YouTube Premium Price Increase: Notice, Billing Date and Your Options

When YouTube raises the price of Premium, it emails you at least 30 days before the increase applies in your country, and existing members pay the new rate from the first billing cycle that starts at least 30 days after the change. Your service carries on as normal unless you cancel, although in some countries you have to acknowledge the new price to keep your membership.

That's how YouTube Help describes it as of October 2026. YouTube says it occasionally updates membership prices to keep up with market changes, which can include inflation and local tax changes.

Two details matter more than people expect. A paused membership isn't protected: you're billed the new price when it resumes. And a tax change in your country can raise what you pay even when YouTube hasn't changed the plan price, so a small jump on your statement isn't always a price rise.

How the notice and billing date work

YouTube Help uses its own example to explain the timing. If the price goes up for new users on 1 September, an existing member won't be charged the higher rate until their next billing cycle in October.

Your situationWhat YouTube Help says happens
Existing member, active planEmail at least 30 days ahead, then the new rate from the first billing cycle at least 30 days after the increase
New member signing upYou pay the price shown in the offer when you sign up
Membership pausedNo charge while paused, then the new price when you resume
Country where you must acceptA notice appears in your membership details and you need to acknowledge the change to continue
Local tax changeYour total can go up even without a plan price change
Membership already canceledYou can re-subscribe at youtube.com/premium/inapp

Do you have to accept it?

In most places, nothing interrupts your Premium service. YouTube Help says, though, that in some countries or regions you may need to acknowledge and accept a price change to keep your membership going.

To check, go to the Purchases and Memberships page in your account. If action is needed, you'll find a notice inside your membership details. My advice: look as soon as the email lands, because ignoring a required acknowledgement is the one way a price change can affect your access.

Where to see your current price

Everything sits on the Purchases and Memberships page, which you can reach at youtube.com/paid_memberships. YouTube Help says you'll see:

  • Your membership type (trial, individual, family or student) and its price, listed under each membership's name.
  • Your Next billing date and the amount.
  • Whether you're active or paused. Click Manage membership to see your next billing date, when a trial ends, or the option to unpause.
  • Your active payment method and any backup methods. A backup keeps your benefits running if the first card can't be charged.

If you joined through Apple, you'll see Billed by Apple and you have to manage the membership through Apple. For receipts, YouTube points you to the Activity section at payments.google.com, where each transaction shows the date and time, its status and which payment method was charged.

Your options when the price goes up

Pause instead of cancelling

Pausing is useful if you only want a break. YouTube Help says you can pause for 1 to 6 months using a slider, and the pause starts after your current billing cycle ends. While it's paused, you and anyone on your family plan lose Premium benefits, but downloaded videos and music are kept until you resume.

There are limits. Annual plans can't be paused, members billed through Apple can't pause, and Google Play billing doesn't allow pausing either. And remember, you'll pay the new price when the pause ends.

Change your plan

You can switch to an annual plan or a family plan, or move from a family plan to an individual membership, from the paid memberships page. If you only want music, YouTube Music Premium is a separate membership, and YouTube Music Premium members can upgrade to YouTube Premium at any time. Membership changes apply across YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids. If you're eligible, the YouTube Premium student plan is worth checking before you decide.

Cancel

Canceling turns off auto-renewal. You won't be charged again, and your benefits continue until the end of the billing period. If you joined from the iOS app, you cancel through your Apple account, and if you're billed by Google Play, you cancel in Google Play's settings. The full walkthrough is in how to cancel YouTube Premium.

Refunds after a price change

Canceling doesn't refund the rest of your current period. YouTube Help says you won't be refunded for the time between canceling and the end of your membership. If you want to cancel immediately and get money back, you need to contact YouTube's support team, and once a refund is processed, your benefits stop.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

You may also be eligible for a refund if videos or features linked to your purchase don't work. Purchases made through the Apple store follow Apple's refund policies, so you'd contact Apple. I've covered the options in more depth in how to get a YouTube Premium refund.

When a higher charge isn't a price rise

Before assuming YouTube has raised the price, check the reasons its Help lists for unexpected charges, which show on your statement as GOOGLE*YouTube:

  1. Tax rate changes. Tax depends on where you're located and can change, causing minor monthly fluctuations.
  2. You upgraded to a family plan. That costs more than an individual plan.
  3. Bank fees or currency conversion. International transaction fees and conversion between your local currency and US dollars can change the total.
  4. Authorization holds. A temporary hold to check your card is valid isn't a charge, and YouTube says it can show for 1 to 14 business days.
  5. More than one membership. You may have overlapping memberships, or another Google Account with its own membership.

YouTube Help also notes a technical issue where some members on a recurring student plan were overcharged, and says refunds have been started for everyone affected.

In the European Economic Area, you're charged VAT on some Google purchases and can request a VAT invoice. In India, Reserve Bank of India eMandate rules mean you may need to verify or re-enter payment details to keep recurring memberships running.

The bottom line

A Premium price rise is predictable once you know the rules. You'll always get at least 30 days' warning by email, and nothing changes until a billing cycle that starts after that window. My advice: when the email arrives, open Purchases and Memberships, check whether you need to acknowledge the change, and decide then whether to keep it, switch plans, pause or cancel. Don't pause just to dodge it, because you'll pay the new rate when you come back.

Frequently asked questions

How will I know if YouTube Premium is going up?

YouTube Help says you'll get an email at least 30 days before a price increase in your country or territory.

When will I be charged the new price?

Existing members pay the new rate from the first billing cycle that starts at least 30 days after the increase. New members pay the price shown in the offer when they sign up.

Do I need to accept the price change?

In most places your service carries on. In some countries or regions you need to acknowledge and accept the change to keep your membership, and a notice appears in your membership details if so.

Can I pause instead of cancelling?

Yes, for 1 to 6 months, unless you're on an annual plan or billed through Apple or Google Play. You'll be billed at the new price when you resume.

Where do I see what I currently pay?

Go to the Purchases and Memberships page in your account. Your membership type and price are listed under each membership, along with your next billing date and amount.

Can I get a refund after a price increase?

Canceling stops future charges but doesn't refund the rest of your current period. To cancel immediately with a refund, contact YouTube's support team. Apple-billed memberships follow Apple's refund policies.
