To delete your ChatGPT account, sign in on the web, open Settings, choose Account, select Delete next to Delete account, type your email and DELETE, then confirm. It's permanent: OpenAI deletes your data within 30 days, and an App Store or Google Play plan keeps running unless you cancel it there first.
Deleting a ChatGPT account takes about a minute. Undoing it isn't possible, so it's worth knowing what goes with it before you click. OpenAI's own help article is clear on the steps but quieter on a couple of side effects, and its web and app articles even disagree on one of them. Here's the full picture.
Steps to delete your ChatGPT account on the web
- Sign in to ChatGPT in your browser.
- Open your account menu and select Settings.
- Select Account.
- Next to Delete account, select Delete.
- Enter your account email address or phone number, then type DELETE when prompted.
- Select Permanently delete my account.
Deleting it from the iPhone or Android app
You can do the same thing on your phone. In the Android app, OpenAI says to tap the two lines in the top left corner to open the menu, open your settings, go to Data Controls and choose Delete Account. The iPhone app uses the same Data Controls then Delete Account route. You'll be asked to confirm, just as on the web.
The web route is still the one I'd use, because its confirmation screens are the clearest and it's easier to double-check you're signed in to the right account. That matters more than people think: plenty of us have one login through Google and another through an old email address, and deleting the wrong one is an annoying mistake to discover a week later.
What disappears when you delete it
OpenAI says deleting your account stops you using it for any OpenAI service, which includes the API as well as ChatGPT. Your data is deleted within 30 days, although OpenAI may keep a limited set for longer where the law requires or allows it. Every chat, memory and file goes with the account, and deleted chats can't be recovered.
| What you might assume | What OpenAI's help pages say |
|---|---|
| Deleting the account cancels my plan | Only if it's billed directly by ChatGPT. Apple App Store and Google Play plans keep running until you cancel them there |
| I can reactivate it later | No. Deleted accounts can't be reactivated |
| I can sign up again with the same email | The web article says yes, after 30 days. The iOS and Android articles say no |
| My work account can be deleted the same way | No. Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces have no self-service deletion |
The App Store and Google Play catch
This is the one that bites people. If you upgraded through your iPhone or Android phone, the plan is managed by Apple or Google, not by OpenAI. Deleting your ChatGPT account doesn't touch it, so cancel it in the App Store or Google Play first, then delete the account. If you upgraded on the ChatGPT website, deleting the account cancels it for you.
Can you reuse your email address afterwards?
Here OpenAI contradicts itself. Its main web article says you can create a new account with the same email address after 30 days, as long as the old account was fully deleted rather than deactivated. Its iOS and Android articles say you won't be able to use the same email again. If keeping that address matters to you, assume the stricter answer and plan around it, or ask OpenAI support before you delete.
If you can't sign in to delete it
You don't need to be logged in. OpenAI says to go to its Privacy Portal and choose Make a Privacy Request, then verify the email address or phone number linked to the account. That route suits anyone who signed up years ago and lost the password, or who wants an old account gone without resetting anything.
Work and school accounts
If your ChatGPT login belongs to a company or school workspace, OpenAI doesn't offer self-service deletion. Your admin controls it, so that's who to ask. Deleting a personal account also does nothing to a separate workspace account you might have.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Before you delete: a quick checklist
- Cancel any plan you took out through the App Store or Google Play.
- Export anything you want to keep, because deleted chats can't be brought back.
- Check whether the same email runs an OpenAI Ads account, as OpenAI warns deletion can lock you out of it.
- Ask yourself whether archiving a few chats would do the job instead. Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar without deleting it.
If what's really bothering you is privacy rather than the account itself, my guide to whether ChatGPT is private walks through the data controls you can change without losing anything.
My verdict
Delete it from the web, cancel any phone-store plan first, and save anything you care about before you start. It's a clean, quick process, but it's final, and the email-reuse question alone is a good reason to pause for a moment. If you're leaving for another assistant, have a look at how to use Gemini so you know what you're moving to.
