AI tools for auditors help with the slow parts of an engagement: extracting ledger data, analysing whole populations of transactions, matching evidence, sending confirmations and drafting workpapers. The useful ones keep a clear trail of what they did, fit your methodology and leave the judgement with the engagement team. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Audit teams face the same squeeze every busy season: more clients, tighter deadlines and the same number of people. A large share of the hours goes on gathering data, ticking documents and chasing confirmations rather than on judgement.
AI tools for auditors take on that groundwork. Some extract and standardise accounting data, some analyse every transaction for risk, and some run agents across the engagement. The ten below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. For the bookkeeping side of a practice, my guide to month-end bookkeeping automation for accountancy firms covers the close.
AI tools for auditors side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names the tool, an account or a plan or version of it as free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

The documentation rule AI must meet
PCAOB auditing standard AS 1215 says the auditor must retain audit documentation for seven years from the date the auditor grants permission to use the auditor's report in connection with the issuance of the company's financial statements. Work done by an AI tool becomes part of that record.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Before you adopt a tool, check that its outputs, the evidence it used and the reviewer's sign-off can be exported and kept for the whole retention period, and that the trail still makes sense to an inspector who wasn't there.
Questions to ask an audit AI vendor
- Can every result be traced back to the source data?
- Where is client data stored, and who can access it?
- Does it fit our methodology or impose its own?
- Can we export the full record for our files?
- How does it show which steps a person reviewed?
A safe way to bring AI into an audit
- Start with one low-risk task, such as data extraction or tie-outs.
- Run it alongside your current process on a single engagement.
- Compare the results and record any differences.
- Write a short internal policy on review and sign-off.
- Expand to more tasks only once the team trusts the output.
Where AI helps and where it doesn't
AI is strong at volume: reading every transaction, matching documents and spotting unusual patterns that sampling might miss. It's a powerful way to point attention at the right places.
It's weaker at judgement, context and professional scepticism. An unusual entry flagged by a model still needs a person to ask why it happened, and the conclusion stays with the engagement team.
Signs an AI tool fits your firm
- Every output links back to its source.
- Reviewers can see what they signed off.
- It works with your methodology.
- The team saves hours without losing control.

My plain advice on AI for auditors
Start with the task that eats the most hours and carries the least judgement, such as extracting data or tying out statements, and prove it on one engagement before rolling it out. Keep the review trail as carefully as the results, because an inspector will want to see both.
Bring the wider practice along with you rather than piloting in a corner. My overview of AI automation for accountants covers how firms are using it beyond the audit.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI for auditors?
Software that uses AI to extract data, analyse transactions, match evidence, send confirmations or draft workpapers during an audit.
Can AI replace auditors?
No, it handles volume and pattern-finding, while judgement, scepticism and the opinion stay with the engagement team.
Is AI allowed in a PCAOB audit?
Tools can support the work, but documentation rules like AS 1215 still apply to everything in the audit file.
How long must audit documentation be kept?
PCAOB AS 1215 says the auditor must retain audit documentation for seven years from the report release date.
Do these tools offer free plans?
None of the sites read for this list named a free plan, as the table shows, so most work through a demo first.
Which audit task should I automate first?
A high-volume, low-judgement task such as data extraction, tie-outs or confirmations is usually the safest start.
