Payoneer works in India, and its own pages say payments are automatically withdrawn to your Indian bank account, within 48 hours on one page and 24 hours on another. The catch is conversion: Payoneer lists 1-4% of the amount when a US dollar balance is paid out in rupees, and your bank may add fees.
If you're a freelancer or small seller in India, you've probably heard Payoneer mentioned in the same breath as getting paid by overseas clients. I wanted to see what Payoneer itself says about India, because the rules here are different from most countries. Here's what its pages say, what they leave open, and what I'd check before you rely on it.
Withdrawals to your Indian bank happen automatically
The thing that sets India apart is that you don't choose when the money moves. Payoneer's India pricing page says that for customers based in India, payments received to your Payoneer account are automatically withdrawn to your local Indian bank account within 48 hours. Its India onboarding guide gives a tighter figure, saying that once you've added your bank account, eligible payments are withdrawn within 24 hours of receipt, in line with Indian regulations.
Payoneer's India multi-currency page adds that the money can go to your local bank account or an EEFC account. Two pages, two timings, so don't plan a rent payment around either number. Look at the screen in your own account and ask your bank what it does with an incoming transfer.
What the rupee conversion costs
Because the withdrawal is automatic, conversion is the cost to understand. For a US dollar balance paid out to a rupee bank account in India, Payoneer's India pricing page lists a fee of 1-4% of the transaction amount. It says the exact fee depends on region and transaction volume and that you can view it in your account.
Payoneer also says that your bank, or any other payment provider not connected to Payoneer, may deduct processing, landing or intermediary fees from the withdrawn amount. So the number Payoneer shows isn't always the full picture of what reaches you. A quick call to your bank about incoming foreign transfers saves a nasty surprise.
Digital FIRC and why Indian freelancers care
Many Indian exporters and freelancers need paperwork showing that foreign money came in. Payoneer's Digital FIRC page describes a FIRC as a document issued by an Authorized Dealer bank as proof of payments received in foreign currency. It says FIRA/FIRS/NOCs are delivered to your Payoneer account at no cost.
Payoneer's onboarding guide goes further: eligible Digital FIRCs are delivered automatically for payments from more than 200 countries, within 72 hours of an eligible transaction, and you can download several at once. That's a real convenience if your accountant keeps asking for evidence. Whether it satisfies a particular bank or tax requirement is a question for your accountant, not for me.
Rules Payoneer says apply to Indian payments
Payoneer's own guide on receiving international payments in India says the country has strict regulations, including the documents required under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, usually called FEMA. It also says Reserve Bank of India purpose codes are used to describe the type of foreign currency transaction.
I'm not going to interpret FEMA for you. If you're new to invoicing overseas clients, the sensible step is to talk to a chartered accountant or your bank's foreign exchange desk before the first payment lands.
Getting paid by clients who don't use Payoneer
A common worry is that your client's own payment method won't work with Payoneer. Payoneer's guide says it can give you receiving account details in multiple currencies, so a client can pay by local bank transfer in their own country. For clients in unsupported regions or currencies, it says they can pay US dollars through a SWIFT receiving account.

There's one more fee point worth knowing. Payoneer's India multi-currency page says receiving payments in US dollars is free for customers from a short list of countries, India among them. It also lists a 0-1% fee for each payment received by local bank transfer in US dollars, with other currencies free of charge. Treat that as Payoneer's description and check your own fee page, because fees can differ by account.
The annual fee and the PayPal comparison
Payoneer's India pricing page says an annual account fee of 29.95 US dollars is only charged if you receive less than 6,000 US dollars, or the equivalent, in any twelve consecutive months. That's the usual trap for casual users: a quiet year can cost you.
Payoneer's guide also says PayPal has limited functionality in India. That's Payoneer describing a competitor, so read it with that in mind. If you want PayPal's own account of how India works, I've covered it in my guide to PayPal in India and what it allows, and my notes on how PayPal treats a neighbouring country show how different two South Asian countries can be.
