How to Find Your Number on WhatsApp (iPhone and Android)

To find your number on WhatsApp, open WhatsApp Settings and tap your profile photo or name at the top. Your profile shows the phone number your account is registered with. On an iPhone you can also tap your profile picture straight from the Settings tab, and on Android you get there through More options, then Settings.

It sounds like a small question, but it matters more than you'd think. The number WhatsApp shows here is the one your account, your backups and your contacts are tied to, and it isn't always the number in your phone today.

Below are the steps for both phones, how to share your number without typing it out, why the number might look wrong, and the new username option for people who'd rather not give their number out at all. It's all from WhatsApp's Help Center, read in October 2026.

How to find your number on WhatsApp on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings, or tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap your name or profile photo at the top.
  4. Your registered phone number is shown on your profile screen.

WhatsApp's own change number guide uses exactly this route, telling you that you can find your registered phone number by opening WhatsApp Settings or your profile.

How to find your number on WhatsApp on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options, the three dots in the top right.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap your profile photo at the top to see your registered number.

WhatsApp's troubleshooting page describes the same check: go to WhatsApp Settings, then tap your profile photo, to see what phone number is registered.

Share your number without typing it: use your QR code

If you want someone to add you, you don't need to read your number out. WhatsApp gives every account a QR code.

PhoneSteps to share your QR code
iPhoneTap Settings or your profile picture, tap the QR Code next to your name, tap share, then pick an app
AndroidTap More options, then Settings, tap the QR Code next to your name, tap share, then pick a contact or app

On Android you can also crop the image, add text, stickers or a caption before sending. WhatsApp warns you to share your code only with people you trust, because someone can forward it and anyone who scans it can add you. If you're on the receiving end, my guide on scanning a WhatsApp QR code walks through it.

Why the number on WhatsApp isn't your current number

This catches out a lot of people who've changed SIM. WhatsApp is tied to the number you registered with, not whatever SIM is in the phone. Its Help Center says that if you changed your SIM or number but you're still using the account on your old number, you have to use the Change Number feature to move it.

Skip that, and WhatsApp's warning is blunt: if you then lose access to the old SIM or number, you'll permanently lose access to your WhatsApp account and have to start a new one. So if your profile shows an old number, sort it now while you still have that old number. My guide on changing your number on WhatsApp covers each step.

Keep your number private with a WhatsApp username

WhatsApp is rolling out usernames gradually, so you may not have them yet. A username is a unique handle, for example @Name123, that you can give people instead of your number.

  • People who don't have your number saved see your username instead, in chats, groups and calls.
  • People who already have your number saved still see it.
  • There's no searchable directory, so someone needs your exact username to message you.
  • You can add an optional username key, which people must enter before they can message you for the first time.
  • A phone number is still required for your account.

For a business owner who chats with customers, that's a tidy way to keep your personal number out of new conversations. WhatsApp also notes that when you message someone new, it may show them which country your number is registered in, to help them spot scams. If you're wondering whether you can skip the number entirely, my guide to using WhatsApp without a phone number explains what works.

When you'll need your WhatsApp number to hand

  • Changing number: WhatsApp asks for your old number and your new one, both in full international format, so copy it exactly as your profile shows it.
  • Moving to a new phone: you register with the same number to restore a backup, because backups only restore on the number they were made with.
  • Giving it to customers: for a business card or website, a QR code or a username saves people typing it wrong.

Who can see your number on WhatsApp

Anyone you message who has your number saved sees it. With a username set up, people who don't have your number saved see your username instead. If you're in a group, the same rule applies: without a username, other members can see the number you're using.

My verdict

Finding your number on WhatsApp takes three taps: Settings, then your profile photo, and it's there. The more useful habit is checking that number matches the SIM you use today, because an old number on your profile is the start of a lost account. And if you'd rather not hand your number to everyone, keep an eye out for usernames arriving on your phone.
