You can play Spider Solitaire offline with most dedicated apps, because the game needs no server at all. The eight apps on this page all say on their Google Play listings that they play without internet; the real differences are ads, in-app purchases and how comfortable the cards are to read.
Spider Solitaire is the card game people play to switch their brain off without switching it off entirely. It's also one of the best offline games you can have on a phone, because nothing about it needs a server: it's you, two decks and a lot of sequences. The tricky part is choosing an app, because the Play Store has dozens and they're not all honest about what they need.
I went through the Google Play listings of the most-installed Spider Solitaire apps and kept only the ones whose own description says they play offline. Here's the list, in no particular order, with the details that matter: who makes each one, how many installs it has, and whether it carries ads or in-app purchases.

| Spider Solitaire Classic (Game Maker) | Game Maker Ltd. | 10M+ | Contains ads, in-app purchases | Lists 'offline play' among its features |

The eight offline Spider Solitaire apps, one by one
Spider Solitaire: Card Games (MobilityWare)
The biggest name on the list, with more than 50M installs on Google Play. A good default if you want a familiar, polished Spider game and don't mind ads between deals.
Spider Solitaire (Classic Puzzle Games Maker)
A no-frills Spider game that says plainly anyone can play it offline. It shows the Contains ads label but no in-app purchases label, which suits people who don't want a shop.
Spider Solitaire Classic (Game Maker)
Pitched at players who like classic rules and strategy. Good if you want the traditional game without extra themes getting in the way.
Spider Solitaire (nerByte)
From nerByte, with more than 5M installs. A sensible pick for anyone who plays a quick hand on the commute and wants it to open instantly.
Fun Spider Solitaire (EWG Studio)
The most explicit offline wording of the group: the listing says no internet connection is required. Ads appear, but there's no in-app purchases label.
Daily Spider Solitaire Classic (Big Cake)
Built around daily deals, so it gives you a reason to come back each day. The daily part may want a connection to refresh, while ordinary games play offline.
Vita Spider Solitaire
Its listing says it's designed with seniors in mind, so it's a thoughtful choice for an older relative who wants larger, clearer cards.
Spider Solitaire Retro Card (Worthy Journey)
A retro look, with unlimited hints and undo according to the listing. Handy for learning the game without feeling stuck.
The catch with free Spider Solitaire apps
Every app on this list shows the Contains ads label on Google Play, and most also show in-app purchases. That's how free card games are funded. The good news is that offline, many apps can't load new ads, so a flight can feel quieter than playing at home. The listings don't promise that, though, so don't choose an app on that basis alone.
If ads are the deal-breaker, look at the ones without the in-app purchases label, such as the apps from Classic Puzzle Games Maker, EWG Studio and Worthy Journey. They still show ads, but there's no shop nudging you towards extras.

One suit, two suits or four: picking a difficulty for offline play
Spider Solitaire is usually offered with one, two or four suits. One suit is relaxing and you'll win most games. Two suits is where most regular players settle. Four suits is hard enough that you'll lose plenty, which can be frustrating on a long flight with no way to look up tips. If you're new, start with one suit and move up once you're winning comfortably.
How to set up a Spider Solitaire app for a trip
- Install it at home and open it once, so any first-run download finishes.
- Play one full game, then turn on airplane mode and start another.
- Turn off sounds if you'll be playing next to someone sleeping.
- Check the daily challenge separately: daily features may need a connection to refresh.
- If a child might play, switch off in-app purchases in your phone's settings.
Spider Solitaire for older players
Spider is a favourite with grandparents, and a couple of these apps lean into that. Vita Spider Solitaire's listing says it's tailored for seniors. Whichever app you choose, look in the settings for larger cards and a simpler card back, and turn on the undo button. A game that's comfortable to read is far more relaxing than one that's technically free of ads.
Watch out for solitaire apps that promise rewards
Some solitaire apps advertise prizes or reward schemes. Those are a different kind of app and they usually need the internet. I've written about how to judge solitaire apps that promise real rewards, but for offline play, stick with the straightforward card games above.
More offline card games
If you fancy a change from patience games, trick-taking card games are a good next step for two or more players around a table. And for any new download, here's how to check that any game works offline before you leave home.
My take on Spider Solitaire offline
Spider Solitaire is about as offline-friendly as games get, and every app here says so in its own listing. Choose by the things that will annoy you on a long journey: ads, a pushy shop, or cards too small to read. Install it at home, test it in airplane mode, and you've got hours of calm sorted.
