Can Thai Sellers Use Etsy? Payoneer, Baht and 6% Fees

Yes, Thailand is on Etsy's eligible list, with payments through a Payoneer account. Etsy pays in US dollars into Payoneer, and you withdraw to a Thai bank in baht.

Questions I'd ask before opening an Etsy shop in Thailand: Can I even register? Do I get baht? What happens between the sale and my bank? Etsy answers the first one clearly, and the other two have a catch worth knowing about.

Can a seller in Thailand register? Yes, through Payoneer

Thailand is on Etsy's list of eligible countries, with an asterisk. That asterisk means sellers there accept Etsy Payments through a Payoneer Payment Account instead of directly. Etsy's current Payments policy names Egypt, India, Pakistan and Thailand as the countries where Etsy Payments runs this way.

Thailand wasn't part of the newest wave of additions. Etsy's earlier announcement of Etsy Payments expansion in 2023 covered Ukraine, India, Japan, Thailand, Argentina, Chile and Peru, so Thai sellers have had this route for longer than people in Egypt or Pakistan. Older forum posts saying you can't open a Thai shop are out of date.

Do you get baht? Not straight away

This is the part that surprises people. Etsy's help centre says it only supports deposits in United States dollars into a Payoneer account. So your sales land as dollars first. You then withdraw from Payoneer to a Thai bank account, and the money reaches you in local currency.

The Thai baht is issued by the Bank of Thailand and is divided into 100 satang. The exchange rate Payoneer uses on the way from dollars to baht is the number that matters, because it sits quietly inside every withdrawal. If you price a handmade silk scarf, for example, work back from the baht you need at the end, not from the dollar figure on Etsy.

Costs on a sale from Thailand

The Etsy Payments policy table lists the payment processing fee for a bank account in Thailand as 6% + 0.30 USD. Etsy states the fee in dollars here, unlike countries with a local-currency fee, which fits the dollar deposit into Payoneer.

Two more costs sit on top:

  • Payoneer may charge a fee for its bank transfer withdrawal service, so check its current charges before you settle on a withdrawal habit.
  • If your listing currency differs from your payment account currency, Etsy adds a 2.5% conversion fee. Listing in dollars avoids it, since your Payoneer account is paid in dollars.

Add postage and packaging for fragile goods and the picture is more honest than any headline fee. A Thai seller shipping ceramics, silk or wooden pieces abroad will often find postage matters as much as the processing percentage, so price the whole journey: materials, your time, packing, postage, Etsy's fee and the baht you want left over.

It also helps to decide early how often you'll withdraw from Payoneer. Frequent small withdrawals mean more chances for a withdrawal charge to bite, while one regular withdrawal keeps things predictable and makes your records easier to follow when you sit down with an accountant.

What to have ready

Etsy's enrolment rules ask for a residential address and a valid bank account in an eligible country. For a Thai seller that means an address and bank account in Thailand, in your own name.

  1. Choose Thailand as the bank country when you open the shop.
  2. Connect or create your Payoneer Payment Account during onboarding.
  3. Verify your identity. Etsy asks individuals for identity details and, in certain locations, a tax number.
  4. Verify your bank account. For non-US accounts Etsy uses a test deposit or a bank document review, usually with 30 days to begin and 60 to complete after the first sale.
  5. Keep the names consistent. The bank account name should match your shop's legal and tax information.

Common ways a Thai shop gets stuck

  • Treating Payoneer as optional. It's the route Etsy uses for Thailand, so plan for it from the first day.
  • Setting prices from the dollar sale value and forgetting the baht conversion at the end.
  • Waiting too long to verify the bank. Missing Etsy's deadline can mean suspension.
  • Assuming the money is yours to spend instantly. Etsy says deposits follow a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule and are generally credited within five business days, and Payoneer withdrawals typically take 2 to 5 business days to reach your bank.

Tax, and where to look next

Etsy asks sellers to add taxpayer details as they approach the relevant thresholds, and it can suspend selling if the details are wrong. I can't tell you how Thai tax treats overseas Etsy income, so please speak to a local accountant, and keep every statement. Frequently asked questions

Is Etsy available in Thailand?

Yes. Thailand is on Etsy's list of eligible countries, with an asterisk meaning sellers use a Payoneer Payment Account to accept Etsy Payments.

Will Etsy pay me in Thai baht?

Not directly. Etsy deposits United States dollars into Payoneer, and you withdraw to a Thai bank account in local currency.

What are Etsy's fees for a bank account in Thailand?

The Etsy Payments policy table lists a payment processing fee of 6% + 0.30 USD. Payoneer may charge its own withdrawal fee, and Etsy adds 2.5% if your listing currency differs from your payment account currency.

Do I need a Thai bank account?

Etsy's rules ask for a valid bank account in an eligible country, and your shop country follows your bank country, so a Thai shop needs a Thai bank account in your name.

How long until a Payoneer withdrawal reaches my bank?

Etsy's help centre says it typically takes 2 to 5 business days after you request the withdrawal.
