Broad Shoulders? Here's How to Dress Them Like a Feature, Not a Flaw

The short version: Broad shoulders on women are a strong, striking feature that most styling advice gets wrong by telling you to hide them. The right approach is to balance your silhouette, draw the eye where you want it, and wear your shoulders with confidence rather than apology.

Why most style advice for broad-shouldered women is rubbish

I have broad shoulders. Always have. At 5'4" with a swimmer's frame I inherited from nobody in my family, I spent about twenty years trying to shrink the top half of my body with cold-shoulder tops and boxy cardigans. Spoiler: it didn't work. It just made me look like I was hiding something.

Most of the advice out there still tells broad-shouldered women to "minimise" or "soften" their upper body. I find that insulting, honestly. You are not a problem to be solved. You have a silhouette that models, athletes, and fashion designers spend serious money trying to achieve. The goal is not to make your shoulders disappear. The goal is to dress your actual body in a way that looks intentional and feels brilliant.

First, understand what "broad shoulders" means in proportion terms

Broad shoulders in women typically means your shoulder width is noticeably wider than your hips. This is sometimes called an inverted triangle body shape. Some women also have broad shoulders with a relatively balanced hip-to-shoulder ratio, which gives more of an athletic or rectangular silhouette.

These two situations call for slightly different approaches:

  • Inverted triangle: You want to add visual volume to your hips and lower half to balance the silhouette.
  • Athletic or rectangular frame: You have more freedom to wear fitted pieces top to bottom because your proportions are already balanced.

Knowing which one you are saves you hours of trying on things in changing rooms and wondering why something that "should" work doesn't.

What works: the honest list

V-necks and deep scoop necks

A V-neck draws the eye inward and downward, which naturally de-emphasises shoulder width. This is not about hiding anything. It's about creating a vertical line through the body, which is flattering on almost every frame. Deep V-necks, wrap tops, and wrap dresses are your best friends.

Full skirts and wide-leg trousers

If you have an inverted triangle frame, adding volume below the waist is the single most effective thing you can do. A midi-length full skirt, an A-line dress, or wide-leg trousers in a substantial fabric will visually widen your hips to match your shoulders. Brands like Cos, Arket, and Reiss do wide-leg trousers cut well enough to hold their shape without going limp.

Belted waists

A defined waist between broad shoulders and fuller hips or a skirt creates an hourglass effect that is striking rather than boxy. Even if your waist isn't particularly small, cinching it draws the eye to the middle third of your body, which rebalances everything. A wide belt over a wrap dress is one of the most effective combinations for this frame.

Halter necks and thin straps

Counter-intuitive, I know. But a halter neck or thin spaghetti strap exposes the shoulder rather than adding bulk to it, which makes it feel deliberate and elegant rather than trying-too-hard. Voluminous sleeves add width. Bare or minimal straps do not. Keep the shoulder line clean.

Boat necks worn strategically

The boat neck has a reputation for widening shoulders, and it does if worn with nothing below to balance it. Pair a boat neck top with wide-leg trousers or a full skirt and it looks editorial and intentional. Wear it with skinny jeans and you'll feel like a triangle on legs.

What to skip, or at least approach carefully

Shoulder pads (mostly)

If your shoulders are already broad, adding more shoulder is usually not the move. The major exception is if a jacket with light padding gives you a sharp, defined line that makes the shoulder feel architectural rather than soft. Sharp tailoring can work. Squishy foam pads from a 1980s revival blazer? Probably not.

Cap sleeves

Cap sleeves end right at the widest point of your shoulder and add a horizontal cut-off line directly there. This emphasises width rather than working with it. Go sleeveless or go to a full sleeve length. The in-between is almost never worth it.

Horizontal stripes across the chest and shoulders

Breton stripes lower down on the body are fine. Thick horizontal stripes that sit across the chest and shoulder line are not doing you any favours. Vertical stripes, diagonal prints, and any kind of print that pulls the eye inward or downward are much better options.

Off-the-shoulder tops (with caveats)

Off-the-shoulder tops sit along the exact width line of your shoulders and often have a horizontal ruffle or band that emphasises that line. Some broad-shouldered women love them and wear them brilliantly. If they make you feel self-conscious, this is probably why, and it's a rational response rather than a confidence issue.

The piece of advice nobody gives but should

Stop trying to look smaller on top. Seriously. The fashion industry has spent decades telling women with broad shoulders to shrink and those with narrow shoulders to pad out. The reality is that a strong shoulder line is one of the most commanding silhouettes in fashion. Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and Serena Williams all have broad shoulders and none of them have spent their careers hiding.

When I stopped trying to minimise my shoulders and started dressing for balance and intention instead, I started receiving compliments on my shape for the first time in my adult life. The shift was not in my body. It was in what I chose to put on it and the attitude I brought to it.

Specific brands and where to shop in the UK

A few places that consistently cut clothes well for broader shoulders:

  • Cos: Clean lines, relaxed silhouettes, and a tendency toward architectural shapes that work brilliantly on a strong frame.
  • Reiss: Good tailoring, structured fabrics, wrap dresses cut with real depth in the neckline.
  • & Other Stories: More experimental, and the trousers are cut with enough leg width to balance a broader upper body.
  • Boden: Better than its reputation for broad shoulders, particularly the wrap dresses and midi skirts.
  • ASOS Curve and Tall ranges: Surprisingly good for petite-broad and tall-broad frames specifically because the proportions are mapped differently.

For suiting specifically, if you want a blazer that fits across the back without pulling, look at brands that offer a choice of back width, or go bespoke. Suitsupply does women's tailoring and allows for custom fitting. It costs more but a single well-fitting blazer is worth three that strain across the shoulders.

One mindset shift worth making

A lot of women I work with in my consultancy practice mention their shoulders as something they want to "deal with." I always push back on that framing. Your body is not a problem to solve in a strategy session. The framing you bring to it shapes the choices you make.

Dress for impact. Dress for the version of yourself you want to project in the room. And if broad shoulders are part of that silhouette, dress them with intention rather than apology. That is the whole game.

Frequently asked questions

What necklines are best for broad shoulders on women?

V-necks, deep scoop necks, and wrap-style necklines are the most effective because they draw the eye inward and create a vertical line through the body, which visually narrows the shoulder line without hiding it.

Should broad-shouldered women avoid off-the-shoulder tops?

Not necessarily, but off-the-shoulder styles sit directly along the widest point of the shoulder and often include a horizontal band or ruffle that emphasises that width. If they make you feel self-conscious, that is the likely reason rather than a general lack of confidence.

What bottom half styles balance broad shoulders best?

Full midi skirts, A-line dresses, and wide-leg trousers add visual volume to the lower half of the body, which balances an inverted triangle silhouette. Skinny or straight-cut bottoms can make the contrast between wide shoulders and narrow hips feel more pronounced.

Are cap sleeves bad for broad shoulders?

Cap sleeves end at the widest point of the shoulder and add a horizontal line directly there, which emphasises breadth. Sleeveless styles or full-length sleeves generally work better because they either expose the shoulder cleanly or extend past the widest point without cutting it off mid-line.
