How to Find a WhatsApp ID

The short version: a WhatsApp ID is usually just the phone number in international format with no plus sign or spaces, followed by @s.whatsapp.net for individuals or @g.us for groups, and you find it through the app settings, a business API dashboard, or a bit of digging if someone sent you a message first. There is no public WhatsApp "username" search the way there is on Instagram or X, and that's the bit most guides gloss over.

What a WhatsApp ID is

People use "WhatsApp ID" to mean three different things and that mixing up causes most of the confusion. There's the plain phone number people quote you ("here's my WhatsApp ID, +44 7700 900000"). There's the technical JID format used in the WhatsApp Business API, which looks like [email protected]. And there's the internal numeric user ID that shows up in API responses and webhook logs, something like 447700900000:[email protected] when there are multiple linked devices.

WhatsApp doesn't run on usernames. There's no @handle you can search like on Instagram, no public directory, no "find people near me" feature. Every single ID traces back to a phone number. That's the uncomfortable bit a lot of how-to articles skip because it makes the topic less exciting to write about, but it's the whole truth of it: if you don't have the number, you don't have the ID, full stop.

Finding your own WhatsApp ID

If you just want your own ID for a business integration or a form, it's quick.

  • Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap your profile name at the top.
  • Your phone number is shown there in local format. Convert it to international format by replacing the leading zero with your country code (UK numbers go from 07700 900000 to 447700900000).
  • Strip the plus sign and any spaces or dashes. That string is your personal WhatsApp ID for most integration purposes.
  • If you're setting up WhatsApp Business through Meta's API, your actual JID ([email protected]) will appear automatically in your Meta Business Suite or your provider's dashboard once the number is verified.

If you're running the Business app rather than the API, you won't see a formal JID anywhere in the interface, because the consumer-facing Business app doesn't expose it. You'd need the Cloud API or a third-party platform like Twilio or 360dialog for that level of technical access.

Finding someone else's WhatsApp ID

This is where most people land on this search, and the honest answer depends entirely on your relationship to that person.

If they've messaged you already: open the chat, tap their name at the top, and their number is right there in the contact info. That's your ID, same conversion rules as above.

If you only have their saved contact: check your phone's contacts app for the number they're stored under, then format it the same way.

If you have no existing connection: this is where I'll be blunt. There is no legitimate tool, website, or app that lets you type in a name and pull out a stranger's WhatsApp ID. Anything claiming to do that is either a scraper violating WhatsApp's terms, a scam harvesting your own data, or simply broken. I've seen enough "WhatsApp finder" sites over the years doing the AI and marketing work I do to know they're built to collect your email address and sell you nothing. If someone pitches you a tool that finds WhatsApp IDs from a name alone, walk away from it.

A worked example: building a customer contact list the right way

Say you run a small online furniture shop and you want to message 200 customers who bought from you in the last year to tell them about a sale. You don't have their WhatsApp IDs, only the phone numbers from your order database.

  1. Export the customer phone numbers from your ecommerce platform, usually Shopify or WooCommerce, as a CSV.
  2. Clean the formatting in a spreadsheet, using a formula to strip the leading zero and prepend the country code, so 07700900000 becomes 447700900000.
  3. Upload that list into your WhatsApp Business API provider, which will automatically generate the full JID for each contact ([email protected]) once it confirms the number is active on WhatsApp.
  4. Run a number-verification check first, because typically 5 to 10 percent of stored customer numbers are outdated, have typos, or were never on WhatsApp at all, and you don't want to waste a template message send on those.
  5. Only message people who gave you consent to contact them, because WhatsApp's commerce policy and most countries' data protection rules both require an opt-in before you send marketing messages.

That's the realistic, compliant version of "finding" a batch of WhatsApp IDs. It's a data-cleaning job, not a lookup trick.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Groups work a little differently

Group IDs follow the same JID logic but end in @g.us instead, and you can't find them without being a member or admin of the group. If you're trying to find and join a business WhatsApp group link safely, the invite link itself contains an encoded group ID, which is a different animal from the numeric ID of a person. Never pay for access to a "group ID database," because group IDs change whenever an admin resets the invite link, and anything you buy will be stale within days.

Where this matters for business setup

Knowing your own WhatsApp ID and understanding the format matters most when you're setting up automation, chatbots, or bulk messaging through the official API. I get this question a lot from small business owners who've found the WhatsApp Business app on iPhone, started using it, and then hit a wall when they try to connect it to a CRM or automation tool that asks for a "WhatsApp ID" field. At that point you typically need to move from the free Business app up to the paid Cloud API, which does the ID formatting for you, or bring in someone who's done the setup before. If you're at that stage and want a clear look at what the migration and ongoing cost looks like, it's worth reading up on what an AI consultant costs before you commit to a platform, because a lot of providers quote per-conversation pricing that's easy to misjudge at volume.

Privacy and traceability, briefly

People searching "how to find a WhatsApp ID" are sometimes really asking whether someone can trace them through it, which is a fair worry. The short answer is that a WhatsApp ID on its own doesn't reveal location or identity beyond what's tied to the phone number itself. I've written a longer piece on whether WhatsApp can be traced if that's the angle you're working from, and it's worth a read before you assume either too much privacy or too little.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a saved contact name as the ID. WhatsApp doesn't care what you've named someone, only the underlying number matters.
  • Forgetting the country code when formatting numbers for an API upload, which causes a huge chunk of failed message sends in bulk campaigns.
  • Paying for "WhatsApp ID finder" software or browser extensions, almost all of which breach WhatsApp's terms of service and can get your business account banned.
  • Assuming a business account has a different ID format to a personal one. It doesn't, the number-based structure is identical, only the verification badge differs.

And one more worth saying plainly: if your plan involves finding WhatsApp IDs for people who haven't given you their number or their consent, stop and rethink the plan, because that's the exact behaviour WhatsApp's enforcement team actively bans accounts for, regardless of how official your intentions are.

Frequently asked questions

Is a WhatsApp ID the same as a phone number?

Yes, functionally. The ID is the phone number in international format without the plus sign, sometimes with @s.whatsapp.net appended for technical use in the API. There's no separate username system.

Can I find someone's WhatsApp ID using just their name?

No, not legitimately. WhatsApp has no public search by name. Any tool claiming to do this is either a scam or breaching WhatsApp's terms, and I'd avoid it entirely.

How do I find my own WhatsApp ID for a business integration?

Open Settings in the app, tap your profile, note your phone number, convert it to international format without the plus sign, and that's your ID for most purposes. The full JID format appears automatically once you connect through the official Cloud API.

Does a WhatsApp group have an ID too?

Yes, group IDs end in @g.us rather than @s.whatsapp.net, and you can only see one if you're a member or admin. They reset whenever the invite link is regenerated, so there's no point buying or storing them long term.
