What Does Renew Listing Mean on Facebook Marketplace?

Renew listing on Facebook Marketplace keeps your listing active. Facebook may delete listings that have been inactive for two years or more, and renewing (or editing any part of the listing) resets that two year timeframe. To renew, go to Marketplace, click Selling, then Your listings, find the listing and click Renew.

The button sounds more dramatic than it needs to. Your listing doesn't run out after a few days. Renew is Facebook's way of letting you tell it the item's still for sale, so the listing isn't treated as abandoned.

Why Facebook asks you to renew a listing

Facebook's Help Centre says you can keep a listing on Marketplace for as long as you're actively selling the item. To keep Marketplace relevant and up to date, though, listings that have been inactive for two years or more may be deleted.

That deletion is final. Facebook says the listing details, such as the title, description, photos and price, are permanently removed and can't be recovered. If you'd like a record of your listings, you can download your Marketplace information through the Download your information tool in your Facebook settings.

How to renew a listing on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook's steps on a computer are:

  1. From your Feed, click Marketplace.
  2. Click Selling, then Your listings in the left menu.
  3. Find the listing you want to keep and click Renew.

If you can't see Marketplace in your left menu, click See more. If a listing has already been deleted for inactivity, there's nothing to renew: you'll need to create it again.

Renew or edit: which should you use?

Both reset the two year clock, so the choice depends on whether anything about the item has changed.

OptionWhat it doesBest when
RenewKeeps the listing active and resets the two year timeframeNothing about the item or price has changed
Edit listingLets you change the details, then click Update. It also resets the two year timeframeYou want a new price, better photos or a clearer description
Mark as sold or pendingShows buyers the item's gone or on holdYou've agreed a sale
DeleteRemoves the listingYou no longer want to sell

To edit instead, Facebook's steps on a computer are:

  1. From your Feed, click Marketplace in the left menu. If you can't see it, click See more.
  2. Click Selling in the left menu, then click Your listings.
  3. Click the Options button on the listing you want to change.
  4. Click Edit listing, change the details, then click Update.

If you sell several of the same item in one listing, you don't need to edit it to show how many are left. Facebook says that once there are ten or fewer left in a multi-quantity listing, it shows buyers the number automatically, and a single item listing shows Only 1 for sale.

When you can't edit a listing

Facebook won't let you edit a listing if an order for it's pending or waiting to be accepted or declined, if a label has been generated, or if the listing has been sold. A multi-quantity listing can only be edited if it's never received an order.

Does renewing a listing boost it?

Facebook's article on listing activity describes Renew as the way to keep a listing active and reset the two year timeframe. It doesn't describe it as a way to push the listing higher in search. Boosting a listing as an ad is a separate thing, and Facebook notes that ad data from a boosted listing may be kept separately, while the original listing is still deleted if it's been inactive for two years.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Buyers can sort Marketplace search results by distance or by the date the listing was created, so a fresh, well described listing is still your best route to being seen. My guide on selling on Facebook Marketplace covers the photos and descriptions that help, and if your listing is stuck, here's why a Facebook Marketplace listing shows as pending.

My advice

If Facebook prompts you to renew and you're still selling, click Renew and move on. If the item hasn't had a single message in weeks, edit it instead: drop the price, add a clearer first photo, describe any marks honestly. That resets the clock too, and it gives the listing a better chance of selling.
