View once on WhatsApp lets you send a photo, video or voice message that disappears from the chat after the other person opens it one time. WhatsApp says they can't save, forward, share, copy, screenshot or screen record it, but as of Nov 2026 it also admits someone can still photograph the screen with a camera or another device.
That last part is the bit to remember. View once is a privacy aid, not a lock. Below is how to send one, what the person on the other end can and can't do, how you know it's been opened, and when I'd use it in a business chat. If you want the normal route for sending pictures first, my guide to sending photos on WhatsApp covers it.
Sending a view once photo, video or voice note
The Help Center gives two short routes, one for media and one for voice. Both work in individual chats and in group chats.
Photo or video
- Open an individual or group chat.
- Tap the attach icon, then Camera to take a new photo or video, or Gallery to pick one you already have. Videos from the camera have duration limits.
- Tap the view once icon. When it turns green, you're in view once mode.
- Tap send.
Voice message
- Open an individual or group chat.
- Hold the microphone and swipe up to lock the recording.
- Tap the view once icon until it turns green.
- Tap send.
The green icon is your only check before it goes. If it isn't green, it isn't view once, so glance at it every time.
What the recipient can and can't do
WhatsApp's list is short and specific. A view once photo or video won't be saved to the recipient's Photos or Gallery. They can't forward, share or copy it. They can't take a screenshot or a screen recording of it. And once they close the viewer, they can't open it again.
| Action | Photo or video | Voice message |
|---|---|---|
| Disappears from the chat after one open | Yes | Yes |
| Open or play it a second time | No | No |
| Saved, forwarded, shared or copied | No, none of these | Help spells these rules out for photos and videos only |
| Screenshot or screen recording | Blocked, WhatsApp says | Not covered in Help's list |
| Captured with a camera or another device | Still possible, WhatsApp says | Help's warning is about photos and videos |
| Sender sees an Opened receipt | Yes, if the recipient's read receipts are on | Yes, if the recipient's read receipts are on |
So the voice column is thinner than you'd expect. WhatsApp clearly says voice messages disappear after one listen, but its list of blocked actions is written about photos and videos. I wouldn't assume a voice note is any harder to keep than a picture.
The Opened receipt, and why it might not show
Here's what most people don't realise. The only sign you get that a view once message was seen is an Opened receipt in the chat, and WhatsApp says you'll see it if the recipient has read receipts enabled. If they've switched read receipts off, you may never get that confirmation.
That matters when you're sending something time-sensitive, like a one-off gate code or a draft you want a quick reaction on. No Opened receipt doesn't prove they haven't looked. How the setting works is in my guide to turning off read receipts on WhatsApp.
On the receiving side, you'll see an Opened receipt on the view once messages you've already viewed, which is a handy marker in a busy chat.
Opening one: you get one look
- Tap the view once message in the chat.
- Look at the photo or video, or listen to the voice message.
- Tap the close icon to exit the viewer.
WhatsApp says view once media isn't saved to your device, and once you exit the viewer you can't see it again. So if a customer sends you a view once photo of, say, a damaged delivery or a model number on a label, read off what you need before you close it. There's no second chance and no copy in your gallery to go back to.
The one limit WhatsApp admits
Credit where it's due: WhatsApp doesn't oversell this. Its Help article says it's still possible for someone to take a photo or video of the media, for example with a camera or another device, before it disappears. Nothing in the app can stop a second phone pointed at the screen.
People often ask the related question of whether the sender finds out about a screenshot. That has its own answer in my explainer on view once screenshots. The point for this page is narrower: WhatsApp blocks screenshots of view once media inside the app, and that's where its protection stops.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
When to use it, and when to leave it off
View once suits anything a person needs to see once and shouldn't keep lying around in a chat:
- A photo of a document detail you'd rather not leave sitting in a chat history.
- A short voice note with a one-time instruction, like a gate code for a delivery.
- A preview of draft work you don't want passed round the rest of a client's team.
It's the wrong tool for anything the other person needs to keep. They can't save it, so never send a customer a receipt, a booking confirmation, an address or instructions they'll need next week as view once. They'll open it, close it and lose it.
The other rule I'd give a team: don't send anything as view once that you'd regret being photographed. Treat it as a courtesy that keeps chats tidy, not proof nobody keeps a copy.
Verdict
I'd use view once for one-look details, in one-to-one chats and groups alike, and for voice notes as well as photos when it fits. Skip it for anything a customer needs to refer back to, and skip it for anything you couldn't live with being photographed on another phone. If you need proof it was seen, remember the Opened receipt only shows when their read receipts are on.
When customers send you photos and voice notes on WhatsApp, deciding what your team needs to keep and what can vanish after one look is part of the workflow planning I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
