The only reliable way to hide your followers list on TikTok is to make your account private. TikTok says that when your account is private, only people you approve can see your posts, bio, likes and both your followers and following lists. Your name, username and profile photo stay visible to everyone.
Many people search for a single 'hide followers' switch. On a public account there isn't one for your followers list. What you can usually control on its own is your following list, the accounts you follow, and I'll show you both below.
What each setting hides
| Setting | Hides your followers list? | Hides your following list? | Hides your videos? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private account | Yes, from people you haven't approved | Yes | Yes, from non-followers |
| Following list set to only you (where offered) | No | Yes | No |
| Suggest your account to others off | No | No | No, it just limits suggestions |
Here's the part people miss: whatever you choose, TikTok says your nickname, username and profile photo are always visible to anyone, on or off TikTok. So if the goal is to stay unfindable, your username and picture matter as much as the lists.
How to make your TikTok account private
- Tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu (three lines) at the top, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy.
- Turn on Private account.
You can switch back to public at any time. Existing followers stay followers; new people have to request to follow you, and you approve or decline each one.
How to hide only your following list
Many versions of the app have a Following list option inside Settings and privacy, then Privacy. Setting it to only you hides the accounts you follow while your profile stays public. If you don't see it, search your settings for the word following. TikTok changes menu names now and then, and some features roll out to some accounts first.
Why there's no switch for the followers list on a public account
Your followers chose to follow a public profile, so TikTok treats that list as part of your public presence. Private accounts are the exception because you approve each follower. If you're a creator who wants to stay public for reach, this is a trade-off: you can hide who you follow, but not who follows you.
Other ways to keep your account low-key
- Turn off Suggest your account to others. For adults this is on by default. Switching it off reduces how often TikTok recommends you to contacts and mutual connections.
- Limit who can comment, Duet and Stitch. These are in the same Privacy menu.
- Change your username if people find you through it.
- Review your followers and remove anyone you don't recognise from your followers list.

For teens and parents
TikTok sets accounts for people aged 13 to 17 to private by default. Teens can change this in their privacy settings, but some features, such as video downloads and direct messages, stay limited for younger teens whatever they choose. If you're a parent, the quickest check is to open the Privacy menu together and confirm the account is still private.
Can you see someone's hidden followers?
No, and I'd steer clear of any app or site that claims it can. They don't have special access to TikTok, and many ask you to log in, which puts your own account at risk. If someone keeps their lists private, that's their choice to make. If you're curious about who looks at your own profile, TikTok has an official feature for that, explained in how to see who viewed your TikTok profile.
Private account trade-offs to know
Going private does more than hide your lists. TikTok says that on a private account, other people can't Duet or Stitch your videos, make stickers from them, download your posts or add them to their Stories. For a personal account that's often exactly what you want. For a creator trying to grow, it's a real cost, because Duets and Stitches are how many videos travel beyond your own followers.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Your videos also stop appearing to people who don't follow you, which means far fewer new viewers. If growth matters, I'd rather stay public and use the smaller controls than go private and stall.
Removing a follower you don't want
Hiding your list doesn't remove anyone from it. If there's a particular person you'd rather didn't follow you, open your followers list, tap the three dots next to their name and choose to remove them. They aren't told directly, though they may notice. If they're bothering you, blocking is the stronger option, and our guide on blocking someone on TikTok and what they see explains what changes on their side.
Checking what others see
After changing your settings, look at your profile the way a stranger would. The easiest way is to log out and search for your username in a browser, or ask a friend who doesn't follow you to check. You should see your name, username and photo, and on a private account, a message saying the account is private instead of your videos. If you can still see your following list from their side, the setting didn't save, so go back and toggle it again. A quick check now saves an awkward surprise later, especially if you've made the change for safety reasons.
My advice
Decide what you're hiding from. If it's strangers, a private account does the job in one tap. If you're a creator who needs reach, stay public, hide your following list where the option exists, and turn off account suggestions. That's the balance I'd pick for most small business owners.
