TikTok Promote is the advertising tool inside the TikTok app that shows one of your public posts to more people, usually as an ad. As of October 2026 you need to be 18 or over, have a creator or Business Account and use sound that's cleared for commercial use, and TikTok says the results it estimates for you aren't guaranteed.
The catch: Promote buys visibility, not a promised result
TikTok is plain about this. The results shown for each promotion pack are estimates based on past performance, and TikTok says it can't guarantee you'll get a specific number of views, clicks or other results, because many factors affect how a promotion performs.
It also says Promote only improves your content's visibility on TikTok. Whether people stop, watch and follow still comes down to the post itself, and TikTok sends creators to its Creator Academy for that side of things. So I'd only promote a post that's already landing with the people who see it naturally. Paying to push a weak post just shows a weak post to more people.

Who can use TikTok Promote
| Requirement | What TikTok's help centre says |
|---|---|
| Age | At least 18 years old |
| Account | A creator, or a Business Account |
| Not eligible | Government, Politician and Political Party Accounts (GPPPAs) |
| Content | Public posts only |
| Sound | Original sound, or sounds that can be used for commercial purposes |
| Formats | Short and long videos and photo mode posts, but not Stories |
| Terms | Agree to the Promote Terms of Service and acknowledge the Privacy Policy |
The sound rule is the one that catches people. If your background sound isn't allowed for commercial use and isn't a sound you fully own, Promote may ask you to change it before you can start or continue a campaign. TikTok points you to its Commercial Music Library for cleared sounds, and my guide to the TikTok Commercial Music Library explains how that library works.

How to set up a Promote campaign
There are four ways into Promote, so start from whichever is closest:
- From your profile: tap Profile at the bottom, tap the Menu button at the top, then select TikTok Studio or Business suite. You need a Business Account to reach Business suite.
- From your post: tap the More options button on the post.
- From LIVE: tap the Add post button at the bottom, then tap LIVE. You can also tap Share at the bottom during your LIVE.
- From someone else's post or LIVE: tap Share. This lets you promote another creator's content, though TikTok says it may not be available for every post or LIVE video.
- Tap Promote.
- Choose a promotion goal. Depending on the goal, you may have extra steps to follow.
- Select a promotion pack, or choose a custom one and adjust the promotion details.
- Tap Pay. TikTok notifies you once your post is approved.
Your promotion usually starts after the campaign is approved and ends when the duration you chose is over. A promoted post can be rejected if it breaks the Community Guidelines or ads policy, and TikTok tells you the status either way. You can also promote the same post more than once through the Promote again option.
Promotion packs or a custom promotion
A promotion pack is the quick route. Each pack comes with a suggested budget and an estimated result, both based on past performance, so you don't have to set every detail yourself. You don't have to use one, though. A custom promotion lets you set your own duration, budget and audience based on your goal.
- Audience: with a custom promotion you can pick your own audience, or keep the default one Promote suggests.
- Interest tags: options can include household products, apps, life services, education, pets, food and drinks, clothing and accessories, beauty and personal care, sports and outdoors, travel, games, business services and financial services. They vary by region and change over time.
- Other countries: cross-country geo-targeting is rolled out gradually and depends on your account, your country and the ad goal you pick. You can check whether you have it in the create flow.
The total cost depends on the duration and budget you set, and TikTok says it may change over time with factors such as market demand. It's shown in your local currency or in rechargeable Coins.
Paying, refunds and the app store fee
- Coins, Apple Pay or Google Pay: you may see an extra service fee set by Apple or Google, typically around 30%, plus any taxes that apply in your region. Those providers and local tax rules set the exact figure, so it can change.
- Ending early: you can end a promotion at any time from the Promote order details page. The remaining budget goes back to your Promote balance for future promotions.
- Coupons: once a campaign starts running, any coupon used on that order counts as used and won't come back, even if you close the order early.
- Deleting the post: you can't delete a post while its promotion is active.
- Invoices: TikTok doesn't support custom invoices or other types such as special tax invoices, and it can't edit invoice details once they're issued.
- No balance showing: you won't see a Promote balance until you've completed a Promote order.
That service fee is the line I'd read twice. It's added on top, so check the total on screen before you tap Pay with Coins or an app store wallet.

Reading your Promote dashboard
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu button at the top, then select TikTok Studio or Business suite.
- Tap Promote.
- Tap Dashboard.
The dashboard is there while the campaign runs and after it ends. It tracks engagement data (post and profile views, new followers, likes, comments, clicks to your website and more), audience insights such as gender, age and regions, the post status (pending review, active, paused or rejected), how long the promotion runs and what you spent. TikTok adds that results vary with the content type and the objective you set, based on historical data. If you outgrow the app, Promote can be integrated with TikTok Ads Manager, which TikTok covers on its Business Help Center.
When the Promote button goes grey or vanishes
If the Promote icon turns grey, tap it to see the details in a notification. If it's disappeared completely, TikTok asks you to submit feedback with screenshots of the issue. If you meet the requirements but still can't place an order, check your internet connection, then close and reopen the app and try again. To send feedback in the app, tap Need more help? at the bottom and follow the steps to submit a ticket.
My verdict on TikTok Promote
I'd use Promote to give a post that's already working a push towards a clear goal, like profile views or website clicks. I'd skip it for a post that's flopping, because TikTok itself says Promote only adds visibility. Check your sound is cleared before you start, check the total if you're paying through Coins, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and remember the post can't be deleted until the promotion ends.
Promote is one piece of a wider plan. TikTok's own growth advice still comes back to engaging with viewers in comments and LIVE, posting good content regularly, trying content longer than one minute and collaborating with similar creators through Duet, Stitch and LIVE. My guide on promoting your business on TikTok covers the rest of that plan.
Frequently asked questions
Are TikTok Promote results guaranteed?
No. TikTok says the results for each promotion pack are estimates based on past performance, and it can't guarantee a specific number of views, clicks or other results.
Can I promote a TikTok Story?
No. As of October 2026 Promote works on short and long videos and photo mode posts, but it isn't available for Stories.
Can I stop a Promote campaign early?
Yes. End it from the Promote order details page and the remaining budget returns to your Promote balance. A coupon used on that order won't be returned.
Why is there an extra fee when I pay with Coins?
When you pay with Coins, Apple Pay or Google Pay, Apple or Google may add a service fee, typically around 30%, plus any local taxes.
