To cancel Spotify Premium, log in to your account page, choose Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription, and keep going until you see the confirmation message. Premium carries on until your next billing date, then your account switches to free, with your playlists and saved music still there.
Here's the catch: what those steps do depends on who you are. As of October 2026, cancelling during a zero-priced free trial ends Premium straight away, and that trial can't be reactivated. A Family or Duo manager who cancels takes every member off Premium, while a member who follows the same steps only leaves. And if there's no cancel option at all, you're probably billed by a partner, not Spotify. This guide follows Spotify's US help pages, so other countries may see different options.
What cancelling does for you
Find your row before you press anything:
| Who you are | What the cancel steps do |
|---|---|
| Individual or Student | Premium runs to the next billing date, then free |
| On a free trial | Free straight away, and the trial can't be reactivated |
| Family or Duo manager | Plan ends; every member loses Premium from the next payment date |
| Family or Duo member | You leave the plan; the plan itself carries on |
| Billed by a partner (phone or internet provider) | No cancel option on Spotify; cancel with the partner |
How to cancel, step by step
- Log in to your Spotify account page.
- Choose Manage your plan.
- Choose Cancel subscription and continue until you reach the confirmation message.
- Check the account page: you should see the date your account switches to free.
Spotify also says you can cancel by completing a form and sending it to Spotify, if the account page route doesn't suit you.
If you manage a Family or Duo plan
Following the same steps cancels the whole plan, and every member loses Premium from the next payment date, so tell them first. Any managed accounts for young listeners move to free. If you're a member, not the manager, the steps only remove you. To end the plan itself, the manager has to cancel or change the payment method.
No cancel button? Check who bills you
If your account page has no option to change your plan, your Premium is billed through a partner company, such as a phone or internet provider. Look under Payment on the account page for the partner's contact link and cancel with them. Spotify can't refund Premium payments made through a partner, so that conversation happens with the partner too.
And if your account page says Spotify free, there's nothing to cancel and no payment details on that account. A charge you're seeing probably belongs to Premium on a different Spotify account, so try logging in with your other email addresses or login details.
Cancelled but still charged?
Open Payment under Your plan on the account page and read the date:
- A date for your next payment means the cancel didn't complete. Repeat the steps until you see the confirmation message.
- A date when the account switches to free means the cancel worked. You probably cancelled just after the payment went through, and you won't be charged again.
On a free trial, a small charge can show up when you add your card. It's an authorization charge to verify the card, a temporary hold, not a payment. Spotify also says you aren't eligible for a free trial if you've had one before, bought Premium before, or been in Premium Family or Duo.
Refunds: what Spotify will and won't do
Spotify's policy is that you can cancel any time and keep what you paid for until the end of the billing period. It can't refund gift cards bought in a store, or Premium paid through a partner.
Audiobooks are the exception. A refund may be possible if you paid within the last 7 days, if the audiobook was removed for policy violations, or for a top-up you haven't used.

Want a different billing date?
You can't change your billing date directly. The workaround is to cancel, wait for the plan to switch to free on your next billing date, then subscribe again on the day you want. If you manage Duo or Family, your members have to be invited again afterwards.
Before you cancel: switching plans or deleting
If what you want is a different plan, Individual and Student managers can use Change plan instead, and you keep your playlists, saved music and settings whichever plan you move to. Compare the options with this rundown of Spotify Premium plans.
Cancelling and deleting aren't the same job. Cancelling keeps your account on free; deleting removes it. If you want the account gone, here's how to delete your Spotify account, and if you're leaving for good, my list of Spotify alternatives is a good place to start.
My verdict
Cancel a few days before your billing date, not on the day, and don't stop at the first screen: you're only done when the account page shows the date you switch to free. If you're on a free trial you want to keep, don't cancel early, because it ends at once. And if you run a Family or Duo plan, message your members before you cancel. It's their Premium too.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cancel Spotify Premium?
Log in to your account page, choose Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription, and continue until you see the confirmation message. Premium lasts until your next billing date, then the account switches to free.
Do I lose my playlists if I cancel Spotify Premium?
No. You keep your playlists and saved music on the free plan, and you can still log in and play with ads.
Why is there no cancel option on my Spotify account page?
Your Premium is probably billed through a partner such as a phone or internet provider. Find their contact link under Payment on the account page and cancel with them.
Why was I charged after cancelling Spotify?
Check Payment under Your plan. A next payment date means the cancel didn't complete, so repeat it. A switch-to-free date means it worked and you probably cancelled just after the payment processed.
Can I get a refund from Spotify?
Spotify lets you keep Premium until the end of the period you paid for. It can't refund store gift cards or partner payments, but audiobook refunds may be possible within 7 days of payment.
