Wise's help pages say you can send dirhams to individual and business bank accounts in the UAE using a 23-character IBAN starting with AE, usually within 0 to 2 working days. Wise says it can't support transfers from dirhams, and the page I read for opening a Wise balance doesn't list the UAE. Check the app for your own options.
The UAE is a strange case for Wise, and I think that's why searches for it are so common. Plenty of people live and work there, many are paid from abroad, and the answers online mix up three different questions: can Wise pay me, can I open a Wise account, and can I send dirhams out. Wise's pages treat these separately, so I'll do the same.
Paying dirhams into a UAE bank account
According to Wise's AED guide, you can send dirhams to individual and business bank accounts in the UAE. The sender needs your full name, which Wise says must be up to 35 English characters only, and your IBAN. If your bank holds your name in Arabic script, ask it for the English version it uses on the account.
What a UAE IBAN looks like
Wise says the IBAN is 23 characters and starts with AE. Wise's IBAN page breaks it down as a two-letter country code, two check digits, a three-character bank code and a sixteen-digit account number. It adds that for international transfers to the UAE a standard bank account number isn't enough, and Swift codes are typically required. Your banking app will show the IBAN, and getting it right first time saves a lot of chasing.
How long a Wise payment to the UAE takes
| What I checked | What Wise says for the UAE |
|---|---|
| Where money can go | Individual and business bank accounts in the UAE |
| IBAN | 23 characters, starting with AE |
| Name on the account | Up to 35 English characters only |
| Amount | No cap on the AED amount, though the sending currency may have its own limit |
| Arrival | Usually 0 to 2 working days after Wise receives and converts the money |
| Conversion | Can take up to 2 working days |
Wise also says the UAE works Monday to Friday, with Friday a half day, so a payment sent late in the week can slip into the next. Its UAE partners sometimes run extra information and security checks, and if one is needed Wise emails the sender asking for more details about the transfer. If your client mentions an email like that, tell them to answer it quickly.
Can you open a Wise account if you live in the UAE?
I can't tell you yes, and I won't pretend otherwise. The Wise page about where you can hold a balance lists a long set of countries and territories, and the UAE isn't on the version I read. Wise's page on where you can use Wise names the places it doesn't operate, and the UAE isn't named there either. Wise's UAE IBAN page doesn't say whether accounts are available to residents, and it points to an availability checker instead.
So use that checker in the Wise app or website before you plan around holding foreign currency there. Availability depends on location and account type, and it can change.
Why you can't pay for a Wise transfer with dirhams
Wise says it currently can't support transfers from AED. That means you can't pay for a transfer with dirhams unless you're paying from your Wise account. If you're a UAE resident wanting to send money abroad, you'd need to look at a different route or at what the app offers you. This is the opposite of the incoming direction, which Wise documents clearly.
The three questions people mix up
First, can a client abroad pay you? Wise's AED guide says yes, into a UAE bank account. Second, can you hold currency in Wise as a UAE resident? That's the one I can't confirm from the pages I read. Third, can you send dirhams out through Wise? Wise says it currently can't support transfers from AED unless you pay from your Wise account.
Keeping those apart stops you telling a client something that turns out to be wrong. If you only need to get paid, the first answer is the only one that matters, and it needs nothing more than your IBAN and your name as the bank holds it.

A sensible plan if you're paid from abroad
- Ask your bank for your IBAN and the English version of your name.
- Tell the client which currency you're expecting and to pay through Wise to your UAE bank account.
- Ask them to avoid sending late on a Thursday or Friday if timing matters.
- Tell them to reply fast if Wise emails them for more information.
- Keep the invoice and transfer receipt for your records.
Comparing Wise with other options for people in the UAE
Wise is one option among several, and some clients will prefer a different tool. I've covered how Payoneer works for people in the UAE and what PayPal offers UAE users, and each has its own rules about receiving and withdrawing. If you're comparing providers in general, my Wise and Revolut comparison is worth a look.
Ask your bank about anything it needs for incoming foreign payments, and speak to a local accountant about tax. I can't advise on either. Everything above comes from Wise's own pages, and Wise says information on its site may change, so recheck before a big payment.
