Why Does Instagram Say Couldn't Refresh Feed

If you are skim reading
The short version: "couldn't refresh feed" almost always means Instagram's servers couldn't be reached correctly from your phone at that moment.

The short version: "couldn't refresh feed" almost always means Instagram's servers couldn't be reached correctly from your phone at that moment. The three usual causes are a weak or dropped connection, an outdated app version, or Instagram temporarily rate limiting your account after a burst of activity. Check your connection first, then check for an app update.

What's really happening

Every time you pull down to refresh, or open the app fresh, Instagram makes a request to its servers to fetch the newest posts, stories and updates for your feed. The "couldn't refresh feed" message means that request failed or timed out somewhere along the way. It's a generic error message covering several different underlying causes, which is why the fix isn't always the same twice.

The good news is that this message on its own doesn't mean anything is wrong with your account or that you've lost any data. It's a connection and server communication issue, not a content issue. Your posts, followers and messages are unaffected regardless of how many times you see it.

The four most common causes

1. A weak, dropped or restricted connection

This is the single most common cause by far. Instagram needs a steady connection to pull fresh content, and even a brief drop, a switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data mid-load, or a restricted public Wi-Fi network can be enough to trigger this error, even if the rest of your phone seems to be online fine.

2. Too many actions in a short space of time

Instagram applies rate limits to protect its servers and to catch bot-like behaviour. If you've been refreshing repeatedly, liking or following a lot of accounts quickly, or using a third-party app that automates Instagram actions, the app can temporarily throttle your requests, and the feed refresh is often the first thing to show it.

3. An outdated app version

Instagram changes how it talks to its servers fairly often, and older app versions can fall out of step with those changes, causing refresh requests to fail even on a perfectly good connection. This is one of the quieter causes because the rest of the app can still seem to work normally.

4. A server-side outage

Occasionally the fault isn't on your end at all. Instagram has outages and partial disruptions from time to time, affecting specific features like the feed refresh while leaving direct messages or stories working fine. This is the only cause on this list that you can't fix yourself, only wait out.

Fixes to try, in order

  1. Check your connection is really working correctly. Open a browser and load any website to confirm you have a real, working connection, not just a Wi-Fi symbol showing on screen. On both iPhone and Android, also try turning Airplane Mode on for ten seconds and then off again, which forces your phone to reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data fresh. If a website loads fine but Instagram still won't refresh, move to the next step rather than assuming your connection is the problem.
  2. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If you're on Wi-Fi, turn it off in Settings and let your phone switch to mobile data, then try refreshing Instagram again, or vice versa. On iPhone this toggle is in Settings, then Wi-Fi. On Android it's in Settings, then Network and Internet, then Wi-Fi. This helps identify whether the fault is with one specific network rather than Instagram itself. If the feed refreshes fine on the other connection type, the original network is the issue, not the app.
  3. Force close and reopen Instagram. On iPhone: swipe up and hold to open the app switcher, find Instagram, and swipe it away, then reopen from the home screen. On Android: go to Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then tap Force Stop, then reopen it. This clears any stuck request the app is stubbornly retrying. If the feed still won't refresh straight after reopening, check for an app update before trying anything more involved.
  4. Update Instagram to the latest version. On iPhone: open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and update Instagram if available. On Android: open the Play Store, search Instagram, and update if needed. This fixes a surprising number of refresh errors on its own, particularly if you haven't updated in a few weeks. If you're already fully up to date, the cause is more likely a rate limit or an outage than your app version.
  5. Pause for twenty to thirty minutes if you've been very active. If you've recently liked, followed, or commented on a lot of posts quickly, or refreshed the feed repeatedly in frustration, stop entirely for half an hour rather than continuing to try. Rate limits on Instagram tend to lift on their own after a short cooling off period, and continuing to hammer the refresh button can extend how long the limit lasts rather than fixing it.
  6. Check whether it's a wider outage. Search for Instagram down or Instagram outage on a browser to see if other people are reporting the same issue at the same time. If reports are widespread, there's truly nothing to fix on your end, and the feed will come back once Instagram resolves it on their side, usually within a few hours.

What to do if only the main feed is affected

If stories, reels and direct messages all work fine but the main feed specifically won't refresh, that narrows things down to either a rate limit on feed requests specifically, or a small server-side fault affecting that one feature rather than the whole app. Try the app update and force close steps above first, and if those don't help, it's most likely a temporary Instagram-side issue with that particular feature, which tends to resolve within a day without you needing to do anything further.

When to stop troubleshooting and just wait

If you've checked your connection on a website, confirmed the app is fully updated, force closed and reopened it, and it's still failing after all of that, you've ruled out everything on your end. At that point it's either a rate limit that needs time to lift or a server issue Instagram needs to fix, and repeating the same steps over and over won't speed it up. Leave it for an hour and try again rather than continuing to force close and reopen the app repeatedly.

iPhone and Android at a glance

Step iPhone Android
Force close the app Swipe up and hold, then swipe Instagram away Settings, Apps, Instagram, Force Stop
Switch network type Settings, Wi-Fi Settings, Network and Internet, Wi-Fi
Check for an update App Store, profile icon Play Store, search Instagram

Why this error can appear even when the rest of your phone is fine

It's easy to assume that if your other apps are loading normally, your connection can't be the problem, but Instagram's feed refresh is a heavier request than most everyday browsing. Loading a news website or sending a text message uses a small amount of data delivered in one go. Refreshing a feed means pulling in a batch of posts, checking for new stories, and updating several parts of the app at once, all within a short timeout window. A connection that's fine for light browsing can still be too inconsistent for that heavier, more time sensitive request, which is why this error can turn up on a network that otherwise feels completely normal.

This is also why moving to a different room in your house, standing closer to your router, or simply waiting a minute for a busy network to settle down can fix it without you needing to touch a single setting. If you notice this error mostly happens at a particular time of day, for example early evening when more people in your household are online, that pattern points fairly clearly to your own network being the bottleneck rather than anything on Instagram's side.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean my account has been restricted?

Not on its own. A refresh error is a connection and server communication message, separate from account restrictions, which usually show a specific notice rather than this generic message.

Why does it only happen on Wi-Fi and not mobile data?

Some Wi-Fi networks, particularly public or shared ones, restrict the kind of ongoing connection Instagram needs to keep pulling fresh content, even though basic browsing works fine on the same network.

I've reinstalled the app and it's still happening. What now?

If a full reinstall on a confirmed good connection doesn't fix it, the cause is very likely server-side rather than anything on your device, so check for a wider Instagram outage before doing anything further.

Can using a VPN cause this error?

Yes, some VPNs route traffic in a way Instagram's servers flag as suspicious, which can trigger both refresh errors and stricter rate limiting. Try turning the VPN off and refreshing again.

Does clearing the app cache help with this specific error?

It can, particularly if the app has been holding onto a stuck request. On Android use Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Storage, then Clear Cache, and on iPhone offload and reinstall the app instead, since there's no separate cache option.
