The short version: WhatsApp backups to Google Drive usually fail because the Google account on your phone does not match the one WhatsApp is trying to back up to, or your phone is low on storage, or a setting like Wi-Fi only or battery optimisation is quietly blocking the upload. Check the account match first, then storage, then the backup settings, in that order.
I've sorted this exact problem for friends and clients more times than I can count. It's almost never one big mystery. It's one of a handful of small things, and once you know where to look it takes minutes, not hours.
The five most common causes
Before you start changing settings, it helps to know what you're looking for. Here's what in fact causes a failed or stuck WhatsApp to Google Drive backup, roughly in order of how often I see them.
| Cause | How common | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong or mismatched Google account | Very common | Settings, Chats, Chat backup, check the account listed |
| Low storage on phone or in Google Drive | Very common | Check phone storage and your Google One storage |
| Backup set to Wi-Fi only, but you're not on Wi-Fi | Common | Settings, Chats, Chat backup, Back up over Wi-Fi only |
| Battery optimisation stopping WhatsApp running in the background | Common | Phone Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Battery |
| A stuck or corrupted previous backup | Less common but stubborn | Delete the backup and start a fresh one |
Fix it step by step
Step 1: confirm the Google account matches
This is the single biggest cause, by a distance. If you changed your Google account, added a second one to your phone, or reset your device, WhatsApp may still be pointing at an old account that no longer has room, or simply isn't the one you check.
- Android: open WhatsApp, tap the three dots in the top right, then Settings, Chats, Chat backup. Look at the Google Account row. If it's the wrong account, tap it and choose the correct one, or add a new account if it isn't listed.
- iPhone: iPhone backs up to iCloud, not Google Drive, unless you have specifically installed and linked the Google Drive backup option in WhatsApp on iPhone through Settings, Chats, Chat Backup, Google Drive Settings. Confirm the same email address you use for Drive is signed in there.
Step 2: check storage on both ends
WhatsApp backups are exempt from your normal Google Drive storage limit, but your phone's own storage is not. If your phone is nearly full, the backup can fail silently, or WhatsApp itself can behave oddly and never queue a backup at all.
- Android: go to Settings, Storage (or Settings, Device Care, Storage on Samsung phones) and check you have at least a gigabyte of free space. Delete old apps, photos you've already backed up elsewhere, or large video files.
- iPhone: go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage and check the same thing. iPhone storage issues affect the local WhatsApp database that then gets uploaded.
It's also worth opening the Google Drive app itself, tapping your profile photo, and checking how much space is free in your general Google account, since a completely full Drive account can still cause knock-on issues with sync.
Step 3: turn off Wi-Fi only, or connect to Wi-Fi
WhatsApp defaults to backing up over Wi-Fi only, to save your mobile data. If you're out and about and expecting a backup to run, it simply won't, and there's no error message telling you why.
- Android: Settings, Chats, Chat backup, then check the "Back up over Wi-Fi only" toggle. Turn it off temporarily if you want a backup to run over mobile data, or connect to Wi-Fi and try again.
- iPhone: Settings, Chats, Chat Backup, and look for the same Wi-Fi setting under Google Drive Settings within that screen.
Step 4: check battery optimisation isn't blocking WhatsApp
This one catches Android users constantly. If your phone is set to aggressively save battery, it can stop WhatsApp running in the background long enough to complete a backup, especially overnight when backups usually happen.
- Go to your phone's Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Battery (the wording varies slightly by phone brand).
- Choose "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise" rather than "Optimised" or "Restricted".
- On Samsung phones specifically, also check Settings, Battery and device care, Background usage limits, and make sure WhatsApp isn't in the sleeping or deep sleeping apps list.
iPhone doesn't have this exact setting, since Apple manages background activity differently, but it's worth checking Settings, WhatsApp, and making sure Background App Refresh is switched on.
Step 5: force a manual backup and watch what happens
Once you've checked the above, don't wait for the automatic overnight backup. Force one manually so you can in fact see whether it completes or where it stalls.
- Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup.
- Tap Back Up Now (Android) or Back Up Now (iPhone).
