Nevada State Business License: $200 or $500 a Year and Who Is Exempt

Most businesses operating in Nevada need a State Business License from the Nevada Secretary of State, including sole proprietors. As of October 2026 the annual renewal fee is $500 for corporations and $200 for all other business types, and a late renewal adds a $100 penalty.

The license is governed by NRS Chapter 76. This page uses the Secretary of State's State Business License requirements page, its license FAQ and its exemption FAQ, all read in October 2026.

Nevada State Business License in numbers

ItemNevada (as of October 2026)
Annual fee, corporations$500
Annual fee, all other business types$200
Late penalty$100 on top of the annual fee
Copy of a license$2
Extra fee for filing onlineNone
Refund if you stop trading earlyNone

How to get or renew the license, step by step

  1. Work out whether you're a Title 7 entity or an NT7 business.
  2. Check whether any exemption applies, and if so whether you can claim it online or must file a notarised declaration in the office.
  3. File online through SilverFlume, choosing the option to get a new State Business License or renew one, or file by mail or in person.
  4. Pay the fee, plus any penalty. The Secretary of State rejects filings that arrive without the right fees.
  5. Diary the renewal for the last day of your anniversary month.
  6. Register separately with the Department of Taxation and your city or county as needed.

Two kinds of filer: Title 7 and NT7

The Secretary of State sorts businesses into two groups, and the rules differ:

  • Title 7 entities: corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships and similar entities formed in Nevada, or foreign ones qualified there. Their license is filed with the Initial or Annual List of Officers and can't be filed separately.
  • NT7 businesses: sole proprietors, general partnerships and others not formed under Title 7. They file a license application and renew it on or before the expiration date on the license.

If you're forming an entity, my guide to starting an LLC covers formation, and my registered agent guide covers the in-state agent you'll need.

Deadlines that matter

  1. New Title 7 entity: the Initial List of Officers and the State Business License fee are due by the last day of the month after you file your formation documents.
  2. Renewals: the fee and renewal form are due on the last day of the anniversary month of the original filing. For Title 7 entities this is part of the Annual List.
  3. NT7 renewals: renew on or before the expiration date shown on the license.
  4. Exemptions: NT7 license exemptions must be renewed every year.

Filing online through SilverFlume makes the filing effective immediately, with no extra fee. There's no way to expedite a paper filing.

Who is exempt

The FAQs set out several exemptions, each with conditions:

  • Non-profits organised under NRS Chapter 82 don't need a license.
  • Governmental entities can claim exemption 001.
  • Home-based businesses can claim exemption 003, but only a natural person, or a married couple, operating solely from their personal residence in Nevada, with net earnings from the business below a set share of the average Nevada wage.
  • A natural person owning four or fewer rental dwelling units can claim exemption 004.

The home-business exemption has tight edges

This is where people get caught. The exemption FAQ says the 003 home-based exemption isn't available to corporations, LLCs or other Title 7 entities, only to individuals or married couples. It doesn't apply if you also have a separate shop or office, or if your business is open to the general public during normal working hours, though meeting clients at home by appointment is fine. It isn't available if your home is outside Nevada. And the 004 rental exemption is for individuals only, not an LLC holding the units. Real estate agents and brokers aren't treated as working from home and need a license.

Entities claiming any exemption must file a notarised Declaration of Eligibility with their list, in the office, as online exemption claims are no longer available.

Default, revocation and closing

Miss a renewal and the business goes into default. After one year, a business in default is revoked, and reinstating it means paying all back fees and penalties, including the license fee. To close, sole proprietors and general partnerships complete a cancellation form online. Phone calls, emails or letters don't count.

The Secretary of State doesn't tell the Department of Taxation, your city or your county when your status changes. You must tell them yourself.

Other registrations to check

  • Use tax: under NRS 372.220, a business that buys tangible goods for use in Nevada must register with the Department of Taxation for a use tax account.
  • Local licenses: cities and counties may need proof of your state license, which is the license itself or a Nevada Business Search result.
  • Nevada Business Identification Number: a unique number assigned to each business, used on registrations with other agencies.

My verdict

Budget $200 a year for a sole owner or LLC and $500 for a corporation as of October 2026, and diary the anniversary month, because late means $100 more. The home-business exemption is narrower than its name suggests: individuals only, Nevada homes only, no shop and no walk-in customers.
