Interactions on Instagram is the number of actions people take on your content. For posts, Instagram counts likes, comments, saves and shares. For stories, it counts replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement. It's a count of actions, not people: one person who likes and saves your post adds two interactions.
Instagram Insights is full of similar-sounding words: views, viewers, reach, accounts engaged, interactions, profile activity. Interactions is the one that tells you whether people did something with your content after they saw it. Here's what goes into it on each format, using Instagram's own definitions.
Interactions by content type
| Content | What Instagram counts as interactions |
|---|---|
| Posts | Likes, comments, saves and shares |
| Stories | Replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement |
| Reels | Engagement on the reel, alongside views, watch time, viewers and follows |
Instagram's help pages describe the post version as the number of actions people take when they engage with your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. For stories, the list changes because stories have different buttons: replies, shares, sticker taps and link taps.
Interactions versus accounts engaged
This is where most confusion comes from. Interactions counts actions. Accounts engaged counts people. Instagram defines accounts engaged on stories as unique accounts that interacted with your story, for example by replying, sharing or tapping stickers.
- Ten people each liking and saving your post = 20 interactions, 10 accounts engaged.
- One person replying to three of your stories = 3 interactions, 1 account engaged.
If your interactions are high but accounts engaged is low, a small group of loyal followers is doing most of the work. That's not a bad sign, but it tells you your reach to new people isn't growing yet.
Interactions versus profile activity
Profile activity is a separate metric. For posts, Instagram defines it as the actions people take when they visit your profile after engaging with your post. For stories, it covers things like profile visits, follows and website clicks. I've explained it fully in what profile activity means on Instagram.
Why your interactions number goes down
Meta's developer documentation shows how the underlying count works. Its total interactions metric counts likes, saves, comments and shares, minus unlikes, unsaves and deleted comments. So if someone unlikes a post or deletes a comment, the number can drop. That's normal, not a glitch.
Meta also notes some insights data can take up to 48 hours to settle, so a number that moves the day after posting is usually catching up.
How to see interactions on your content
You need a public account (personal or professional) to see insights. Then:
- Go to your profile and tap the post, story or reel.
- Tap View insights.
- Look for the Interactions section and tap it for the breakdown.
Insights for posts and reels stay available for up to two years. Stories disappear after 24 hours, but Instagram keeps their insights for up to two years after they're created; you'll find past stories under View insights on your profile, below Top content based on engagement.
Which interactions matter most
All interactions count, but they don't all mean the same thing. A like is quick. A save means someone wants to come back. A share puts your content in front of new people. A comment starts a conversation. When I review an account, I look at saves and shares first, because they're the actions that tend to bring new eyes.
| Interaction | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Likes | People enjoyed it in the moment |
| Comments | It started a conversation |
| Saves | It's useful enough to keep |
| Shares | Someone thought a friend should see it |
Interactions on reels
Reels have their own set of insights. Instagram lists views (the number of times your reel starts to play or replay), watch time (total time played, including replays), viewers (unique accounts that saw it on screen at least once, which Instagram marks as estimated and in development), average watch time, and follows from the reel. Interactions on a reel sit alongside those numbers. A reel with lots of views but few interactions usually caught attention without giving people a reason to act, so add a clear question or a save-worthy tip next time.
Reels insights are available for reels posted on or after May 14, 2021, and for up to two years after publishing. If an older reel shows nothing, that's why.

Boosted content and interactions
Instagram shows insights for organic and boosted posts, stories and reels. If you boosted something, the interactions include activity from the boost, so compare boosted content with boosted content and organic with organic. Otherwise a paid post will always look like your best work.
A simple way to track interactions month to month
Pick your last ten posts, write down interactions for each, and note the format: carousel, single photo, reel. Do the same next month. You're not chasing a target number, because Instagram doesn't publish one; you're looking for the format and topic that consistently earns more actions than the rest.
Interactions and reach work together
Interactions only tell you half the story. If you want the other half, here's the difference between accounts reached and impressions on Instagram. If you'd rather use a dashboard than tap through each post, my comparison of Instagram analytics tools shows the options.
My take
Use interactions to compare your own posts against each other, not against other accounts. Look for patterns: which formats get saved, which get shared, which get comments. Then make more of whatever gets saved and shared, because those are the posts doing the hard work of growing your account.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an interaction on an Instagram post?
Instagram counts likes, comments, saves and shares as interactions on posts.
What counts as an interaction on an Instagram story?
Instagram counts replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement on stories.
What's the difference between interactions and accounts engaged?
Interactions counts actions. Accounts engaged counts the unique accounts that took those actions.
Why did my Instagram interactions go down?
Meta's total interactions count subtracts unlikes, unsaves and deleted comments, so the number can fall when people undo an action.
Do interactions include people who saw my post but did nothing?
No. Interactions only count actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares. People who just looked are counted in views and viewers.
Can I see interactions on a private Instagram account?
No. Instagram says you need a public personal or professional account to view insights.
