To make a brochure in Canva, pick a brochure template, swap in your photos, logo, text and colours, then use File, Rulers and guides to keep each panel tidy before downloading a PDF Print file. The step people skip: turn on Show print bleed so backgrounds reach the edges after trimming.
A good brochure still earns its place on a reception desk, at a craft fair stall or tucked into an order. People pick it up, take it home and keep it, which is more than most social posts manage.
Canva makes the design side easy, but brochures are a print job, and print has rules a screen doesn't: folds, bleed, safe zones. Get those wrong and your phone number ends up in a crease or trimmed off. Here's the whole process, from template to print-ready file, based on Canva's own pages.
Starting a brochure in Canva from a template
Canva's own brochure page sums the process up in a few steps: pick a template, make it yours, then print. In practice:
- From the Canva homepage, search for brochure and browse the templates.
- Open one that's close to the layout you want. Tri-fold designs are the classic shape.
- Swap in your own photos, logo, text and colours.
- Check every panel, then download or send it to print.
Canva describes its tri-fold brochure as six panels, three on each side, that fold inward. Keep that picture in your head, because the order you read panels on screen isn't the order people read them in your hand.
Planning the panels of a Canva tri-fold brochure
| Panel | What usually goes there |
|---|---|
| Front cover | Your name, logo, one clear promise and a strong photo |
| Back cover | Contact details, website and social handles |
| Inside flap | A short introduction or a standout offer people see first |
| Three inside panels | What you do, who it's for, proof such as testimonials |
Before you design anything, sketch it on a sheet of A4 folded into three. It sounds old-fashioned, but it's the fastest way to see which panel lands where.
Using Canva guides to line up brochure panels
Guides stop text drifting into the folds. On a computer, Canva's help says:
- Select File in the top menu.
- Choose Rulers and guides, then Add guides.
- Pick a preset: 12 columns, 3 columns or a 3x3 Grid, or choose Custom.
- Select Add guides.
The 3 columns preset is a natural fit for a tri-fold, giving you one column per panel to keep content inside. Canva locks guides by default so you don't nudge them by accident. You can drag in extra guides from the side and top rulers, too. Canva notes guides and rulers aren't available on mobile, so do the layout on a computer.
Setting margins and bleed for a printed Canva brochure
This is where most homemade brochures go wrong. Canva's help explains the zones from the centre outwards:
- Safe zone: inside your margins. Keep text and logos here.
- Trim line: where the paper gets cut after printing.
- Bleed: just past the trim line. Stretch backgrounds into it, never text.
Turn on margins with File, then Settings, then Show margins. Turn on bleed with File, then Settings, then Show print bleed. Canva adds 0.125 inches of bleed on all sides for products that get trimmed, and you can't change that size. If you see white gaps at the edges, stretch your background to cover them.
For an extra check, tick Show danger zone detection under File, then Settings. Canva shows a red overlay when something sits too close to the edge.

Downloading a print-ready Canva brochure
If you're printing with a local printer rather than through Canva, they'll usually want a print PDF with crop marks. Canva's steps are:
- Make sure bleed is switched on.
- Select Share, then Download.
- Under File type, choose PDF Print.
- Tick Crop marks and bleed.
- Download the file.
Crop marks only show up in the exported PDF, not in the editor, so don't worry when you can't see them on screen. Canva also advises checking with your print provider about bleed if you're printing elsewhere, since they may trim differently.
Printing your brochure through Canva
If you'd rather Canva prints it, its brochure page describes choosing your print options, checking and approving a proof, and having the brochures delivered. Canva says its Auto-Proofing checks text size, whether elements sit within the bleed zone and image resolution, which is a handy safety net.
Turning a Canva brochure into a digital one
Not every brochure needs paper. The same design works as a PDF you email to leads or add to your website. If you go digital, make the web address and booking details clickable. Here's my guide on adding clickable links in Canva. And when you've arranged a photo, caption and icon into a block you like, grouping elements in Canva keeps them together while you move things around.
Brochure design tips for small businesses
- One message per panel. If a panel needs a paragraph and a list and three photos, split it.
- Use your brand colours and fonts throughout so it matches your website and social posts.
- Put a clear next step on the back: call, visit, scan or book.
- Use real photos of your work or premises wherever you can.
- Print one copy and fold it before printing a batch.
If your Canva brochure doesn't print right
- Text cut off? It was outside the safe zone; turn on margins and pull it in.
- White edges? Stretch the background into the bleed area.
- No guides or rulers? Switch to a computer, since Canva says they aren't on mobile.
- No bleed option? Canva says margins, bleed and crop marks aren't available yet in Canva Docs, so start from a brochure template instead.
- Panels in the wrong order? Fold a test sheet and check which panel is the front.
