Wise's pages list Saudi Arabia among the places where you can hold money, and its Saudi send-money page says recipients get riyals from Wise's local bank account. The catch is that the Saudi riyal isn't named in Wise's lists of currencies you can send, add or receive. Check the app before you promise a client anything.
Saudi Arabia is an odd case on Wise, and it's the reason I wanted to read the pages rather than repeat what I'd seen online. The country shows up in one list and the riyal is missing from several others. If you work with clients abroad and want to know what that means for getting paid, here's what Wise's own pages say.
Saudi Arabia is on the list for holding money
Wise's page on where you need to live to hold money names Saudi Arabia, and I found no extra restriction noted beside it. Several countries on that same list carry a note, such as personal accounts only. Saudi Arabia doesn't. Wise's page on where it operates also names the places it doesn't offer services, and Saudi Arabia isn't among them.
So the country itself is supported. Wise says you can keep 40+ currencies in an account and convert between them at the mid-market exchange rate. The question for a Saudi freelancer is which of those currencies are useful to you, and that's where the riyal comes in.
The riyal question
Wise's currency list is split in two: currencies you can both send from and to, and currencies you can only send to. I read both, and the Saudi riyal (SAR) isn't in either. Wise's separate page on the currencies you can add, keep and receive doesn't name SAR for adding money or for receiving through account details either.
I'd be careful about what that proves. A currency missing from a list on a help page isn't a statement about every situation, and Wise adds routes over time. But it does tell you not to count on a riyal balance or riyal account details, and to ask in the app before you plan an invoice around them.
| What I checked | What Wise's pages say for Saudi Arabia |
|---|---|
| Country listed for holding money | Yes, no extra restriction noted |
| On Wise's unsupported list | No |
| SAR in the send to and from list | Not named |
| SAR in the send-only list | Not named |
| SAR in add, keep and receive list | Not named |
| Recipient paid from | Wise's local bank account, per its Saudi page |
How Wise says a payment reaches Saudi Arabia
Wise's Saudi send-money page says the recipient gets money in SAR directly from Wise's local bank account. It adds that when you transfer with Wise you can receive to local bank accounts, with no need for a Wise account. That's the path a client abroad would use if they pay you through Wise: they send in their own currency, and your Saudi bank account receives riyals.
Wise's payment-methods guide for Saudi Arabia gives some useful local context for what happens next. It says Mada is the national debit card network and Sarie is the national instant payment system for transfers between bank accounts. Both are bank-side matters, so I'd ask your bank how it handles incoming international credits.
What I'd ask before sending anyone your details
- Ask your bank for the exact account name and number it wants clients to use.
- Ask whether it converts incoming foreign money itself or expects riyals.
- Ask what documents it may request for larger incoming payments.
- Open the Wise app and check which currencies it offers you, rather than relying on an article.
None of these cost anything and they save awkward emails later. I'd also ask the client to check the delivery estimate that Wise shows them before they confirm.
Holding other currencies as a Saudi resident
Because Saudi Arabia is on the holding list, the broader Wise offer is worth a look. The page on currencies you can add, keep and receive says you can keep 40+ currencies and convert between them at the mid-market rate. Which of them you can get account details for, and whether you can add money to them, varies by currency and by where you live. Wise's own page lists the details, and it's the one to trust over any blog post, including mine.
If you're paid in dollars or pounds by overseas clients, the real question is whether you want those in a Wise balance or want riyals in your bank straight away. Those are different workflows with different costs, and Wise's pages leave the choice to you.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
There's a simple way to handle the uncertainty. Before you quote a client, send yourself a small test question in writing: ask Wise support whether your profile can receive riyals, and keep the reply. It's a thirty second job, and it means you're relying on Wise's answer for your account rather than on a list that may have changed since I read it.
Fees and rates
Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange rate and shows its fee before you confirm. The Saudi page I read displayed example figures that move with the rate and the way you pay, so I won't quote any. Treat what the calculator shows on the day as the only number that counts.
Other ways to get paid in Saudi Arabia
Wise rarely stands alone for freelancers. I've written about how PayPal works in Saudi Arabia and Payoneer for Saudi users, and it's worth comparing how each handles withdrawals. For a neighbouring market with a different setup, Wise in the UAE is a good read.
Please check with your bank about anything it needs for incoming foreign payments, and ask a local accountant about tax. I can't advise on either.
