What Does Friends Mean on TikTok?

On TikTok, friends means followers you follow back. If you follow someone and they follow you, you're friends. That matters in two places: the Friends tab, a feed built around friends and accounts you follow, and the Friends privacy option, which shows a post only to followers you follow back.

TikTok uses three words that sound alike: followers, following and friends. They aren't interchangeable, and mixing them up is how people end up sharing a post more widely than they meant to. TikTok's own Help Center defines friends the same way every time, so let's start there.

Followers, following and friends compared

WordWhat it means on TikTok
FollowersPeople who follow you
FollowingAccounts you follow
FriendsFollowers you follow back

So a friend on TikTok is a mutual follow. Someone who follows you but whom you don't follow back is a follower, not a friend. Someone you follow who doesn't follow you back is in your following list, not your friends.

What the Friends tab shows

TikTok describes the Friends Tab as a feed that features content from friends (followers you follow back), accounts you follow, and people you may know through suggested accounts, in select regions. So it isn't only mutual follows; it can include accounts you follow and suggestions too.

TikTok also notes that some people see Discover in place of the Friends Tab. If your app shows Discover where you expected Friends, that's TikTok's own variation, not a fault on your phone.

What Friends-only means for your posts

This is the setting that matters most. TikTok lets you choose who can view each post:

Your accountOptions for each post
PublicEveryone (people on or off TikTok), Friends, or Only you
PrivateFollowers, Friends, or Only you

Choosing Friends means only followers you follow back can see that post. It's a handy middle ground when you want to share something with people you know without making it public. TikTok also says the view count on a post reflects all views to date and doesn't reset if you change its privacy later, so a post that went out to Everyone keeps its views even after you narrow it to Friends.

How to set a post to Friends

  1. Create your post or story.
  2. On the post screen, tap the privacy setting (or the Settings button on the preview screen).
  3. Choose Friends.

To change an existing post, go to it on your profile, tap More options, tap Privacy settings (you may need to swipe left) and choose who can view it.

How to find more friends on TikTok

TikTok suggests using the For You feed to find people with similar interests, and inviting friends from other platforms. It can also suggest accounts that belong to people in your phone contacts or your Facebook friends, depending on what you choose to share. To connect contacts:

  1. Tap Profile, then the Menu button.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy.
  3. Tap Sync contacts and Facebook friends and turn on the options you want.

You can turn syncing off or remove previously synced contacts at any time.

How to follow, unfollow and see suggestions

To follow someone, open their profile and tap Follow. To see suggested accounts, tap Inbox and then Activities, or go to your profile, tap Add friends and open the Suggested tab. To unfollow, go to their profile and tap the Following button; here's my full guide on how to unfollow someone on TikTok.

Unfollowing someone who follows you turns a friend back into a follower, which also removes them from anything you've set to Friends.

Friends and sharing

When you send a TikTok to someone on another platform, TikTok says it also sends that post to them on TikTok, provided they tap the shared link and allow direct messages from others. Reposting is different again: it shares a video with your followers, credited to the creator. Here's how to repost on TikTok if you want people you follow to see something without making it your own post.

Friends on private accounts

On a private account, every follower has already been approved by you, so the choice between Followers and Friends is about how close the circle is. Followers means everyone you've approved. Friends narrows that to approved followers you also follow back. If you've approved people you don't follow, such as old classmates or colleagues, Friends keeps a post away from them.

Common mix-ups

  • Thinking Friends means people you know in real life. On TikTok it only means a mutual follow.
  • Assuming the Friends tab only shows mutual follows. TikTok says it also features accounts you follow and suggested accounts in select regions.
  • Expecting views to reset after narrowing a post to Friends. TikTok says the view count reflects all views to date and doesn't reset.
  • Forgetting that unfollowing changes friendships. Unfollow someone who follows you and they become a follower again.

Why friends matters for growth

Friends-only posts won't grow your account, because by definition they only reach people who already follow you and whom you follow back. If you're posting for reach, use Everyone and save Friends for personal moments. And keep your expectations grounded on numbers; I've written about how many views counts as viral on TikTok.

My take

Think of friends as mutual follows and everything about TikTok's Friends features makes sense. Use the Friends post option for anything you'd share with people you know but not the world, and check the setting before you post, because the default on a public account is Everyone.