- Keep the app open and your screen on for a few minutes while it runs. If it stalls at the same percentage every time, that usually points back to storage or the account mismatch from Step 1.
Step 6: delete the old backup and start again
If nothing else has worked, the existing backup file itself might be the problem. A backup that got interrupted partway through can sit there corrupted, blocking new attempts.
- Open the Google Drive app, tap the menu, then Backups, and find WhatsApp in the list.
- Delete the existing WhatsApp backup.
- Go back into WhatsApp, Settings, Chats, Chat backup, and run Back Up Now again to create a fresh one.
Yes, this means you lose your old backup, so only do it once you've ruled out the simpler fixes above. It truly is the last resort, not the first thing to try.
A quick note on timing
WhatsApp only backs up automatically on the schedule you've set, daily, weekly or monthly, and only when your phone is idle, charging, and connected to the right network. If you're testing this and nothing seems to happen, don't assume it's broken. Force the manual backup from Step 5 rather than waiting for the automatic one, so you get an answer straight away instead of guessing.
When to just accept the local backup instead
If you've tried everything above and it still won't cooperate, remember that WhatsApp also keeps a local backup on your phone itself every day, stored in the phone's own memory rather than Google Drive. It won't survive a phone reset or a lost phone, so it's not a proper substitute, but it does mean you're not completely without a safety net while you sort out the cloud backup. I'd still push to get Google Drive working fully, since it's the only backup that survives you losing or replacing the phone entirely.
How to tell a backup has truly finished, not just started
A lot of people check the wrong screen and assume a backup has worked when it hasn't. The percentage bar in WhatsApp only shows while the app is open, so if you switch away too soon you can't tell whether it carried on in the background or stopped dead.
- After running a manual backup, leave WhatsApp open and on screen until the percentage disappears and the Chat backup screen shows a fresh date and time next to "Last backup".
- Open the Google Drive app separately, tap the menu, then Backups, and confirm WhatsApp shows a recent date and a file size that roughly matches how much media you have in your chats.
- If the date in WhatsApp and the date in Google Drive don't match, trust the Google Drive one, since that's the record of what in fact landed in the cloud.
Common mistakes that make this worse
A few habits make this problem harder to diagnose than it needs to be. Switching Google accounts on the phone without checking WhatsApp's own backup settings afterwards is the biggest one, since the two don't always sync automatically. Turning off background data for WhatsApp to save battery, then wondering why the backup never runs overnight, is another common one. And restarting a manual backup over and over without checking storage or the account first just wastes time and mobile data without fixing the underlying cause.

If you support a parent or an older relative with this kind of thing, it's worth sitting with them through Step 1 and Step 2 above at least once, since those two checks solve the large majority of cases on their own, and once set up correctly it shouldn't need touching again for months.

Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp backup count against my Google Drive storage?
No. WhatsApp backups to Google Drive don't count towards your normal 15GB Google account storage limit. If your backup is failing, it isn't because your Drive is full of photos and documents, though your general Google account can still hit other limits in rare cases.
Why did my backup work last week and suddenly stop?
The most likely cause is a change you didn't notice, a Google account sign out, a phone software update that reset battery settings, or a new restriction on background apps. Run through the steps above in order and it usually turns up quickly.
Can I back up WhatsApp on iPhone to Google Drive instead of iCloud?
Yes, though it isn't the default. Go into WhatsApp Settings, Chats, Chat Backup, and you'll find a Google Drive option that lets you sign in and back up there instead of, or alongside, iCloud.
Will restoring from a stuck backup lose my messages?
If a backup never completed, restoring from it will only bring back whatever was saved up to the last successful point, not everything since. This is exactly why it's worth fixing the backup issue fully rather than assuming an old, incomplete backup will cover you.
Is there a way to check exactly when my last successful backup happened?
Yes. Go to WhatsApp Settings, Chats, Chat backup, and the date and size of your last successful backup is shown right at the top of that screen, along with the Google account it went to. Check this after every fix above to confirm it's in fact working, rather than assuming.
