What to Wear When You Have Broad Shoulders (And Why You Should Stop Hiding Them)

The short version: Women with broad shoulders often get told to "balance" their frame by minimising their upper body, but that advice is outdated and frankly dull. The real goal is to dress in a way that makes you feel strong and confident, not smaller. This guide gives you specific cuts, brands, and styling tricks that work in real life.

First, let's kill the myth that broad shoulders need fixing

I have broad shoulders. Swimmers have broad shoulders. Most women who have played any sport seriously have broad shoulders. And for years, every style guide I read told me to wear cold-shoulder tops, flutter sleeves, and wide-leg trousers to "balance my proportions."

I tried it. I looked like I was wearing a costume.

The whole "balance your frame" approach treats your body as a problem that needs solving with optical illusions. It does not work, it is exhausting to think about every morning, and it starts from the wrong place entirely.

Strong shoulders are a feature. Let's dress accordingly.

What happens when you wear the "wrong" thing

Nothing. nothing bad happens. But since we are here to talk about what looks great, let me tell you what I have found through years of trial and error, not what some style textbook says.

There are cuts that feel incredible on a broader shoulder frame. There are some that feel uncomfortable or pull oddly at the seams. Knowing the difference saves money and wardrobe frustration. That is the entire point of this post.

Necklines that work brilliantly

V-necks and deep scoop necks

These draw the eye inward and downward. Not to hide your shoulders, but because they create a longer vertical line that feels elegant rather than boxy. A deep V on a blazer or a dress does a lot of heavy lifting. Brands like Reiss, Arket, and M&S do excellent V-neck knitwear that runs long enough to stay tucked or untucked without looking sloppy.

Boat necks and square necks

Counterintuitive, I know. Most guides say avoid horizontal lines across your shoulders. But a fitted boat neck on a structured top can look absolutely stunning on a broader frame because it is meant to sit there. It is not fighting your shape, it is working with it. Square necks do the same thing. Try ASOS Curve or & Other Stories for both.

Halter necks

These expose the shoulders and collarbones while pulling the visual focus toward the centre front. On broader shoulders, they look confident and intentional. They work especially well in a heavier fabric like satin or jersey so they drape rather than cling.

Tops and jackets: what to look for on the rack

Fit at the shoulder seam is everything. If a jacket's shoulder seam sits even a centimetre too wide or too narrow, the whole thing looks wrong. This is where most high street shopping fails women with broader shoulders, because standard sizing assumes a narrower shoulder width relative to bust size.

My honest recommendation: size up in jackets and blazers, then take them to a tailor to bring in the waist. A basic waist take-in at a UK tailor costs between 15 and 35 pounds and transforms a good jacket into a great one. I have done this with blazers from H&M, Zara, and John Lewis and the results are night and day.

Look for:

  • Structured shoulders that sit exactly on the shoulder bone, not drooping past it
  • Single-breasted cuts rather than double-breasted (double-breasted adds visual bulk across the chest)
  • Longline blazers that hit at the hip or below, which create a vertical line rather than cutting across your widest point
  • Wrap-style tops that tie at the waist, which emphasise the waist rather than the shoulders

Dresses that feel like they were made for you

The silhouettes that consistently work well for broader shoulders are fit-and-flare, wrap, and column/shift styles. Here is why each one works:

Wrap dresses

The diagonal wrap line creates movement and draws attention to the waist. Diane von Furstenberg basically built an empire on this. DVF wraps are expensive but worth it once. Boden and Monsoon both do excellent affordable wrap dresses in fabrics that drape rather than cling.

Column and shift dresses

These let your whole silhouette exist as one long line. No cinching, no fuss. Especially good in a midi or maxi length. COS is exceptional for this, as is Uniqlo for a budget option.

Fit-and-flare

A fitted bodice and flared skirt works because it emphasises both the waist and hips, which naturally brings proportion to a broader upper body. Phase Eight and Ghost in the UK do this really well in occasion wear.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

What I would avoid (and why, not just "the rules say so")

Puffed sleeves sit oddly on broader shoulders because they are designed for narrower frames and they can restrict movement and gap at the shoulder seam. They also add visual width at the exact point where you might not want it. I am not saying never, but I am saying try before you buy.

Heavy embellishment across the shoulders, like sequin epaulettes or oversized ruffles sitting right on the shoulder, can feel like a lot. Again, not a rule, just a practical note from someone who has worn a ruffled shoulder blouse and spent the entire evening feeling like a defensive lineman at a dinner party.

Strapless dresses in a stiff fabric can cut straight across and feel like a shelf. In a soft, draped fabric they are fine. The fabric is doing the work here, not the neckline.

The swimwear and activewear situation

This is where most style guides completely let down women with broader shoulders, because most swimwear is sized for a narrower shoulder-to-hip ratio than many of us have.

Brands worth knowing:

  • Sweaty Betty: their performance wear runs with a wider back and shoulder, which works brilliantly on broader frames
  • Athleta (US-based, ships to UK): specifically designs for athletic builds and offers mix-and-match bikini sizing by top and bottom separately
  • Figleaves: UK-based, excellent range of swimwear with separate top and bottom sizing
  • Boden: their swimwear tends to run with more coverage in the shoulder and back, good for sporty frames

For activewear specifically, buying separate tops in a larger size and having the hem taken in if needed is a completely valid approach. Sports bras from Shock Absorber are cut wider in the back and shoulder than most high street options and are worth every penny.

A note about confidence, because it matters more than any of this

I spent a lot of years trying to dress smaller. Wearing dark tops, avoiding patterns on my upper body, steering clear of anything that might draw attention to the part of me that felt "too much."

It did not make me feel better. It made me feel invisible.

The women I see who look at ease in their clothes are not the ones who have successfully hidden their bodies. They are the ones who have stopped trying to. Serena Williams, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett. All broad-shouldered. None of them dressing to minimise it.

There is no "right" shape. There is just your shape, and clothes that fit it well.

Frequently asked questions

Should women with broad shoulders avoid sleeveless tops?

No. Sleeveless tops and dresses can look brilliant on broader shoulders because they expose the shoulder cleanly without adding fabric bulk. The key is fit at the armhole: it should sit just at the edge of the shoulder, not gaping or pulling.

What is the best neckline for broad shoulders?

V-necks, halter necks, and square necks all work well. V-necks create a vertical line that elongates the upper body. Halter necks draw focus to the collarbone and centre front. Square necks sit naturally across a wider shoulder and feel intentional rather than awkward.

Can women with broad shoulders wear off-the-shoulder tops?

Yes, and many find they look great. Off-the-shoulder styles expose the collarbone and create a soft horizontal line. The fit matters more than the style: if the elastic or seam keeps slipping or sits too tight across the shoulders, the proportions will look off regardless of your frame.

How do I find blazers that fit broad shoulders without looking boxy?

Size up to get the shoulder seam sitting correctly on the shoulder bone, then take the blazer to a tailor for a waist suppression. This costs between 15 and 35 pounds in the UK and is far cheaper than buying multiple blazers hoping one fits. Brands like Reiss, Arket, and Cos cut with slightly more shoulder width than average high street options.
