Spotify audiobooks work on listening hours: Premium Individual, and the managers of Premium Family and Duo plans, get a monthly allowance of audiobook time from the subscriber catalog, which renews each billing cycle. When it runs out, you can add Audiobooks+, buy a top-up, or buy a single title on the web.
Three catches people miss. Time is counted at normal speed, so playing a book at 2x doesn't stretch your hours. Unused hours expire at the start of each billing period, and Spotify doesn't refund them. And Family and Duo members get no hours of their own unless the manager buys them some. The number of hours varies by country, so check your own plan in the app. This is all as of October 2026, from Spotify's US help pages, and other countries may see different options.
Which plans include audiobook hours
- Premium Individual: yes.
- Premium Family: the plan manager only.
- Premium Duo: the plan manager only.
- Premium Student: no audiobook listening time.
Family and Duo members can't share the manager's hours. The manager can buy members their own allowance instead, either Audiobooks+ for Plan Members or a top-up. If you're weighing up plans, here's what each Spotify Premium plan costs, and students can check how Spotify Premium Student works.
How Spotify counts your hours
This is the bit that surprises people. Spotify counts time at the book's normal speed. A 5-hour audiobook played at 2x finishes in 2.5 hours, but it still uses 5 hours of your allowance. Listening to a chapter again uses the hours again, too.
When your hours run out, you can't play subscriber-catalog audiobooks until you add more time. If that happens mid-chapter, the app tells you and saves your place.
Your four options, side by side
| Option | Who can use it | Resets or expires | When it's used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan hours | Individual; Family and Duo managers only | Monthly | First |
| Audiobooks+ | Individual; Family and Duo managers (members have their own add-on) | Monthly | After plan hours |
| Top-up | Individual; everyone in a Family or Duo plan | 12 months from purchase | Last |
| Buying a single title | Any account | One-time payment, no expiry stated | Separate, doesn't count toward your hours |
The order matters. Spotify uses your plan hours first, then Audiobooks+ hours, then top-ups.
Audiobooks+ and top-ups
Audiobooks+ is a monthly recurring add-on, billed with your plan, and its hours reset each month just like your plan hours do.
Top-ups are one-time purchases. Each one is valid for 12 months from purchase, you can buy more than one, and they're only used after your plan hours and Audiobooks+ hours have run out. You can pay by card, PayPal or Google Play Billing. Top-ups work for Individual plans and for everyone in a Family or Duo plan, so they're the way to give a member their own time.
Buying a single audiobook
Buying a title is a one-time payment that gives your account access to that audiobook. You pay by card or PayPal, and payments can only be made on the web. After that you play it in the app and can download the whole book. Spotify and its partners keep ownership of the content, so what you're paying for is access to the title.
Titles you buy this way don't count toward your plan's monthly hours. On Android, with a plan that has no listening time, tap Get email on the audiobook and use the BUY AUDIOBOOK link in the email. On desktop and the web, use Buy book.

How to check your hours and get more
- On mobile, tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy, then Account.
- Tap your plan name, then Audiobook listening time. On the web, open the Audiobook listening time page.
- If you want more, choose Audiobooks+ or a top-up.
- To keep access to one title, buy it on the web, then listen in the app.
Tracking can lag if you pause mid-chapter or stay offline for a long time, so give it a moment before you worry. Bought titles can be downloaded in full, and here's how Spotify downloads work.
Refunds on audiobooks
Spotify doesn't refund unused or expired listening time. A refund may be possible within 7 days of payment, if a title is removed for policy violations, or for a top-up with no hours used.
My verdict
Use your plan hours on books you'll finish that month, because they don't roll over. Save single-title buys for the ones you'll replay, since replays eat hours. Top-ups make sense for slow listeners, as they last 12 months. And if you're on Family or Duo as a member, ask the manager about a top-up before you start a long series.
Frequently asked questions
Does Spotify Premium include audiobooks?
Premium Individual does, and so do Premium Family and Duo for the plan manager only. Premium Student doesn't include audiobook listening time.
Does listening at 2x speed save Spotify audiobook hours?
No. Time is counted at normal speed, so a 5-hour audiobook played at 2x still uses 5 hours.
Do unused Spotify audiobook hours roll over?
No. Unused plan hours expire at the start of the next billing period, and Spotify doesn't refund unused or expired listening time.
How long do Spotify audiobook top-ups last?
12 months from purchase. They're used only after your plan hours and Audiobooks+ hours run out.
Can I buy an audiobook in the Spotify app?
Payments can only be made on the web. On Android, tap Get email on the audiobook and use the BUY AUDIOBOOK link; on desktop and the web, use Buy book.
