for backlink data and a clean keyword tool, while Semrush covers a wider range of marketing jobs, including ads and content. Pick based on the job you do most often.
