How to Make Your TikTok Account Private (and What Still Shows)

To make your TikTok account private, tap Profile, tap the Menu button, tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy, and turn on Private account. Once it's on, you approve every new follower, and as of October 2026 only the people you approve can watch your videos, LIVE videos, bio and likes or see your followers and following lists.

The catch: your name and photo never go private

A private account hides a lot, but not everything. TikTok's help centre says your name, username and profile photo are always visible to anyone on or off TikTok, and other people can still search for your account. So going private stops strangers seeing what you post. It doesn't make you invisible.

It also switches off more than people expect. Once you're private, nobody can Duet, Stitch, create stickers with or download your posts, and they can't add your posts to their Stories either. If you've built your reach on people reusing your videos, all of that stops the moment you flip the switch.

The public column reaches further than the app. TikTok says that on a public account, depending on your settings, your posts may be seen and shared by anyone on or off TikTok, whether or not they have an account, and your content may appear in search engines, blogs, social media posts and news sites.

How to switch your TikTok account to private

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top.
  3. Tap Settings and privacy, then tap Privacy.
  4. Turn Private account on.

The same switch turns it off again if you change your mind. Going private doesn't remove anyone who already follows you, so if there are people you'd rather lose, this guide on removing followers on TikTok covers that step.

Post by post privacy works on any account

You don't have to lock the whole account to keep one video close. TikTok lets you set privacy on each post, whether your account is private or public.

Your accountWho can view a single post
PublicEveryone (people on or off TikTok), Friends (followers you follow back) or Only you
PrivateFollowers, Friends (followers you follow back) or Only you

To change an existing post

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom and go to the post you'd like to update.
  2. Tap the More options button on the side of the post.
  3. Tap Privacy settings at the bottom. You may need to swipe left.
  4. Choose who can view your post.

For a new post, tap the Settings button at the top of the preview screen and choose who can view it, or manage it from the Post screen; if you've taken a photo, tap the post settings at the bottom. For an existing Story, open it from your Following feed, inbox or profile, tap the Share button, tap Settings and choose your audience.

Two details are worth knowing. The view count on a post doesn't reset when you change its privacy, so going private won't wipe your numbers. And depending on your age and location, your post privacy may be set to Only you by default and can't be changed until you reach a certain age.

TikTok can still suggest a private account

Going private doesn't stop TikTok recommending you as someone to follow. Its help centre says that if your account is private and your suggestion settings are on, TikTok will still suggest that others follow you, but only people you approve can follow you and watch your videos. To change that, go to Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Privacy, then Suggest your account to others.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

So a request from a stranger doesn't mean your privacy's broken. It means TikTok suggested you, and the approval is still yours to give or refuse.

The other privacy settings worth checking

A private account limits who sees your posts. TikTok's privacy settings also let you choose who can comment on your videos, who can send you direct messages and whether your account is suggested to others. Two lists people often ask about next are followers and likes: here's how to hide your followers list, and whether people can see the videos you've liked.

My verdict on going private

I'd go private if TikTok is for friends and family and you'd rather not have strangers watching or reusing your videos. I'd stay public if you want to grow, sell or be found, because private accounts can't be Duetted, Stitched, downloaded or added to anyone's Story. If it's only one or two videos you're worried about, set those posts to Friends or Only you and keep the rest public. Either way, remember your name, username and photo are always on show.

Frequently asked questions

Can people still find my TikTok account if it's private?

Yes. People can still search for your account, and your name, username and profile photo stay visible to anyone on or off TikTok.

Can people Duet or Stitch a private TikTok account?

No. On a private account nobody can Duet, Stitch, create stickers with or download your posts, or add them to their Stories.

Does changing a post's privacy reset its views?

No. TikTok says the view count reflects all views to date and doesn't reset when you change the privacy settings.

Will TikTok still suggest my private account to people?

It can, if your suggestion settings are on, but only people you approve can follow you and watch your videos.
